A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week I have hijacked Susan's column in order to give you an update on the playground. As many of you have noticed, the new playground surface has deteriorated in multiple places.
After several weeks of coordination, we were able to meet earlier this week with the vendor who installed the playground surface. He reviewed the surface and has agreed to remedy the damaged surface by patching the areas that are deteriorating, and then re-layering the entire surface to reseal it. He stated that he has not seen this occur in the past, and is not sure why it occurred this time. He is going to provide a game plan in writing for fixing the playground, but major repairs must be completed during warmer/dry weather, and requires at least a week without precipitation so that the base material is dry.
Also during our meeting in response to our questions, the vendor identified the materials used for the playground surface as "shredded rubber strands and urethane and acrylic binder."
Knowing how much the students love to use the playground, we will continue to keep you updated as we work with the vendor to develop and implement a repair plan.
Sincerely,
James Wurzer

Cool About Our School
The 1st and 7th graders really have the holiday spirit! They teamed up to fulfill 60 holiday wishes from seniors at Home Instead Senior Care. One especially touching wish came from a senior named Robin who asked for a painting or photo of an orange sunset or sunrise for her bedroom wall. Michael H., a 7th grader, took her request and ran with it. Instead of just buying a print, he took the time to paint her a picture. Well done, Michael!
Upcoming Youth Group Outing for 6th, 7th & 8th Graders!
Sunday, December 21st @ 5:30pm
Do you have the gift of song? Even if you don't, don your hats and mittens and ride your sleigh on over to the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 21st at 5:30pm, for an evening of winter fun!
We want to spread Christmas cheer to the seniors at Laurelhurst Village, a nursing home in SE Portland. We will meet at the Hall, hand out caroling books, and we will then divide into car pools before heading out to the nursing home. Refreshments will be served at the nursing home after the caroling.
Fill out permission slips that are provided outside the school front office or church narthex, and then return them to available manila folder by Friday December 19th. Some permission slips are already on file. Parents just need to provide a signature. If you have any questions, contact Juliana at 503-287-0176 or jweis@themadeleine.edu. Fa la la la la la!

Family Faith Sharing
December 14 ~ Third Sunday of Advent ~ John 1:6-8, 19-28
As part of the Action Plan resulting from the results of the recent Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article will now be included each week in Friday Footnotes.
The third Sunday of Advent is known as the Sunday of Joy, or Gaudete Sunday. (You will notice that the priest will wear pink vestments to symbolize that the waiting is half way over). Today’s reading, from John’s Gospel, again tells us about John the Baptist, who tried to help people prepare for the coming of the Messiah.
John reminds us that Jesus was sent to change our lives. How can we as a family change our lives so that we can be renewed with the presence of the Spirit?
One of the problems that we all have, especially during this holiday season, is that we get so busy that we hardly think about what we are actually celebrating. Brainstorm some things you can do as a family that will help you keep more focused on Jesus this Advent season ... things you can do both by yourself and some you can do with your family.
This week is filled with celebrations -- take time to learn about some of the saints that are celebrated during this week, such as: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Lucy, and Saint John of the Cross.
We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.
St. Michael's Lunches
Making a difference, one lunch at a time
The sixth grade brought in 134 lunches this week. Thank you so much for taking the time to pack nice large meals for our friends at St Michael’s. Please note that next week is our last delivery before Christmas. If any of you are doing any baking, please consider bringing in some Christmas cookies or holiday treats next Tuesday, 12/16. It would go a long way to brighten the spirits of those in need.
Counselor Corner
by Carolyn Ullman
Read the article in the series about children struggling with handwriting. it could be more than just laziness or a lack of motivation. It could be a neurologically-based learning issue called dysgraphia.

Volunteer Now for Madeleine Career Day
Friday, January 23rd @ 8:30am
We would love to hear from you if you have a career experience that you would like to share with our students. We are planning a four-to-five round rotation of multi-age groupings (grades 3-8). Parents will be asked to plan a 15-20 minute, hands-on presentation about their career. We will categorize careers by one of the multiple intelligences groupings (linguistic, mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, naturalist, interpersonal, intrapersonal and musical), although your career does not need to fit neatly into one of these categories, as most don't.
If you would like to volunteer or have questions, please contact Carolyn Ullman or Alison Anderson at cullman@themadeleine.edu or aanderson@themadeleine.edu.
