A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Severe Allergic Reactions

The Archdiocese has asked us to review our protocols for working with students who are known to have reactions to certain allergens in the environment. We are reviewing our procedures so that we can respond to the needs of a student who has an unexpected severe allergic reaction (SAR). The first step is to identify any children who know they could have a reaction to bee stings, peanuts, certain foods, etc. We are asking our parents to please, please, please, let us know if your child is in this category AND if your physician has developed a plan to deal with an emergency. We will keep this on file and follow those directions.

For your information, we have staff trained to recognize a severe allergic reaction and administer an Epi-Pen injection in a life-threatening situation while 911 help is being summoned. Again, it would be helpful if we knew which students are at risk for this intervention. Also, if your child suffers from any medical condition that could require our assistance, please let us know so that we are prepared in an emergency.

Standardized Testing

This week we began a new testing program that was selected by the Archdiocese of Portland. Instead of setting aside two weeks in October for standardized testing (using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills), we are assessing our students’ progress in reading and math three times a year, with an additional baseline test this year. Each test is only 30-40 minutes in length and is taken using a computer or iPad. The students begin with material that is at their grade level and then advances to more challenging content if the student correctly answers the questions or moves to easier content if the student makes too many errors. And the tests are all different because of the huge databank of questions.  It is quite incredible what technology can do. We are just getting our feet wet with the new program and working the bugs out, but we will have student reports and data available for you at our fall Parent Teacher conferences. Stay tuned for more information, keeping in mind that any standardized testing program shows us only one glimpse of our children as learners.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Food Drive Starts Monday

Bring your non-perishable food

To honor the great saint, St. Vincent de Paul, and to support our local SVDP Society, we are having a canned food drive. The SVDP society provides food for people who are in need. Our Madeleine parish has a very active group who have asked for help to replenish their food pantry.

Each class will have a box to collect non-perishable food, boxes, cans, or packages starting on Monday, Sept. 22nd. We will collect all week and each class will present our offerings at our Thursday school Mass. Please help our food drive by sending in whatever you can. Thank you on behalf of the SVDP Society.

This coming Tuesday is picture day, so don't forgot that students have a choice to come to school in either free dress or their school uniform.

Avoid a Parking Ticket

It continues to be important for everyone parking on the street to do so facing in the correct direction. One of our neighbors has indicated that he will call the police department to hand out reminders to those who choose to park facing in the wrong direction or those who choose to block driveways.

Tee It Up for Technology

Plans set for first expenditure

As you may recall, Madeleine's first golf tournament, Tee It Up for Technology, raised $3500 for the school's Technology Fund.

A portion of the funds raised from the golf tournament will be used to purchase Apple TVs for those classrooms that don't already have one.  Apple TVs facilitate whole classroom learning by enabling the teachers to stream and project content from their digital device onto a larger screen to lead a class brainstorm or walk everyone through a presentation. Students can also connect with Apple TV, giving them the ability to share projects and other work on the big screen.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding how your generous support of the golf tournament benefits the technology used by our kids at Madeleine.

Hot Lunch Update

Five-day-a-week hot lunch planned

Now that the kitchen remodel is complete, the facility can now support a five-day-a-week hot lunch program.  Susan has been interviewing a cook who will prepare meals four days each week from scratch. One day each week will continue the Parents Club tradition of parents serving fun food, such as pizza and hot dogs, to the students.

All menus, ordering, and payment transactions will take place online in order to make the process as user-friendly as possible for families. Stay tuned for when the hot lunch program will start and other associated details!

School Advisory Council (SAC) Meeting

Last night the School Advisory Council (SAC) held its first meeting of the school year. Click here to read the agenda from last night's meeting.

Each month, SAC reviews and approves the meeting minutes from the previous meeting.  There were no meetings held over the summer, so last night the meeting minutes from June were approved.  Click here to read the meeting minutes from the June SAC meeting.  Please note that since work is ongoing on many of these issues, some of the information may have changed/been updated since these meeting minutes were originally written.

The next SAC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th at 7pm in the school library. All meetings are open to visitors unless specifically designated as being closed. If you would like to attend the meeting and add something to the agenda, please contact the Chair prior to the meeting. (Lee Fiedler: lee.fiedler@yahoo.com).

The purpose of the Madeleine School Advisory Council (SAC) is to provide advice to Father Mike and Susan Steele regarding policy direction for program needs of the school, especially in Planning, Finances, Technology and Development.

Please bring the tools that you will need, such as shovels, yard brooms, wheel barrows, etc.

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better.

News You Can Use

What's up with the hole in the ceiling?

Many of you may have noticed the rather large hole in the ceiling in the main hallway near the front office. And, you are probably wondering when the hole will be closed.

