May 26, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Memorial Day weekend always marks the beginning of the summer season for me. (However I do remember going to Sun River for the weekend a few years ago and waking up to snow.) The end of the school year is in sight, graduation is just around the corner, final projects are due and things are just winding down.

As we begin to close the year, a few reminders…..

  1. Mrs. Rosebrook is still waiting for paperwork from some of our families. Please send in your summer packets as soon as you can. Many thanks and a $5 gift card to the Hendrickson, Wilson, McDonald, Naugler, Diani, Mills, Lowney, Walker, Ukishima, Brune, O’Leary, Mayhew, Glavan, Ashley, Gaber, Chambers, Allen, Curley, Wight, and Robertson families for being one of the first 20 returns.
  2. Bills for unworked volunteer hours will go out next week. There are quite a few families who have not logged any hours yet, so they will be getting a bill for $600. Yikes! Please record your hours so that I do not have to create a bill for you, and you don’t have to write that check.
  3. Next week Anne Palmer will be sending out bills to the families who did not participate in our scrip program this year. Please contact Anne if you are unsure of your status.

On another note….we had a lovely new student visitation day on Thursday. Such an eager group of new kinders and elementary students. Many thanks to Cathy Bargovan, Amy Ratigan, and Evelyn Bian for providing the hospitality to our visitors.

Have a wonderful three day weekend! Here comes summer!

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

Heifer Project Starts Tuesday

May 23-26

When we return from Memorial Day Weekend, Student Government will be running our annual drive to support Heifer International. Heifer International is a nonprofit organization working to end world poverty by giving cows, goats and other income producing animals to impoverished families around the world.  Families are educated and trained on how to properly care for their animal and commit to giving its first off-spring to another family in need. Each day that a student participates in the drive he or she will earn a button for the corresponding day.

thanksNews from your School Advisory Council (SAC)

Goodbye to 3 senior members; Hello to 3 new members

Thank you to the members of School Advisory Council who are finishing their terms this year: Heather Matteri, Meg Scharle and Anne Steiner. Their contributions during the last three years were greatly appreciated, and they will be missed.

At the same time we would like to welcome our new members: John LaBarca, Lance Mayhew, Karis Stoudamire-Phillips! They have been chosen to serve three year terms. We had many excellent applicants this year, and thanks to everyone who threw their hat in the ring.

Each year we have three openings, so please consider applying next year if you are interested. SAC is a great way to get involved in the formation of policy for the school and to support the pastor, administration, and staff.

parentsParents Club: Looking Ahead!

Please join in the collaboration as we work to create a more community minded school.

Parents contribute so much to the running of our wonderful school. From hosting fund raising events such as the Jog-a-thon and Auction, to helping Angela organize the uniform closet and keeping up with Lost and Found. Parents provide hospitality for our outreach and community events, appreciations for teachers and staff, host Thursday hot lunch and the Back-to-School BBQ for our children, run the Book Fair, and so much more! New this year, parents are producing the Talent Showcase for our children to share their creative gifts.

There are many opportunities for contribution and community building next year - and great ways to enjoy your volunteer hours!

We are particularly in need of a ringmaster to coordinate the Parents Club Executive Board. Without a ringmaster, aka Parents Club President, it is possible that some traditional Parents Club events may be cancelled for the upcoming school year.

Please contact Deborah Naugler to find out how you can join in the collaboration and keep our Parents Club strong and vibrant..

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

The CYO Track & Field Meet of Champions was held this past weekend and several of Madeleine’s athletes qualified to compete. Reports and photos from parents are still coming in, but so far we know that at least two Madeleine students, Karson W. and Katherine O., made it to the podium.

Karson took 4th place in cub girls (5th & 6th graders) turbo javelin, and  Katherine medaled in the special roadrunner event for 3 & 4 grade girls, taking 1st place in the 100, 2nd place in the shot put and 4th place in the 200.

Congratulations to all the Madeleine athletes for qualifying for this championship meet!

sslSt. Stephen's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Even with the sun out and super busy end of year schedules, the middle school completed their turns making lunches for St. Stephen’s with impressive numbers. Last week Mr. Parker’s 7th Grade class brought in 147 lunches and 33 extra sandwiches. This week Mrs. Chamber’s 6th Grade class brought in 168 lunches with 22 extra sandwiches. Thank you for finding the time to serve others.

bookfairBook Fair Results

Thank you to everyone who shopped at the book fair this spring. With our $3,905 in sales we will receive 60% back from Scholastic that will be used to purchase new reading material for the library and classrooms. Our book fair provides huge support in this area and keeps our students excited about reading books from our library.

Our free dress day for Children's Book Bank raised $372. We were able to purchase 81 brand new books from the book fair that will go to children in Portland. These books will be received by children that have limited resources to have their own books in their homes. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

Kids Kreations!kids

Thank you to everyone who ordered Kids Kreations this year. The cards were either delivered to you this week or will be in your child's backpack today. Please check! Many grandparents ordered cards. Please ensure these get from your child's backpack into their loving hands.

Thank you to Mrs. Galash for her amazing art direction. The children's artwork is lovely and created such beautiful cards.

Special thanks to Greg Maffei for the impeccable lay out work and to Rhino Digital who provided the printing.

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

amazon

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

summerSummer Camps

At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

To get the complete details about each camp, simply click here!
