May 29, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here are a few “housekeeping” notes from the office. If you purchased milk last year (May 2014) for your child’s cold lunch this year and also participated in the hot lunch program after it began in November, you double paid for milk whenever your child ordered a meal. There was no way in the software system to deduct the previous payment, so we will be issuing a refund in the next week or two. Look for the check in your child’s Friday Folder. If you wish to donate the refund to our hot lunch program, just let me know.

Library Books

Library books are due back by Friday, June 5th. Any lost or damaged books must be taken care of. Check with Mrs. Anderson if you cannot locate a book.

Scrip and Other Outstanding Bills

Scrip balances went out a few weeks ago. Please be sure you have taken care of your scrip commitment. Invoices for unworked volunteer hours will go out next week. Remember, your child will not receive his/her report card if there are any outstanding bills (tuition, library, volunteer hours, scrip) to be taken care of.

Summer Packet Paperwork Due

Many thanks to the wonderful parents who have returned their summer packets to Mrs. Rosebrook. Kudos to the winners of a Starbucks card for being one of the first 20 to turn in the paperwork: Diani, Curley, Kohlbecker, Dugan, Gaber, Allen, Codino, Samuelson, Ashley, Krebs, Kern, Gonzales, Coughlin-Glaser, Davison, Pennick, Boyle, Kapellakis, Sullivan, Rangel, and Wilson. Perhaps the last 20 need to buy Angela a Starbucks card?? The deadline to return all your paperwork is Monday, June 1st.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

AMAZONIf you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, you’ve probably been browsing Amazon. Starting today, a new Madeleine Parents Club program will donate a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

It’s Talent Show Time!

The Madeleine School's 3rd annual talent show is fast approaching, and here are the dates!

Rehearsal (REQUIRED): June 4 @ 3:10pm in the Parish Hall
Show: June 5 @ 1:45 pm in the Parish Hall

Click here to read the talent show rules.

We hope to see you there!

Join the Bridge Program!

Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.  In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

The attached article was published in the June 2013 edition of Edutopia, but its focus on summer learning loss and the ways you can avoid it are clear and sound.  I am including it here in its entirety.  If you would like specific ways to help your child this summer, do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher.  Thanks for another great year.  Carolyn

Madeleine Art has officially entered a new era!

Go to your computer and search “Artsonia Kids Art Museum.” Then, on this user-friendly site, search by school for “The Madeleine” in Portland. Soon you will be seeing your son or daughter's art work, his or her grade's projects, or the entire school's gallery.

K-7 students have at least one piece published. Each student is listed by first name and a number for security. The art will always be there for you to enjoy. You can even start a Fan Club for your kid where family and friends can leave comments that you approve and be notified when a new piece of art is published.

But wait, there's more! You can transform your child's art into treasures. Click on the “Gift Shop” tab to see what dozens of items will look like with their artwork on them. From phone cases to cutting boards, T shirts to journals, there are many things to choose from. Father's Day is just around the corner. Wouldn't Dad or Grandpa love something extra special? As a wonderful bonus, our school receives 20% from everything you order. (As a courtesy to Kids Kreations, please resist purchasing note cards through Artsonia)

Eighth grade parents, just for you, if you would like to create a special keepsake for your son or daughter, bring me a piece of art they made during any of their years at The Madeleine and I will photograph and upload it to the Artsonia site. My official work days are Tues, Wed., and Thursday. Parents of younger kids, start planning that memory quilt or set of coffee cups for their future dorm room today!

We are just getting started with our Artsonia Gallery. Photographing and uploading student work takes time that my half-time teaching position doesn't allow. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new adventure, please let me know. Training takes less than five minutes and much of the work could be done from home.

Eighth Grade Special Art Exhibit

Exhibit begins on June 3rd

As we get ready to say goodbye to our eighth graders, please stop by the hallway by the office and see their final projects of their Madeleine Art experience.

Students proposed their own project ideas, selected their medium, and created their pieces to show the depth and breadth of what they have learned and what inspires them.  From plaster life masks to pastel drawings, painted figures to photography, this special exhibit will be on display starting Wednesday afternoon.  Don't miss it!

8th Grade Thanks Parents Club for Supporting Their Trip to Ashland

The 8th grade would like to gratefully thank and officially acknowledge the generous contribution the Madeleine Parents Club contributed to our Ashland field trip.  It was a wonderful trip!!!!

We took in two productions, the musical "Guys and Dolls" and the Shakespearean comedy "Much Ado About Nothing."   Both productions were absolutely fantastic.  This was both a fun end-of-year 8th grade trip, as well as the educational culminating activity for our Shakespeare unit of study.  It is sure to be an experience that the students will remember for years to come.