Sadly, one of the pipes sprung a leak late in the summer. The good news is that the plumbing repairs are complete and a contractor will be in next week to do the final wall work and replace the ceiling tiles.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

There is a Teen Etiquette for Self-Esteem class at the MAC club starting on October 8th from 6-7:30.  Some topics include posture, introductions, table manners and how to be a school leader.  If you are interested in this class for your child (11 and older), please email Melanie Perko at rsvpm@comcast.net for the complete class schedule and registration information … or see me for more information.

Be An Angel Among Us

Fall Teacher Wish Lists

Be an Angel and consider funding or finding a gift from the “Teacher’s Wish List.” These items are not in the budget, but would enhance the classroom. Thanks to the many angels last year, donations to the teacher’s wish list provided hundreds of dollars in classroom supplies! Earn your wings this year and join the many angels in our midst!

Attention 5th - 8th graders: New PE Uniforms

The new PE uniforms, which will now include an option to wear sweatpants during the cold winter months, will be available through Dennis Uniforms in the next few weeks. This will be a transition year, so both the old and new uniforms will be acceptable. Next year all 5th - 8th graders will be required to wear the new uniforms.

St. Michael's Lunches: 7th grade

The seventh grade brought in 177 lunches this week, quite a haul for our second week of delivery.  I think the volunteers are very happy to be receiving all these sandwiches as it greatly reduces their time in the kitchen preparing meal for the guests who dine at the church.  Thank you seventh grade for all your time and effort, great job!

Coaching for Character Conference

October 4th at Jesuit High School

This conference features a great lineup of motivational speakers including Bruce Brown, Alberto Salazar, and Darren Treasure. The workshop runs from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and is only $50, which includes lunch, or $25 for the morning session. This conference will be great for staff, parents, and coaches. The workshop is designed for youth coaches and parents, but is applicable to anyone who motivates young people.

The point of the conference is to address the heart of coaching- not the x's and o's or the technical side but everything in between. We hope to spend a day addressing issues like the tension between winning and formation, between talent and grit, between developing strength that doesn't bully, tensions between coaching girls versus coaching boys, and how what we teach on the field actually matters more off the field.

To register for this conference, go to www.jesuitportland.org/manresa. Full day participants can also purchase .5 semester Master's Degree credits from the University of Portland for an additional $25.00. The conference counts for 8 PDU's.

Parish seeking new members for Pastoral Council

The Madeleine Parish is looking to our community for two new members of our Pastoral Council, a new Chairperson and a new Vice Chairperson.

Pastoral Council serves in an advisory role to the Pastor on issues of parish pastoral planning. It is responsible for the ongoing process of developing and renewing long- and short-range priorities for pastoral ministry. Through a process of discernment and consensus, the Pastoral Council offers recommendations to the Pastor regarding pastoral planning.

The Chairperson’s responsibilities are to chair and call all Council meetings, prepare and supervise the election of Council members, prepare an agenda for each meeting, and coordinate with the Pastor regarding the agenda and Pastoral Council needs.

The Vice-Chairperson assumes the responsibilities of the Chairperson in her/his absence.

Eligibility

All parishioners who have received the sacrament of Confirmation, are not parish or school staff, and who are at least 15 years of age are eligible to be elected to the Pastoral Council.

A strong Pastoral Council is vital to the operation and outreach of our parish. If you are interested in being considered, please contact Father Mike, 503-281-5777, or fathermike@themadeleine.edu.

Project Updates

It’s been a very busy summer around the campus.  And as we get settled into our fall routines, look around and see what’s new, what’s fixed, what’s improved.

KITCHEN: All new improved appliances and commercial refrigerators and freezers. Plus a new dishwasher, shelving and conversion of a janitorial closet into a dry pantry. This was generously funded by the paddle raise at the 2013 Madeleine Auction.

BOILER: Our 1955 vintage boiler went kaput, so a new one is in the process of being installed, hopefully in time for the cooler weather. Not only new, but greatly improved, as it’ll be fired with gas instead of oil. Total cost of this is $127,000 of which we have raised $90,000. If you can help, contact Father Mike or James Wurzer.

SECURITY UPDATE: We have installed intrusion sensors in all the first-floor school rooms and new arm/disarm keypads in the school and parish hall.

FENCE: The fence around the Field of Dreams is in need of repair, and we’re getting bids.

PLAYGROUND: The Playground for all Players project is complete with this summer’s installation of a soft playground surface to replace the old wood chips. Not only is it safer, it’s accessible for children with assistive equipment to reach the accessible equipment.

GOT 15 MINUTES?  STOP IN FOR A FAITH FILL-UP!

In just 15 extra minutes on Sunday morning, our young parishioners will grow in faith and love of God and our Church. Third through eighth graders can arrive at 9:40 am on Sunday mornings for a fast and fun lesson. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are led in games, stories, songs and activities by Peggy Albertine and our seminarian intern Anthony Ahamafule.  Middle school students will have a gospel reflection and discussion with Becky Moore and Juliana Weis. Give it a try next week!

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
