March 6, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Summer vacation may be months away, but I know that our parent community is a group of planners. There has been some interest shown in extending our summer YDP program for a few more weeks until August 21st. Ms. Savery is open to the suggestion, but she needs to know FOR SURE that there is enough interest to support the program. The proposed dates are to start on June 15th and operate until August 21st. We would be closed July 2nd and 3rd for the Fourth of July holiday and July 30th and 31st for the annual Haitian Garage Sale. Otherwise it would be business as usual, 5 days a week, from 8:00 until 6:00.

If you think you would be interested in enrolling your child/children, please give it some attention and take a look at your calendar. Details on weekly themes and activities will be forthcoming, but we know Gaila does a great job providing fun, educational experiences here at The Madeleine. Talk to her for more details and let her know what weeks might be of interest for your family. A final decision to offer the program will depend on participation.

Hopefully, you were able to come to Science Night last night and view the incredible projects our middle school students proudly displayed. Each year the caliber of experiments and research essays improves. This is the best I have seen to date. I heard from several parents during the evening that this is their favorite event and was a deciding factor when choosing to attend Madeleine. What high praise for our talented science teacher, Ms. Yuhas, and our students! Please join me in thanking Ms. Yuhas for her leadership and guidance. Also, thank you to the students for setting up the fun science stations and quickly cleaning the Parish Hall!

                                                     Have a great weekend.
                                                     Susan

March 15 @ 7pm, Teen room upstairs.

For BOTH middle and high school students interested in a unique service opportunity, please come to a special youth ministry night on Sunday, March 15 from 7-8:15pm in the new teen room (formerly the old church upstairs).

Come hear our guest speaker, Rhona Mahl, Founder of Braking Cycles and Director of Outreach for a faith based ministry called Transitional Youth share about how her organization is helping the marginalized youth here in Portland. You can find out more about Rhona and Braking Cycles at BrakingCycles.org and TransitionalYouth.org.

Heifer Project 2015!

On Monday, March 16, The Madeleine School will start their support for Heifer International through student donations.

Heifer is an organization that helps children and their struggling families in poverty all over the world. With your donations, we will be able to provide an animal that will help a family in poverty escape hunger with the animal’s resources. Heifer does not just help one family, it helps the community. If you click here you can visit their website and learn more about their mission.

As you may remember, each day of the week is assigned a specific theme, and if you bring in money according to the day, you will receive a themed button. Student Government will be collecting your money at tables in the school hallways. After Spring Break, we will be selling the extra buttons for any amount of money.

Thank you!

Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate strengths in how children and adults process and understand information.

I will be highlighting each of the multiple intelligences in the next few Friday Footnotes.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence

Visual-spatial intelligence allows a student to visualize an object and create mental pictures and images.  These students can visualize what a room would look like with a different arrangement.  They are good at judging distances and have a sense of “what fits where.”  A student with visual-spatial intelligence quickly develops a sense of direction and easily interprets pictorial representations.

Students with a strong visual-spatial intelligence choose careers that require mental imagery.  This intelligence is important to engineers, architects, designers, photographers, artists and pilots.

Strategies that foster this intelligence:

Creating maps

Using graphic organizers

Designing and building

Illustrating

Interpreting graphs

Completing mazes

Playing chess

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The sixth grade brought in 127 well packed lunches this week. Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to make sure our friends at St Michael’s are well fed. A big thank you to the two fifth grade students who helped load our lunches this week. The eighth graders were on a field trip and we greatly appreciated the extra hands.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

March 8 ~ Third Sunday of Lent ~ John 2:13-25

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

When Jesus went to the temple in Jerusalem, he saw that the Jewish people were misusing the temple by selling things in it, as though it was a marketplace. This made Jesus so angry that he knocked the tables over and drove the people out. The Jewish people asked why he had done this, that is “what sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus replied, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews thought he was talking about the temple, but Jesus was actually talking about himself and his upcoming death and resurrection.

Why do you suppose Jesus was so angry? Do we always act like we should when we are in church?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Calling all instrumentalists!

Madeleine Chimes Ensemble

The Madeleine Music Ministry is looking for musicians to be part of our new CHIMES ensemble. If you have good rhythm and a basic knowledge of sight-reading, then playing hand chimes is for you. This is a FUN way to share your musical talent with the Madeleine community! Consider making this a family affair – all children (12 and older) and adults are welcome.

Jazz/Praise Band

The Madeleine Music Ministry is looking for instrumentalists to be part of our Music Ministry team. If you play bass, drums, or guitar (at the intermediate advanced level), this ministry is for you! Music includes an eclectic mix of styles – primarily jazz, gospel, and contemporary.
For more information, please contact Maria Manzo, Music Director at the Parish Office, 503-281-5777.

Habitat for Humanity: warmer days make the work wonderful!

Help needed April 1, April 11, April 15 and April 18

If you’ve been holding off volunteering for Habitat for Humanity because of the cold, wintry weather, take heart. Spring is nearly here and there are new opportunities for you to join with other volunteers from the Madeleine who are busy building a new home for the Sebastian-Pascual family.
The foundation, floors, walls and roof are in place, but there’s still much to do before the house is finished.
Volunteers from the Madeleine are needed for Wednesday April 1, Saturday April 11, Wednesday April 15 and Saturday April 18. If this will be your first time volunteering, relax. You do not need to be a carpenter or painter or have any building experience. There are trained instructors and tools and safety equipment are provided.
To volunteer on any or all of those days, please e-mail the Madeleine’s Volunteer Coordinators, Mark and Susan Miller, hoosiersusan2@gmail.com or call 503-708-7395.
Days are getting longer, the weather warmer, so please consider joining other Madeleine parishioners in this interfaith project for Habitat for Humanity.

Lenten Fasting and Abstinence Regulations

Every year, we get questions about the fasting requirements for Catholics during Lent. And, sometimes, those discussions can get animated with family histories, special exceptions and imaginative definitions of fasting. So, we thought this year, we’d publish what the Archdiocese sent us. Enjoy (or don’t, if it’s a Friday!).

To quote:

All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All Catholics between the ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed.
