October 21, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The students have been working with Maria Manzo, our parish music director, on a CD of Christmas music. This CD will feature every grade doing selected songs for the holiday season. On November 9th, Maria has a studio recording professional coming to school (really the church) to donate his time to record their angelic voices. On Sunday, November 13th, Maria will be inviting the entire school and parish community to come together to record the final song, so it will truly be a united parish/school project. Parents, teachers, parishioners, choir members, and the students together for one big rehearsal and recording. Details of the event are coming, but I wanted to give you notice so that you can hopefully participate on this day. I know weekends are busy and precious. So many commitments for two days…..However, I am hoping that your family can join the rest of the Madeleine community in this wonderful event.

Called to Protect Training

Also, just a quick reminder that we will be having a Called to Protect training on Tuesday, October 25 at 8:30 in the morning…..right after drop off. If you need this training to volunteer with students, be sure to put this on your calendar.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Also, also, next week is Parent/Teacher conferences from Wednesday through Friday. Be sure you have signed up to meet with your child’s teacher, but if you have forgotten, click on this link.

Have a great weekend.

                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                   Susan

jandsHonorary Chairs of the 2016 Madeleine Auction: Julie and Steve Slavik

When Julie and Steve Slavik moved to Northeast Portland in 1987 with their four young children, they immediately joined The Madeleine Parish and started getting involved in the community and its ministries.

Julie became a catechist and coordinated sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and RCIA. Steve (known to many as “Coach Steve”) volunteered as a coach for neighborhood t-ball teams, and founded the Annual Northeast Portland St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.

Through teaching, coaching, and community building, the Slaviks have been examples of living life guided by Gospel values. And their strongest commitments have been to the children of our parish and neighborhood.

surveyMake Your Voice Heard in Our Parent Survey

Deadline = October 28

This year we are writing our self-study document in anticipation of the accreditation visit by the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) in the fall of 2017. Ongoing school improvement is the goal of the accreditation process by examining all aspects of the school program and operations.

All school stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the study, and we are initiating the gathering of data by asking all parents to complete an online survey. This survey focuses on how well we are doing in a variety of areas such as Catholic identity, faith formation, curriculum, communications, and facilities. WCEA designed the survey so that in addition to ranking the school on these topics, parents can also add their own thoughts and ideas in an open-ended manner. The survey will be active until October 28th. Please take a few minutes to share your perceptions and thoughts as we continue to strive for excellence.

The survey can be found by clicking here.

singingThe Madeleine Sings Christmas - Community Ensemble Recording

November 13 @ The Madeleine Church

It is with great enthusiasm that we would like announce that your Madeleine child will be able to add “Recording Artist” to their already impressive school resumes.

The Madeleine School and Parish will be creating a first-ever Christmas album this fall, just in time for this Christmas. Under the direction of Madeleine Musical Director, Maria Manzo, classes will perform Christmas songs together as well as a group finale, which will include everyone … parents, faculty, staff as well as any and all from the Parish community. That date has been scheduled for Sunday, November 13 shortly following the 10AM mass. There will be pizza and refreshments - affectionately referred to as "Craft Services" in the entertainment industry. We need your voice! Mark your calendars.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you are one of the Osmonds!) and just another way we can all come to together to celebrate the Christmas season and raise money for The Old Church renovation.

We need a professional photographer to volunteer to take pictures ... please let us know if you are available.

You can contact either Kris Thompson at kristine.thompson@gmail.com or Jen Johnson at jenjohnson2215@gmail.com with any questions.

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Mrs. Myers 3 grade class were amazing this week. They sent in 268 lunches! Many were decorated and included special notes. A special thank you to the Armstrong family who brought in 40 lunches fully decorated for fall.

One parent recently related that she has the lunch bags always out in her children’s craft room. Periodically the children decorate the bags and she sets them aside, so then they are all ready for the week her children participate in our community program. Way to plan ahead!
