A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Fr. Mike and I would like to thank the members of School Advisory Council who are finishing their terms this year: Anne Thompson, Jim Jones, and Lee Fiedler. Their contributions were greatly appreciated, and they will be missed.

At the same time we would like to welcome our new members: Eric Anctil, Lucas Newman, and Tim Resch! They have been chosen to serve three year terms. We had many excellent applicants this year and thanks to everyone who threw their hat in the ring. Each year we have three openings, so please consider applying next year if you are interested. SAC is a great way to get involved in the formation of policy for the school and to support the pastor, administration, and staff.

One week left to go! Hang in there.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Now Taking Brick Orders for our Summer 2015 Installation

Celebrate and remember your loved ones with a personalized brick on The Madeleine School's Field of Dreams Walkway. The walkway is located on Klickitat along the basketball court.

An inscribed brick makes a perfect graduation, anniversary, or birthday gift. Your $75 donation will support The Madeleine School's 2015 Annual Fund Campaign. Gift Certificates available.

Please click here to view and print your order form. Engravings will be done in August when the weather is warm and dry. Thank you for your support!

Playground Update

We are happy to report that an agreement has been reached with the contractor regarding the playground surface.

The contractor has committed to ripping up and replacing the playground surface in the large, main area of the playground this summer. The smaller area, on the corner of 23rd and Klickitat, will be repaired this summer rather than replaced.

If you are in the neighborhood and see caution tape around the playground, please respect it in order to allow for the proper installation of our new playground surface.

Also, many thanks to Paul Ketcham and the rest of the Madeleine Safety & Security Committee for working so diligently with the City to obtain and install new crosswalk signs between the school and the Field of Dreams as a warning to bicyclists that people are crossing the bikeway. Be sure to check them out!

Eighth Grade Special Art Exhibit in the Garden Room

As we get ready to say goodbye to our eighth graders, please stop by the garden room and see their final projects of their Madeleine Art experience.

Students proposed their own project ideas, selected their medium, and created their pieces to show the depth and breadth of what they have learned and what inspires them.  From plaster life masks to pastel drawings, painted figures to photography, this special exhibit will be on display starting Wednesday afternoon.  Don't miss it!

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

AMAZONIf you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, you’ve probably been browsing Amazon. Starting today, a new Madeleine Parents Club program will donate a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

It’s time for the Summer Reading challenge!

The Summer Reading program is well under way.  The younger grades have user names and passwords coming home in Friday Folders.  All students can record their minutes from May 4- September 4th.  It's a fun way to stay motivated to read over the summer and avoid the "summer slide."

The past two years The Madeleine has been second in the state for reading minutes.  Lets see what we can do this summer!

youthYouth Group Continues During the Summer!

Sunday, June 7th @ 7pm

Come join us for food, fellowship and fun in the "teen room" from 7-8:15pm.

Youth Group will continue to meet during the summer!  Be sure to check out the "youth ministry" link from The Madeleine home page for the most up to date events and times. Mark your calendars for upcoming summer youth night dates:  June 21, July 12, July 26, August 2, August 16th, and Saturday, August 22nd - all day concert in Salem.

Madeleine parents!  Another great way to earn Volunteer Community hours is to work with The Madeleine parish's Middle School or High School Youth Ministry program.  It's fun and rewarding for both kids and volunteers!  Help keep this active youth ministry program alive for our kids!  Contact Juliana Weis at jsweis@themadeleine.edu if you are interested.

Join the Bridge Program!

Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.  In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

Sign up Now for YDP Summer Camp

YDP summer camp at Madeleine will be offered from June 15 - August 21 from 8am - 6pm each weekday. Only 30 spots available per day, so don't delay!

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The third grade stepped up to the challenge and brought in 245 well prepared lunches this week.  I am so impressed that these last few grades have had such high numbers; it’s not easy to do with so many last minute, end-of-year details to attend to. This is our last St. Michael’s delivery of the year and we are thrilled to wrap up with enthusiasm.  Louise Hallman and I have had a wonderful experience volunteering for St. Michael’s Lunches and we are thrilled and grateful to have Tiffany and Reed Cooper carry on next year.  Happy Summer!

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

The attached article was published in the June 2013 edition of Edutopia, but its focus on summer learning loss and the ways you can avoid it are clear and sound.  I am including it here in its entirety.  If you would like specific ways to help your child this summer, do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher.  Thanks for another great year.  Carolyn

Madeleine Art has officially entered a new era!

Go to your computer and search “Artsonia Kids Art Museum.” Then, on this user-friendly site, search by school for “The Madeleine” in Portland. Soon you will be seeing your son or daughter's art work, his or her grade's projects, or the entire school's gallery.

K-7 students have at least one piece published. Each student is listed by first name and a number for security. The art will always be there for you to enjoy. You can even start a Fan Club for your kid where family and friends can leave comments that you approve and be notified when a new piece of art is published.

But wait, there's more! You can transform your child's art into treasures. Click on the “Gift Shop” tab to see what dozens of items will look like with their artwork on them. From phone cases to cutting boards, T shirts to journals, there are many things to choose from. Father's Day is just around the corner. Wouldn't Dad or Grandpa love something extra special? As a wonderful bonus, our school receives 20% from everything you order. (As a courtesy to Kids Kreations, please resist purchasing note cards through Artsonia)

Eighth grade parents, just for you, if you would like to create a special keepsake for your son or daughter, bring me a piece of art they made during any of their years at The Madeleine and I will photograph and upload it to the Artsonia site. My official work days are Tues, Wed., and Thursday. Parents of younger kids, start planning that memory quilt or set of coffee cups for their future dorm room today!

We are just getting started with our Artsonia Gallery. Photographing and uploading student work takes time that my half-time teaching position doesn't allow. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new adventure, please let me know. Training takes less than five minutes and much of the work could be done from home.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

June 7 ~ Body and Blood of Christ ~ Mark 14:12-16,22-26

On this celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ, the gospel reading from Mark tells us about the Last Supper—that is, the final meal that Jesus ate with his followers. In it we hear that Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it and shared it with his disciples, saying, “Take it, this is my body …” He then took a cup of wine, gave thanks for it, and shared it with his followers, as well. This special meal that he shared with his disciples, is the basis of the Eucharist, the consecrated bread and wine that we share during Mass.

Do you have special meals with your family? What are you celebrating and what do you eat at these special meals? Are there certain foods that have become symbols of the special meal and reminds you of what you are celebrating? Name some of these special foods. Jesus celebrated a special meal with his disciples before he died. What are symbols of that meal? Do we share in those symbols? Where? What do they mean to you? What does the word, “consecrated,” mean?

Polly.Dugan What's Cool About Our School!

Madeleine parent Polly Dugan’s debut novel “The Sweetheart Deal,” is in bookstores now. Her first book, “So Much a Part of You,” a linked short story collection, was published last June and will be available in paperback on August 11th.

She will be reading and signing books at Powell’s on Thursday, June 11th at 7:30pm. She is also available to meet with book clubs in the area. If your book club is interested, visit her website at www.pollydugan.com and follow the book club link to get in touch!

Summer Camps

At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

Send us your 2015 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of Class of 2015 high school graduates from The Madeleine in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduate’s name by June 9 so we may list them in our June 14 bulletin.
