A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Looking ahead, the week of October 20th is going to be a busy one. We have Parent-Teacher conferences scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (morning only) and then a professional development session on curriculum mapping for the teachers. I hope the teachers aren’t too exhausted after 3 days of telling you how fabulous your children are…and they truly are fabulous. Please be sure that you have signed up for a conference time. Not sure??? Give Angela a call because we have the signup sheets in the office. Also, please respect that the time set aside for conferences is not a long vacation weekend. Every effort should be made to meet with your child’s teacher within the three day time period.

Hot Lunch Kick-Off

Also, during this busy week, we will be kicking off our new hot lunch program. On Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 20 and 21) we will invite all of the children to try a meal for FREE! Nora Balsz, our kitchen manager, would even like to invite parents to join us for one of the two days.  The menu will be spaghetti, with or without meat sauce, on Monday and nachos with a choice of beef, pork or cheese on Tuesday. Both meals will include all the fixings that go with the meal. Nora needs a head count to prepare the correct amount of food so please click here to be included in the count.

Ordering lunches after the two “freebies” will take place online. You will be able to see the monthly menu, place your order, and pay….all online. We will have complete directions for you at conferences and in next week’s Footnotes.

I am off again this weekend to pick the last of the grapes with my family. I just heard the expected monsoon that was predicted for Sunday isn’t arriving until Monday or Tuesday. Praise God! One of these days we will have to put away the sandals and bring out the umbrellas, but for now…..enjoy the lovely fall days.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Raise your paddles for The Madeleine teachers

Over the years we’ve raised our paddles for a great many things.  This year we’re raising our paddles for the people who spend countless hours to inspire our children, invigorate their learning, and ignite their spirituality: our teachers.

Teachers need fuel. A simple cup of coffee, a quiet respite from a noisy day, a place to regroup and be comfortable while having lunch. A place in which to feel appreciated by those they serve.

The funds from this year’s Paddle Raise will help transform the Teacher’s Lounge into just that place with a much-needed makeover, including more space with rejuvenated décor, updated appliances, and new furniture.

Please join us on November 8th at the 2014 Madeleine Auction and raise your paddles to show our teachers how much we appreciate everything they do for our kids. Raising your paddle is a 100% tax-deductible investment in our school.

St. Michael's Lunches: 4th grade

New School Record!

4-4-4, 444, or four hundred and forty four lunches, that’s how many the fourth graders brought in this week!  A new school record that I pray won’t be broken any time soon.

A huge thank you goes out to the Scharle/Gehred family for bringing in 208 sandwiches and seventh graders, Jeanne Manthey and Sophia Gonzales for generously helping out while the eight graders were on a field trip.  This was a haul I would not have wanted to attempt without some help. The Madeleine generosity continues to inspire our friends at St. Michael’s; job well done!

Calling all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders!

Sunday, October 12th @ 7pm

Time to take a study break!  Come celebrate The Madeleine’s Youth Ministry kickoff event on Sunday, October 12th from 7-8:15pm in the Parish Hall.  It will be a fun-filled evening of games, food (ice cream & cupcakes), music, and fellowship.  Grab your classmate and bring your creative ideas to help plan for more upcoming events and activities throughout the year.  The Madeleine Youth Ministry will meet regularly on Sunday evenings in the Parish Hall or at another pre-planned location.  Please contact youth minister, Juliana Weis, at jweis@themadeleine.edu if you have any questions.

Cool About Our School

8th grader donates to the auction!

Eighth grader, Greta, has donated a dessert a month for six months.  And, she has learned from the very best!  She has interned with the amazing Kathy Laskowski, a former Madeleine parent whose desserts used to sell at the live auction for $3,000!

So, whether you have a special dinner party, Christmas Dinner, or just another Tuesday evening, Greta will create something special to fill your tummy.

Art After Hours is back!

Tuesdays from 3pm - 4pm

Exclusively for middle school students, Art After Hours is for those who want a little more art in their lives. Students can create something new, explore all the cool art materials that don't get brought out on a regular basis, work on their current art project, add artistic flourishes to projects for other classes, or even help Mrs. Galash keep the art room ready for action. Listen to music, hang out with friends, create something cool. Art After Hours will be Tuesdays from three-ish to four-ish in the Art Room. Come occasionally, or come every week, but let your parents know where you will be.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and the Madeleine is showing our support. Beginning on Wednesday, October 15, each student may wear one pink accent with their uniform. So lets see those pink socks, belt, wrist band, etc from the 15th through the end of October.

To end our pink month, Student Government is hosting a $2 Pink Out free dress day on Wednesday, October 29th. So wear all the pink that you can find, and the class who shows the most pink spirit will be honored with a pink balloon! The money raised will be donated to cancer research! Good luck!

Seen on campus

Handsome young men wearing ties!

In order to keep up with the trend, Mrs. Steele has worked with Dennis Uniform to make ties available in the uniform plaid for both girls and boys.  You have a choice of traditional, clip-on or a girls-only style and can buy them now in the school office for only $10.  Check them out!

Note that the ties must be worn with a button-down, collared shirt – not polo shirts.  Have your own tie you like wearing?  Go right ahead.

Safety and Security Meeting

Earlier this week the Madeleine Safety and Security Committee (SSC) held its first meeting of the school year. Click here to read the agenda from the meeting.

Each month, SSC reviews and approves the meeting minutes from the previous meeting.  There were no meetings held over the summer, so last night the meeting minutes from June were approved.  Click here to read the meeting minutes from the June SSC meeting.  Please note that since work is ongoing on many of these issues, some of the information may have changed/been updated since these meeting minutes were originally written.
