A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Sometimes having the job of principal is hard, and I know that most of you experience the same thing in whatever line of work you do. But most of the time it is the best job in the world. I want to share a true story that happened this week to illustrate my point. A first grader came up to me in the hallway and said, “Mrs. Steele, I just wanted you to know that my brother in 4th grade is doing just great. I know you think about all the kids, but you don’t need to worry about him.” I have no idea what prompted him to share this thought with me, but I was so touched by his brotherly concern and that he wanted to tell me about it. It certainly was the highlight of my day.

Thank You Ms. Savery

A big thank you to Ms. Gaila Savery for organizing this year’s first Parent Education Night last Monday. She was instrumental in bringing Mrs. Sklar to The Madeleine after taking one of her workshops. We had a huge turnout of people who wanted to learn about executive functioning. Some parents commented that the information was applicable to themselves as well as their children. Thank you, Gaila, for putting the evening together for us.

Annual Notification

Many years ago all of the Archdiocesan properties (schools, churches, buildings, etc.) were inspected for asbestos. Any asbestos that was found was removed or encapsulated. Twice a year all buildings are inspected to be sure that any encapsulation is intact and there is no danger to the people in the building. In addition we are required to send out a letter each year, with details of the abatement program. Click here to read that letter.

Called To Protect

A final word about our child abuse prevention program, Called To Protect. If you requested a background check from the school office, you should have received an email from Praesidium, the company that processes the checks. If you do not respond to their email within 7 days, the request becomes invalid and we have to start over again. Call the school office if you are in this situation.

              Have a lovely weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Cool About Our School

Annual Fund Campaign Hits Its Goal

Sixth grader, Alex F., donated $20 of his allowance savings to the Annual Fund Campaign.  Now that’s school spirit!

Thanks to the generosity of students like Alex, as well as parents, alumni, faculty & staff, and parishioners, the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign has raised over $25,000 for the Tuition Assistance and Endowment Funds.  These generous contributions will help keep a Madeleine education accessible and affordable for everyone and will be matched with an additional $25,000 by the OCF Joseph Weston Public Foundation.

Stay tuned for final numbers and participation levels!

Seen on campus

Handsome young men wearing ties!

In order to keep up with the trend, Mrs. Steele has worked with Dennis Uniform to make ties available in the uniform plaid for both girls and boys.  You have a choice of traditional, clip-on or a girls-only style and can buy them now in the school office for only $10.  Check them out!

Note that the ties must be worn with a button-down, collared shirt – not polo shirts.  Have your own tie you like wearing?  Go right ahead.

Theater Comes to Madeleine

Thursday, October 9th

Fourth through sixth graders will be treated on Thursday to a performance of "The Pressure Point," which uses a highly interactive game show format to help students learn to make healthy choices and respond to peer pressure in a positive way.  Issues raised in the play include personal goal-setting, bullying, conflict resolution, self-image, healthy choices, media literacy, and leadership.

The Educational Theatre Program is presented by Kaiser Permanente in collaboration with Oregon Children's Theatre, working together to provide in-school performances that explore a wide range of health and wellness issues.

Coaching for Character Conference

October 4th at Jesuit High School

This conference features a great lineup of motivational speakers including Bruce Brown, Alberto Salazar, and Darren Treasure. The workshop runs from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and is only $50, which includes lunch, or $25 for the morning session. This conference will be great for staff, parents, and coaches. The workshop is designed for youth coaches and parents, but is applicable to anyone who motivates young people.

The point of the conference is to address the heart of coaching- not the x's and o's or the technical side but everything in between. We hope to spend a day addressing issues like the tension between winning and formation, between talent and grit, between developing strength that doesn't bully, tensions between coaching girls versus coaching boys, and how what we teach on the field actually matters more off the field.

To register for this conference, go to www.jesuitportland.org/manresa. Full day participants can also purchase .5 semester Master's Degree credits from the University of Portland for an additional $25.00. The conference counts for 8 PDU's.

The Refinery Offers Classes for 5th - 8th graders

Get em’ energized, off the couch, and out of their desks by sending your kids to The Power Play! Kids will work on agility, strength, flexibility and mobility.

habitat for humanityHelp Us Build a Habitat Home!

Soon we will take hammer to nail and begin work on a Habitat for Humanity home for the Sebastian-Pascual family. Ricardo and Micaela immigrated from Guatemala 17 years ago, and have three children. Next Spring they will move into their home in a development called Trillium Court, 6875 S. W. Capitol Hill Road, Portland. The Madeleine will be joining other faith communities in volunteering time and talent to this inter-faith build.

We have the following volunteer opportunities on the construction site for interested parishioners 16 years and older: November 4, November 8, November 22, December 3, and December 13, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm (1/2 days may be possible upon special request). Please contact Susan Miller, Volunteer Coordinator, hoosiersusan2@gmail.com, 503-708-7395, to register for one or more of these dates or to sign our roster and receive updates on this build.

For those interested in serving in a different way, we have the following leadership positions open:

Hospitality Coordinator – Coordinates the donation and serving of a simple lunch and beverages for volunteers on the construction site.

Communications Coordinator – Communicates the progress of the house construction through bulletin submissions, pulpit announcements, and church web site updates.

Photographer – Takes and collects photos chronicling the house build at all phases of construction. Works with Communications Coordinator in creation of a storyboard.

If you are interested in serving in any one of these leadership positions, please contact Co-Chairs Jim Laubenthal (laubenthaljim@gmail.com, 503-287-9144) or Darlene Maurer (darlene.maurer@frontier.com, 503-629-8541).