The Parent's Club works so hard, and  volunteer countless hours on the school's behalf.  We are sincerely and deeply thankful.  The 8th grade feels so blessed to have such a supportive Parent's Club.

youthYouth Group Continues During the Summer!

Sunday, June 7th @ 7pm

Come join us for food, fellowship and fun in the "teen room" from 7-8:15pm.

Youth Group will continue to meet during the summer!  Be sure to check out the "youth ministry" link from The Madeleine home page for the most up to date events and times. Mark your calendars for upcoming summer youth night dates:  June 21, July 12, July 26, August 2, August 16th, and Saturday, August 22nd - all day concert in Salem.

Madeleine parents!  Another great way to earn Volunteer Community hours is to work with The Madeleine parish's Middle School or High School Youth Ministry program.  It's fun and rewarding for both kids and volunteers!  Help keep this active youth ministry program alive for our kids!  Contact Juliana Weis at jsweis@themadeleine.edu if you are interested.

It’s time for the Summer Reading challenge!

The Summer Reading program is well under way.  The younger grades have user names and passwords coming home in Friday Folders.  All students can record their minutes from May 4- September 4th.  It's a fun way to stay motivated to read over the summer and avoid the "summer slide."

The past two years The Madeleine has been second in the state for reading minutes.  Lets see what we can do this summer!

Join us for an evening in Bollywood, the 29th Annual Madeleine Auction.  Our buildings will be transformed with the exotic sights, sounds, smells  and tastes of India.

For more information visit www.themadeleine.edu/auction

Questions to auction@themadeleine.edu

We Want Your Ideas for the 2015 Auction Paddle Raise!

The Paddle Raise is a unique opportunity where the Madeleine community gets to designate money to a specific area.

Significant improvements have been made to the Library, Art Room, Kitchen, and Technology in the past few years. The Teachers' Lounge and Parent Work Room will undergo a facelift this summer thanks to the 2014 Auction.

What is next? Enhancements for the Music Program? Bathroom updates? Facility needs (roof, floors, etc.)??

We want to hear from YOU! Send ideas to auction@themadeleine.edu

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

Congratulations to the fourth grade for bringing in a 240 sack lunches this week!  That’s a huge accomplishment, and we are very grateful for your dedication.  Lots of hungry people were fed from your generosity, and my guess is they dined on your lunches for a few days.

Next week is our last St. Michael’s delivery of the year, and I’m certain the third grade will represent the Madeleine with great enthusiasm!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

May 31 ~ Most Holy Trinity ~ Matthew 28: 16-20

Today’s Gospel reading is from the Book of Matthew and in it we are told how the eleven disciples went to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus had told them to meet him. When Jesus meets them there, he says, “God has given me all the power and authority of heaven and earth. Now I am sending you out to preach to all the nations. I want you to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to keep my commandments and do all that I have taught you. And I promise you that I am with you always----yes, to the very end of the world.”

Are the disciples of Jesus still doing those things today? How can you preach to others? Talk about some of the ways you keep the commandments. Remember that every time we make the sign of the cross we are proclaiming that we are baptized Christians. What was Jesus’ promise? Tell about a time when you really felt Jesus was beside you.

Polly.Dugan What's Cool About Our School!

Madeleine parent Polly Dugan’s debut novel “The Sweetheart Deal,” hit bookstore shelves this week. Her first book, “So Much a Part of You,” a linked short story collection, was published last June and will be available in paperback on August 11th.

She will be reading and signing books at Powell’s on Thursday, June 11th at 7:30. She is also available to meet with book clubs in the area. If your book club is interested, visit her website at www.pollydugan.com and follow the book club link to get in touch!

Summer Camps

At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

Join us Sunday for Anthony’s reception

Our beloved Seminarian Intern Anthony Ahamefule was ordained to the Diaconate last Saturday...now let’s congratulate him!

Deacon Anthony will return to The Madeleine to preach at the Masses of May 30 & 31 with a reception to follow after the 10:00 am Sunday Mass. Please join us!

St. Vincent de Paul collection this weekend

This weekend, we will hold our semi-annual collection for The Madeleine Conference of St. Vincent de Paul. The selfless volunteers here make up one of our parish’s most important and active ministries, reaching out to and helping all in need—without question or judgement. Please be generous.

Send us your 2015 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of Class of 2015 high school graduates from The Madeleine in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduate’s name by June 7 so we may list them in our June 14 bulletin.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
