April 28, 2017
A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This has been a busy week and it seems that the pace is beginning to pick up as we only have 7 weeks of school left. There is still a lot to accomplish to wrap up this school year and get a jump on next year.
Speaking of next year…..Our Accreditation visit has been set for Oct 10th, 11th and 12th. (Originally it began on Oct. 9th, but that changed.) I have spoken to our visiting team chairperson. She is from the Diocese of Orange in California and is one of the authors of the protocol document - we couldn’t have asked for anyone with more accreditation experience! She asked me to send her the first draft of the Self-Study that we have been working on so that she could give us some feedback. I was delighted to hear that in her opinion it was “well written, clear, and concise.” She approved of the critical goals we selected for the next few years and gave us the green light to develop our three action plans based on those goals. We will be working on these on May 5th, our last accreditation workday. I will share our document with the school community when it is finished. Might make the best seller list….or a selection for the Madeleine Book Club.
I was so proud of our students yesterday as we practiced our April fire drill. Each month we are required to hold an emergency drill which also may include earthquake and lock down procedures. In the school building we have emergency warnings such as flashing strobe lights, a very loud alarm, and automatic closing doors. The students do a great job of responding to the drill warnings, knowing how to exit the building, walk at a brisk pace, and meet with their class on the basketball court. After Mass on Thursday, we had a fire drill to see how we would respond if the fire was in the church. We identified the four exits and they pointed to which door was closest to them. General reminders were given and then we started the drill. They were calm, serious, quiet, following directions, and no panic. Very comforting to know that we can quickly get 258 students outside without the help of flashing lights and alarms. Great job!
Sincerely,
Susan

St. Stephen's Lunch Program
Well it looks like we are into the final weeks for the 2016-17 school year. Each class has just one more time to make lunches for our friends at St. Stephen’s. The 1st grade were an amazing competitor this week with a whopping 411 lunches! That’s right folks two weeks in a row we have delivered over 400 lunches! A big thanks to Mrs. Dillon’s students, who displayed such enthusiasm and not to mention generosity in sharing their Easter candy.
E-Waste Recycling Event was a Success!
The Care for Creation Committee’s annual E-Waste Recycling event weathered grey and occasionally drippy skies last weekend to take in and responsibly dispose of tons of electronics and hard-to-dispose of items. According to the Committee, they processed more than 1,000 cubic feet of styrofoam, 125 fluorescent tubes, 450 pounds of household batteries, several wheelbarrows full of compact CFL bulbs, and 10 huge pallets of electronic waste. Even though the weather was tough, and the dropoff session was shorter, the volunteers were enthusiastic and those who brought e-waste in were thankful for having a way to properly rid their homes of items that could otherwise cause environmental harm.
Thank you to the Care for Creation Committee, and everyone who helped. If you’d like to become a member of the Care for Creation team, please email: shauna.a.mohr@gmail.com for more information.

2017 Annual Fund Campaign Questions Answered...
Question: Who gives to the Annual Fund?
Answer: Our Annual Fund Campaign requires the generosity and support of our entire Madeleine community: alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, parishioners and parents. With everyone working together, we will have a thriving, well-funded, Catholic school for the next 100 years.
Action: It's not too late to contribute to the 2017 Annual Fund Campaign. Give what you can because if we raise $27,500, the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation will match it with another $27,500.

New Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!
We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.
Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound
levels, and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens
are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have
been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)
Even more important, though, is a good understanding of the Mass and of music.
Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu or Maria Manzo, mmanzo@themadeleine.edu, at the Parish Office.
82nd Annual Seminary Tea

Proceeds from the tea support the education of seminarians who are preparing to serve in our archdiocese. Any additional contribution you wish to make is appreciated and tax exempt.

Thank you Deacon Bill
Farewell celebrations this Saturday and Sunday after Masses
In September, we welcomed Deacon Bill Zondler as our weekend Transitional Deacon for the academic year. This weekend, sadly, it’s time to say goodbye. Deacon Bill has been a wonderful addition to our parish, with his gentle yet inspirational personality, his thoughtful homilies and engaging delivery. He has been a tireless worker in his time here, and has done an amazing job building himself into the legacy of The Madeleine.
Please join us for celebrations in his honor this weekend:
- Saturday Evening: Right after 5:00 pm Mass join us for a wine and cheese
celebration.
- Sunday Morning: After 10:00 am Mass, join us for a cake reception.

Please help us celebrate the Month of Mary and Mother’s Day in a special
way!
At each Mass, beginning Mother’s Day, May 14, our Gathering Song, a Litany
of the Virgin Mary, will be accompanied by photos of mothers and children
from The Madeleine Community. So, we need your photos!
Photos can be either a photo you and your child (children), or a photo
of you and your mother. Upload your photos to
www.themadeleine.edu/mothers. If you only have a photo print, bring it
to the parish office during work hours (label it with your name and phone).
Questions? Contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu, or Maria Manzo,
mmanzo@themadeleine.edu or call the parish office.

Send us your Class of 2017 graduates!
