A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The new year is putting many new events on the calendar, and I want to be sure that they are on your radar. As I said last week, it is hard to believe that we are beginning to plan for next year. Thank you to all the wonderful parents who returned their re-registration forms this week. This really helps us to know how many openings we will be able to offer prospective parents. If you still have your form and do plan to return next year, please send it in ASAP. By the way, if you know of new families with Kindergarten age children, please squelch the rumor that we have no openings in Kindergarten. So far only 7 siblings have registered and so we will be able to welcome many new families to our community. Word of mouth advertising is the best, so please sing the praises of our school to those who might be looking for a great academic start with Mrs. Schneider!

Auction Kick-off Party

Next week we will also begin planning for next year’s Auction. All auction chairs and sub-chairs are invited to a thank you party on Jan. 22nd at 7:00 in the parish hall. We are also hosting our 3rd grade parents for a “mandatory” meeting to select, persuade, cajole, plead and/or convince a few hardy souls to take on the job of chairing the auction. It appears we have many sub-chairs who are willing to stay on for another year, so that gives much support to the new chairs. If you are a sub-chair or a third grade parent, we hope to see you next Thursday.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is also on the horizon, January 25-30. A complete schedule of activities will be in next week’s Footnotes. Enjoy the three day weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Food and Fun!

Saturday, February 7th

Many, many thanks to Joanna Curley and Tessa Siegel for stepping up and volunteering to co-chair this year's Spaghetti Dinner. Stay tuned to next week's Friday Footnotes for all the details about this fun-filled, family evening.

Oregon Duck Free Dress Day Raises $284!

Although the Ducks did not win the National Championship, Madeleine came out ahead thanks to the initiative of its Student Government.

This past Monday, Madeleine students proudly paid $2 each to wear their Ducks gear in support of the team.  This effort raised $284.

All of the money raised will go to the new water fountain that was just installed on our first floor. Thanks for showing your support for the amazing Oregon Ducks!

Important Information Regarding Tax Identity Fraud

The IRS informed the Archdiocese of Portland that, in an effort to assist individuals potentially affected by tax fraud, it is attempting to issue an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) number to every individual who had a criminal background check processed through the former background check vendor for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon and the Archdiocese of Seattle, regardless of when, or for which parish, school or other organization.

The IP PIN number has been or will be sent by the IRS via US Mail by early January 2015.  The IP-PIN must be included on your 2014 tax return. The IRS will not process returns that do not include this IP PIN number in an effort to protect people from having a fraudulent return filed in their name for the 2014 tax year.

Youth Group Night This Sundayyouth

Sunday, January 18th @ 7pm

This Sunday evening, 1/18, the Middle School Youth Ministry night will take place in the teen room upstairs (where the old church used to be).

From 7-8:15, we will meet with our UP student leaders for a night of fun, fellowship and snacks.  Come check out the place!

Madeleine families have graciously donated furniture and games for the room.  Soon, we hope to mount a flat screen TV and a DVD sound system so that we can have a movie night in early February.

Contact Juliana at jweis@themadeleine.edu or 503-753-6560 if you have any questions.

Auction Kick-Off Party

Thursday, January 22 @ 7pm in Parish Hall

Who: All 2014 Auction Sub Chairs & Current 3rd Grade Families

It’s takes a village to plan and execute a successful auction. Please join us in thanking our 2014 auction sub-chairs and help the 3rd Grade Class select the 2015 Auction Chairs.

“We want to thank all of the brave parents who stepped into leadership roles in 2014 and let them know how much we appreciate their efforts. Also, it is time to find out who wants to lead the 2015 Auction," says Mrs. Steele.

Although the next auction is 10 months away, there are some key decisions the new team needs to make in the near future. We will have dinner and drinks for all our attendees.

Click here to read Frequently Asked Questions about the auction.

Madeleine Career Dayannounce

Friday, January 23rd @ 8:30am

Career Day for Madeleine students in grades 3 - 8 will be held this Friday, January 23rd.

Ten parents will each give a hands-on career presentation to rotating groups of students in grades 3 - 8.  Career presentations were chosen to highlight the multiple intelligence theory (see "Counselor Corner" column below).  Get your kids excited to hear about the following careers:

Many thanks to Tina Anctil, Alison Anderson, Lynn Robinson and Carolyn Ullman for their hard work in putting together this wonderful, new event for our students.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate strengths in how children and adults process and understand information.

I will be highlighting each of the multiple intelligences in the next few Friday Footnotes.

Madeleine “Mathletes” clean up at Mathfest

Last weekend, more than 150 local students gathered at Central Catholic High School to compete in the 15th annual Math Fest. Two “mathletes” from each school were paired with 2 students from another school, and put their agile brains to work in 5 group problem-solving events.

Participants from The Madeleine School this year were: 7th Graders Amelia L., Ian H., Bailey B., Atticus K.; 8th Graders Ben R., Brigid H., Kate T., Harper G.

Madeleine kids won multiple team events. In addition, Atticus brought home top honors as the winner of the highest individual award, given to the student with the best score on the exam known as the “conTEST.” This is the second consecutive year that a Madeleine School student has won this award.

Congratulations to all!

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

Congratulations to the third grade for bringing in 311 lunches today.

As we delivered bags and bags of lunches to the basement of St. Michael’s three men stopped to thank us for our generosity.  Even on a sunny Tuesday, the early morning temperatures made for a cold wait outside and the thought of warm soup and sandwiches awaiting them was a comfort.  Thank you third grade students and families for your continued support of this valuable program.

School Advisory Council (SAC) Meeting

Last night the School Advisory Council held its monthly meeting.  Click here to read the agenda from last night.

The next SAC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 19th at 7pm in the school library. All are welcome to attend meetings; please notify the Chair (Lee Fiedler: lee.fiedler@yahoo.com) in advance if you would like time on the agenda.

Family Faith Sharing

January 18 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ John 1:35-42

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now be included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In this Gospel, Jesus is called the Lamb of God, Rabbi, and the Messiah. What’s in a name? Why is Jesus called the Lamb of God? What does “messiah” mean? Rabbi means “teacher.” What has Jesus taught you? Find out if your name has a meaning. What are some other names Jesus is called?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Crab Feed Volunteers and items needed

Our annual Crab Feed is right around the corner! This wonderful community event thrives because of the great work of our volunteers! So, can you help?

Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers again to help in the kitchen on the day of the event, set up, childcare, serving and clean up.

Donations to silent auction

We will also have a small silent auction again. As always, we need your donations of wine, gift certificates, tickets, vacation homes, etc.
If you can help, please contact Janeen Reilly Allred, janeenreilly13@gmail.com or 503-819-2526.

Children’s Liturgy Of The Word—adult leaders needed!

We are in need of a few more catechists for our Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) program. CLW is the pull-out program for kids during 10 am Mass on Sundays. We need additional teachers for both groups: the pre-K/K group, and the 1st-5th grade group. At this time we are looking specifically for adults or one teen/one adult working together.
Teaching CLW is an easy and fun way to get involved with our parish community and earn service hours as well. We provide all the materials needed. The commitment is approximately one Sunday every five weeks. If you would like to get involved, please contact Becky: bmoore@themadeleine.edu or 503-281-5777 x27.

Parish Office will be closed Monday, Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
