A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
My youngest son, age 30, started asking me questions over the weekend about the digital world that our students, your children, live in. After a few responses I asked him where these questions were coming from, and he said he had just read an online blog about what challenges today’s parents face raising children surrounded by technology.
He sent me the link and after reading it, I thought I would share it with our parent community. I don’t know anything about the author, an Occupational Therapist, but I thought she identified and raised many valid concerns as well as some helpful tips. As we move into summer vacation, I thought I’d share an excerpt from the article on how to simplify our tech use and help our kids grow into happy and healthy individuals.
- Set limits and remember that you are your child’s PARENT, not a friend
- Provide nutritious food and limit snacks
- Spend one hour a day in green space: biking, hiking, fishing, watching birds/insects
- Have a daily technology-free family dinner
- Play one board game a day
- Involve your child in one chore a day (folding laundry, tidying up toys, hanging clothes, unpacking groceries, setting the table, etc.)
- Implement consistent sleep routine to ensure that your child gets lots of sleep in a technology-free bedroom
- Teach responsibility and independence
- Teach delayed gratification and provide opportunities for “boredom” as boredom is the time when creativity awakens
- Be emotionally available to connect with kids and teach them self-regulation and social skills
Definitely food for thought. If you wish to read the entire article, click here.

Mad Thinkers take on the Global Finals!
From Left to Right: Milo, Celine, Jacob, Catherine and Drew
Congrats to The Mad Thinkers who completed their final step in the Destination Imagination journey at the Global Finals in Tennessee last week.
They achieved their goals for a first time team at Globals and competed vigorously against teams from throughout the world. We are so proud of them!
Highlights were being chosen to walk the state of Oregon into the Parade of Nations, pin trading, making new friends with buddy teams from Guatemala and Turkey, and being part of an event along with 17,000 people who share an interest in science, technology and engineering paired with the creative, expressive and silly side of the arts.
The Mad Thinkers and their families are incredibly grateful to the Madeleine community for your support of their journey. They represented Oregon and The Madeleine School with enormous pride!

Join the Bridge Program!
Help Welcome New Families
to The Madeleine School
The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.
Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:
- New Parents Potluck in September (approx. two hours)
- Open House in February (approx. two hours)
- School Tours in February (approx. two hours)
If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

- No mustard or mayo!
- Lunches should also include chips and a cookie or piece of fruit.
