A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to the ’14-’15 school year. I trust you and your family had a wonderful, relaxing vacation and are ready to embark on the new year. It seemed like we had a smooth opening. I didn’t see any tears-- from students or parents or teachers. All looked ready to begin the September routine and leave summer days behind.

It was a pleasure hosting our new families last night at the New Parent Potluck. There was lots of positive energy in the room as people introduced themselves and began the process of joining the Madeleine community. Thanks to Caryn Fiedler, our Bridge Program coordinator, for organizing the evening, Alyssa Pace, our Parents Club president, for helping with set-up and clean-up, and to the many parents and committee chairs who were in attendance to greet our new families and field questions.

I know there are always questions, and we hope to answer many of them at our Back to School night next Thursday, September 11th. You can always email teachers or the office with specific questions, and I especially prefer a phone call for a question that needs more than a “yes” or “no” answer. The Thursday night agenda will cover the various means of communication that we have in place as well as many other topics. We will start promptly at 7:05 in the parish hall. Hope to see you then.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

SCRIP NEWS

Regular weekday sales of Scrip begin Monday, September 8th through Friday from 8:20 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  Look for the Madeleine Scrip Order Form in your Friday folder for your ordering options.

There are only two unfilled weekly sales positions left!  We have one position for Wednesday and one for Friday mornings.  These positions require a regular commitment through the school year.  Selling scrip is a great way to fulfill all of your fundraising hours and then some + an opportunity to meet lots of Madeleine school parents.

Questions? Contact Cathy Keaney at cathy@keaneylaw.com.

Greetings from the Art Room!

Welcome to a brand new school year. I'm very excited about what your kids will be learning and doing in art over the next nine months. We have already kicked off projects for the Kids Kreations, the art that is transformed into beautiful note cards, ready to order at Auction time.

I hope your sons and daughters had plenty of opportunities to be creative over the summer. I know Betsy R. did – she was the first 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student to show me her Sketch Book Challenge summer drawings. Congratulations, Betsy! Enjoy your prize and keep on sketching.

There is an optional Christmas Card Contest for grades K – 5. The theme needs to be religious, such as angels, the Nativity, the Three kings, etc. Work should be brightly colored and measure 5 X 7. The student's name, grade and school should be written on the back. If your child wishes to participate, I will need the completed entries by October 1.

Stop by the art hallway and see the extensive display of photographs of the art of Andy Goldsworthy. All nine grades wrapped up the school year learning about his art and creating in his style. He is a remarkable and inspirational artist.

Regards,
Mrs. Galash

Counselor Corner

Dear Parents:

Welcome back!

I wanted to start the year off by informing you of some important upcoming events.  The first is a series of happenings hosted by Project Wild Thing, which is a movement whose mission is to reconnect kids with nature.  I have a flyer outside my office, but I am also including links in this newsletter.

The other is an announcement about a presentation by Marydee Sklar on Executive Functioning on September 29 at 7:00 - 9:00 pm at The Madeleine School.  This presentation is free of charge.  Parents and educators are welcome.  This is a subject that touches every aspect of our lives and our students’ lives.  This will be an evening well-spent!

Thanks for spreading the word!

Thank You for Rounding Up!

Thank you to the 45 families who rounded up their tuition payment for the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign!

Our Annual Fund Campaign supports our tuition assistance program and helps close the $360,882 gap between what everyone pays in tuition and the actual cost of educating our students.

You still have the power to help us keep a Madeleine education accessible and affordable for everyone!

If received by September 30th, the impact of your donation will be doubled since 100% of your tax-deductible gift will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation.

Click here to make a flat donation of any amount to the Annual Fund.

On behalf of all the students who receive financial aid, thank you for your generous support!

Questions? Contact Lynn Robinson, Development Director, at 503-288-9197 or lrobinson@themadeleine.edu.

Help The Madeleine earn free money!

Register your Fred Meyer Rewards card today!  If every school family registered, we would generate $19,367 per year for the school!

Here’s how the program works:

Tee It Up for Technology Wins Big

The Madeleine School's first golf tournament, Tee It Up for Technology, raised $3500 for the school's Technology Fund.

Congratulations to the Christensen Team of
Ed O'Hanlon '73, Michael DeMont, Jim Christensen, and Tom Christensen for winning the tournament with a low score of 60!

Thank you Brian Grant, Madeleine's PE and Health teacher, for coming up with the idea for this great, new event.  Thank you also to everyone who participated and volunteered to make our first golf tournament a success!

Join us for our
2014 Parish Picnic, Sept. 14

After 10:00 Mass, starting about 11:00

Families are back from their busy summers, kids are in school, parish events get back into full swing...and our Parish Picnic kicks it all off. It has been one of the biggest events each year, and we look forward to another great one this year.

Gospel Mass at 10:00 am

This year, join our new Music Director, Maria Manzo, along with the The Madeleine choirs and instrumentalists for a toe-tappin’ Gospel Mass at 10:00 am! A truly joyous celebration that’s a perfect lead-in to our picnic!

Picnic to follow on the parish grounds

After Mass, come on out to the parish grounds where we’ll have food, beverages, games, kids’ activities, entertainment and fellowship. Hamburgers and hot dogs, grilled to perfection by the Knights of Columbus, will be on the menu.

Please bring a dessert to share.

First Saturday Devotion
September 6

Mass on Saturday, September 6, 7:30 am

Our third First Saturday Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary at The Madeleine is tomorrow, September 6. Mass will be held at 7:30 am in the Church. Plus, mark your calendar for subsequent First Saturday dates: Oct. 4 and Nov. 1. Information flyer at www.themadeleine.edu/devotion.

Sign up Now for First Reconciliation and First Communion

"Last call" for First Reconciliation/First Communion registration! Friday, September 12th is the last day to sign up. The first class is Sunday, Sept. 14th at 9 AM in the School Commons. The class is led by Catherine Glavan and Keinya Kohlbecker. It is a very hands-on approach to the sacraments, based on the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (a Montessori program). Registration forms are online at themadeleine.edu/faithformation.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
