March 24, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Spring Break! It seems it has been a long time coming…..in spite of our days off for snow and ice. I hope you have some great plans to relax and refresh, whether traveling or having a “staycation.” I am going to sleep in, try a few new restaurants, and shop. A wonderful treat for me.

Speaking of breaks and vacations….I have a few dates for the coming year that you might want to put on your family calendar. School will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 5th. We will have school during Thanksgiving week with early dismissal on Wednesday, Nov. 22nd. (We had the week off this year only because we were working on our accreditation self-study. We shouldn’t have to do that again for another 6 years!). Christmas vacation begins Dec. 18th, and we return to school on Jan. 2nd. Spring Break is

March 26-30. The 8th grade graduation will be June 12th. And the last day of school is June 15th. There will be more regarding in-service days, etc. as the remainder of the year unfolds. Be on the lookout, a complete calendar will be available before the end of the year.

                                                            Have a great week off!

                                                            Sincerely,

                                                            Susan

development2017 Annual Fund Campaign Kick-Off

During Spring Break, be sure to take a look at the 2017 Annual Fund Campaign letter you received last week.

Whether you choose to support the Area of Greatest Need, Tuition Assistance or the Endowment, your donation will help the families around you who struggle to pay tuition. So far this school year 34 students have received more than $57,000 in financial aid.

Give what you can and know you have answered another call to help those in need during this Lenten Season. As in the past, if we raise $27,500, the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation will match it with another $27,500.So without further ado, grab your letter and make a difference in the lives of those around you every day!

Madeleine Students, You are Amazing!

During Catholic Schools Week, Madeleine students raised a total of $809.61 in our Pennies for the Poor Drive. These funds went to help fund St. Andre Bessette’s homeless outreach and day center in downtown Portland.

In February, Madeleine students raised $818.17 for Catholic Relief Services to support their support of refugees. This amount includes both the money donated during the collection at our “We are Called to Care for Newcomers and Refugees” themed Mass and the St. Valentine’s Day $2 Free Dress Day.

Together we brought in 282 mugs, 37 pairs of underwear, and 24 bars of soap for the St. Francis Dining Hall for the Mugs for Hugs fundraiser. Because the dining hall was experiencing such a shortage of mugs, they said the timing of this drive was a small miracle. Then they did a little happy dance!

vaccinationImmunization Rates for The Madeleine School

Due to changes in the immunization law, schools are now required to report their immunization rates. They are shared three ways: electronically in Friday Footnotes, posted to the school website on the "Forms" page and a hard copy in the school office. If you have any questions about Madeleine's immunization rates, please contact Angela Rosebrook.

Click here to see Madeleine's immunization rates.

safetyAvoid a Parking Ticket

It has been brought to our attention by one of our neighbors that those of you parking alongside the field on NE 23rd Avenue for pickup and drop off have been parking illegally. Please remember that if you park on the East side of the street, your car must be facing North. This helps keep our neighborhood and school safe.

Madeleine Students off to Nationals

Next weekend, Peyton W. and Helena O. (both 7th graders) are heading to the 2017 National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky! The girls are playing on the Portland Jr. Wheel Blazers Prep Team. The team has had a successful season and it’s the first time the Prep team has been invited to the Nationals. Good luck, girls!

New Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels, and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)
Even more important, though, is a good understanding of the Mass and of music.

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu or Maria Manzo, mmanzo@themadeleine.edu, at the Parish Office.

82nd Annual Seminary Tea

May 3rd @ 3:00pm

Please join The Seminary Tea Committee at the 82nd Annual Archbishop’s Seminary Tea being held at the Portland Golf Club. This annual spring event is a lovely opportunity to meet Archbishop Sample and the many Seminarians who are supported by this event.

The tea is a tradition in the Catholic community to gather in a beautiful setting to enjoy conversation, delightful refreshments, and, of course, tea. ALL ARE WELCOME. Bring your spouse, your kids, your extended family and friends.

Admission is $35. You can pay when you arrive or contact Mary Kay Beaudoin for advance registration at 503.297.2994 or mkbeaudoin@comcast.net.

We look forward to seeing you May 3rd.

Seder Meal Wed., April 12

Whether or not you have experienced a Seder Meal, it is always a treat, especially when we have a Jewish cantor who helps with the understanding of the Seder and can lead us in a few of the songs. Families are invited to sign up, but because of the length of the meal, children under 6 would find it difficult. There is no cost, but you will be asked to bring a food item (salad, dessert, or red wine - no pork!) when you sign up. Sign up after the Masses this weekend or next weekend.

Watch for a Change to your electronic donations

New payment processor saves us money, but your statement will look different

Over the next few weeks, The Madeleine Parish will be changing to a new payment processor. Making this change enables us to enjoy a significantly lower cost for all of our credit, debit and ACH processing.
While we are trying to make it as transparent as possible to you, you may notice a change on your bank statement or credit card statement. In rare cases, you may get a call from your bank or card issuer, or even our bookkeeper, Nadia Stickney.

Once the change is made, you will notice your generous payment will be listed as “St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church” instead of “church of st mar des:ach” as it formerly appeared.
If you have any questions, please contact James Wurzer, Business Manager at The Madeleine. 503.281.5777 or jwurzer@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
