February 6, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I have lots of things to mention in today’s letter so without further ado….. A huge, major, colossal, gigantic thank you to the many volunteers who helped with our Open House activities on Monday and Tuesday. Lynn Robinson and Caryn Fiedler, our crack development team, put together a group of parents who did an incredible job of telling the Madeleine story to prospective parents.  We received many applications so our enrollment looks quite strong. Again, thank you so much for being excellent ambassadors and giving of your time.

Ash Wednesday will begin our Lenten season and it is approaching quickly on February 18th. But before the season of fasting begins, we have Mardi Gras to celebrate on Feb. 17th. There is no school on February 17th due to an Archdiocesan in-service. However, I hope all our families will attend the 6:00 Mass and then (free) Mardi Gras festivities in the parish hall. Since Fr. Mike wants all families to attend (and so do we) and join in the celebration, he has granted a “late start” on Wednesday morning. School will begin at 10:30 and YDP will open at 9:30. Get your mask and costume ready to add to the gala.

On another note, Dennis Uniform will now be our supplier of school sweatshirts and fleeces. Our rep said that parents can order now and delivery will be in 10 days or so. After that they will have items in stock. She also said there is a sale coming up, and we will pass that information on to you when we get it.

Finally our Parents Club is having their annual Spaghetti Dinner tomorrow night. It is always so delicious and the chairs, Joanna Curley and Tessa Siegel, promise that this year’s will be just as wonderful. Hope to see you tomorrow.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Madeleine’s Box Top Class Competition

During the month of February, the Parents Club is hosting a friendly competition to see which class can bring in the most BoxTops.  The winning class will be treated to a donut party!

All you need to do is drop a Ziploc bag, full of BoxTops, marked with your grade in the white bin near the gym stairs.  At the end of the month, the Parents Club will count and tally to determine the winning class.

Want an easy way to get your volunteer hours from home?  Step up and volunteer to manage the Madeleine BoxTops Program.  The time commitment is about one hour per week, and you can do it from home!  Previous volunteers in this position have said that it is an easy job, but that you have to be detail oriented.

Contact Alyssa Pace, Parents Club President, at alyssapace@yahoo.com and let her know you are willing to count and sort labels.

Pennies for the Poor Results

$750 raised for St. Andre Bessette

Last week Student Government held its annual fundraiser, Pennies for the Poor. As you may remember, each class had a jug, and each class put coins into the jugs to get points for themselves, or take away points from another class.

After the Eighth Grade Algebra class and Mr. Parker counted up the coins, we have our results. Seventh grade won, with 1,105 points. The overall amount raised was $750, which will be going to St. Andre Bessette Chapel downtown. Go 7th grade!

Friday, February 13th

On Friday, February 13th, Student Government is hosting a $2 free dress day! In the spirit of Valentine’s day, students can wear some Valentine’s Day colors, such as pink, red, purple, or white.

All of the proceeds will go to the organization Operation Smile. They are an international children’s medical charity whose mission is to surgically help children who are born with a cleft palate. Thanks for a Job Well Done!

Some volunteer jobs are flashy and fun.  Others just need to get done.  Many thanks to Kysa Kelleher, Heather Matteri, Alyssa Pace, and Kristin Rios, who spent half a day cleaning out the parent workroom.

Thanks to their hard work, it will be much easier for parents working on all the Parents Club events (think Auction, Jogathon, etc.) to find the supplies they need.

Many thanks also go out to the 26 (!) parents who volunteered to greet prospective families and give tours at Open House this week.  We received many applications across almost all grades, so our enrollment looks quite strong for the coming year. Again, thank you so much for being excellent ambassadors and giving of your time.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate strengths in how children and adults process and understand information.

I will be highlighting each of the multiple intelligences in the next few Friday Footnotes.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The kindergarten class brought in 310 beautifully decorated and nutritious lunches this week.  The ham and split pea soup simmering on the kitchen stove provided the perfect cozy atmosphere for our friends dining at St. Michaels.  Soup and sack lunches on a rainy Tuesday morning are the best way to start the day.  Thanks for all your hard work kindergarten families, you're making a big difference.

Updated notice from the IRS

NOTE: The past weeks, we have posted information from the IRS regarding IP-PIN numbers required during filing of Federal Income Tax for anyone who has had a background check run through the Archdiocese in past years. Following is updated information. Thank you.

The Archdiocese has just learned that the IRS is delayed in issuing IP-PINs. Thus, you may not receive an IP-PIN during this tax season, even though you had a background check performed in connection with service for the Archdiocese, a parish or school. The IRS will continue to issue IP-PINs on a rolling basis. If you have received an IP-PIN, you must use it to file your taxes. If you have not received an IP-PIN, IRS advises that the best way to protect yourself is to file your taxes early. IRS apologizes for the delays and the confusion it has caused.

The FAQs posted in the Archdiocese’s website are being revised accordingly.

If you have questions, please contact the IRS Identity Protection Special Unit at 1-800-908-4490 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Please do not contact the Archdiocese or your parish or school. Neither the Archdiocese nor your parish or school has any further information on the issuance of IP-PINs.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

February 8 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 1:29-39

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now be included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In this story, we learn how Jesus heals people who suffer and are sick. Jesus shows people compassion and kindness; they are healed and their lives are transformed. Jesus is a prayerful person who speaks about the goodness of God. Many people want to listen to him and follow him.

Remember and tell about a time when you were sick, or perhaps seriously ill. Who do you turn to when you suffer? Today, how can Jesus heal people who suffer or are sick?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

If you did NOT have your photo taken

A number of directories will be available to those who did not have their photos taken for the directory. They will be made available at the Parish Office during business hours.

Questions? Contact Rich Hammons at rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Lenten Faith Groups seeking leaders

This Lent we will be having faith groups as we have done in the past. Our focus this year will be “Coming to God with Our True Self.” We will use the publication “Sunday by Sunday,” which focuses on the Sunday readings with reflections and questions for further conversation. Our group leaders in the past have been very gracious in hosting and helping to stir conversation in the groups. To build on what our group leaders have done in the past and foster co-responsibility in our Christian faith, we request for new group leaders this year.

Sign-up sheets at the back of the church. Questions? Contact Anthony Ahamefule

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
