A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Susan is away attending the annual Principals' Retreat, so she has asked me to draw your attention to a few items for this week's Footnotes.

Science Night: March 5th @ 6:30

Don’t forget that this coming Thursday is Science Night. This is one evening you don’t want to miss. Who doesn’t love dropping raw eggs from the second floor in a self-designed container or making florescent slime?

Sink Hole?!

You will be happy to know that the miniature “sink hole” in the blacktop by the tether poles has been repaired.

Tuition Assistance: Deadline = March 1st

If your family would like to apply for financial aid for the coming year, please note that applications are due by March 1 to be eligible for Archdiocesan aid. Applications are available online by clicking here.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Caryn Fiedler
(on behalf of Susan)

Art Matters

I am delighted to announce that our beautiful Poetry Box was installed this week at the edge of the Centennial Rose Garden.  Eighth graders used wood burning tools to decorate the cedar post with botanical images of NW edible plants.

The box is hand-crafted from four types of wood including Mahogany and one-hundred year old re-purposed Rosewood. Poems and illustrations from Madeleine students will be on display for the entire community to enjoy. The first student poem and illustration, by Stefani J. in 8th grade, has been posted for your enjoyment.  The Poetry Box honors my sister, an inspiring poetry and Language Arts teacher, who passed away in March.

Tonight is Fourth Friday, the Free evening at the Portland Art Museum.  Take the whole family and immerse yourselves in amazing art.  Remember, the Art Museum is always free for students.

Be sure to work in a visit to Lan Su, our jewel of a Chinese Garden.  It is Chinese New Year time and they have special events and displays every day through March 5th.

Get ready for Youth Art Month.  March is just around the corner.  Speaking of around the corner, next time you are in the building, come down the hall by the Art room and see what your sons and daughters have been creating.

Mrs. Galash

A "Bark Out" to all who showed a little love for shelter animals for Valentine's Day

Thank you to those that donated new and used, even well loved items to the homeless animals at the Multnomah County Animal Shelter.  We appreciate the kindness, as well as the time and money you shared to help with our donation drive.

The animals will be a little more comfortable during their stay because of YOU.

Because of your generosity, the donation baskets were overflowing!  Good thing Ms. Savery has a big truck to delivery it all.

Mrs. Harmon sends a little "Meow Out" to the third grade writing group for their help in spreading the word and writing thank you letters to the staff and volunteers at the shelter.

What a great way to share some love for Valentine's Day!

Tuition Assistance

If your family would like to apply for financial aid for the coming year, please note that applications are due by March 1 to be eligible for Archdiocesan aid. Applications are available online by clicking here.

Applications are processed by FACTS Tuition Aid, and allocations are determined by the number of people applying and the available pool of money. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give Susan Steele a call.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The seventh grade outdid themselves this week by bringing in 181 well packed lunches.  Even though it seems like spring, the mornings are still chilly and there are often people waiting in line at St Michael’s for warm soup and hearty lunches.  This week, Irvan served up spicy tortilla soup.  Thank you all for the great work you do.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

March 1 ~ Second Sunday of Lent ~ Mark 9:2-10

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In today’s Gospel reading, Mark tells us that Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain. While there, Jesus was transfigured and appeared with Moses and Elijah. Peter, being nervous and wanting to please Jesus, offered to make three tents – one for each of them. Suddenly, they heard the voice of God proclaiming, “This is my beloved son. Listen to Him.” When this was all done and the four were heading back down the mountain, Jesus made them promise not to tell anyone what had happened until he had risen from the dead.

What do you think the word “transfigured” means? If you were one of the disciples and saw this, what would your reaction be? Do you think it was easy for the disciples to keep this secret? Why or why not? Can you keep a secret when asked to?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Lenten Fasting and Abstinence Regulations

Every year, we get questions about the fasting requirements for Catholics during Lent. And, sometimes, those discussions can get animated with family histories, special exceptions and imaginative definitions of fasting. So, we thought this year, we’d publish what the Archdiocese sent us. Enjoy (or don’t, if it’s a Friday!).

To quote:

All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All Catholics between the ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
