February 2, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing this column on Thursday morning just in case we have another snow/ice day tomorrow. Please remember that Portland Public students do not have school tomorrow due to a teacher workday. This is the first time in my 23 years as a principal that we have to call it on our own without PPS resources (i.e. maintenance crews on the road, ODOT, police, etc.) Luckily we have Father Mike, who with guidance from the Holy Spirit, will check out the campus early in the morning to see if we can safely have school. We will get the decision out via the email, website, and flash alert as soon as we can.

Open House

Open House activities are next Monday and Tuesday—Parent information night on Monday at 7:00 and school tours on Tuesday from 10 to 1. Many thanks to the parents who are volunteering to help “tell the Madeleine story” to our prospective families. We really couldn’t do it without you. If you know of anyone who might be interested in enrolling, please encourage them to come on Monday night or give me a call.

Financial Aid Applications

Finally, our School Advisory Council is working on the budget for next year, and we hope to announce any tuition increases around Spring Break. Financial aid applications for next year are available online, and the deadline for Archdiocesan tuition grants is March 31. Click here to access the online application. If you anticipate a need, it is a good idea to get in the pool of applicants while awards are being made which is early April. Questions? Please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

                                                              Sincerely,

                                                              Susan

glassGlass Bowls are a Hit

Last week our sixth graders finished the first of their bowls inspired by the Seattle glass artist, Dale Chihuly.

Loving how they turned out, that evening I snapped this photo and posted it to my Art Teacher Facebook group. By the following day there were nearly 600 reactions to and comments on my post from art teachers across the US and from far corners of the globe.

A school in Maumelle, Arkansas has even asked if they could send their Flat Chihuly ("like Flat Stanley but with artistic flair ") to have his picture taken with the Madeleine-made bowls! I look forward to hosting their Flat Chihuly and am certain his visit will add an extra measure of fun to the unit of study for students at both schools.

I hope you will take the opportunity to stop by the STEAM wing and check out these beautiful Chihuly-inspired pieces, and all the other Madeleine student art currently on display.

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

The 2nd grade did a tremendous job of almost every single family contributing this week, and we delivered 278 sack lunches!

Recently, the Oregon Food Bank reported that the rate of food insecurity (being without access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food) in Oregon is 16.1%. Meaning, about 644,000 Oregonians are food insecure, and of those 223,480 are children. Thank you for your continual commitment to the St. Stephen’s Lunch Program!

Adult Confirmation

Are you an adult Catholic who has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation? Is the Holy Spirit nudging you to receive this most important Sacrament of Initiation and become full members of the Church?

mardigras

Mardi Gras Volunteers Needed

Our annual Mardi Gras celebration is still a few weeks away, but the planning is well underway. It’s one of the biggest events on campus each year, with people coming not only from the parish and school, but from the whole neighborhood.

To bring this off successfully, we need volunteers! We need help with setup, cleanup, food, the kids’ FunZone in the gym and much more. We’d love your help!

Please contact Janeen Reilly, jreilly@themadeleine.edu, and she’ll find just the right spot for you!
