A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every year I feel like school is finally in full swing after our Back To School Night. There is no turning back. Teachers are anxious to share their curriculum plans, parents want to know what is ahead for their children, and I stress about communicating any new initiatives or programs—and get everyone home by 9:00. Mission impossible, most years. Thank you so much for coming last night. I know we covered a lot of topics, so don’t hesitate to give the office or your teacher a call if you need more information.

Speaking of information, I want to give a shout out to our Development Office, namely Lynn Robinson, Caryn Fiedler, and Rich Hammons for preparing the excellent flyer that they handed out last night. It summarized and brought us up to date on the status of fundraising activities and projects and listed events that are on the horizon. Thanks so much Development Team.

One thing I promised last night was further information on the Archdiocesan child abuse prevention program, Called To Protect. Because your child’s safety is our number one priority, we follow the directives given to us by the Office of Child Protection. If you wish to volunteer with children here at school or in the parish, you must do three things.

To stay active in Called To Protect you must renew your background check every three years and each year view an online video on the topic. In September we find out what that video is and if you click here you will find detailed instructions on how to log on and complete this step. Viewing the videos begins the year after you complete the in-person training and continues each year after that. I know that is a lot to remember, so give us a call in the office if you are confused. Also, if you wish to volunteer in your child’s class, don’t wait until the last moment to complete these steps.

Finally, please remember the Parish Mass and Picnic this Sunday. It should be a great day to celebrate with the Madeleine community!

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Join us for our 2014 Parish Picnic

Sunday, September 14th

After 10:00 Mass, starting about 11:00

Families are back from their busy summers, kids are in school, parish events get back into full swing...and our Parish Picnic kicks it all off. It has been one of the biggest events each year, and we look forward to another great one this year.

Gospel Mass at 10:00 am

This year, join our new Music Director, Maria Manzo, along with the The Madeleine choirs and instrumentalists for a toe-tappin’ Gospel Mass at 10:00 am! A truly joyous celebration that’s a perfect lead-in to our picnic!

Picnic to follow on the parish grounds

After Mass, come on out to the parish grounds where we’ll have food, beverages, games, kids’ activities, entertainment and fellowship. Hamburgers and hot dogs, grilled to perfection by the Knights of Columbus, will be on the menu.

Please bring a dessert to share.

Donations

Get your donation in by 7pm tonight (Friday), and you'll be in the running to win a $50 scrip card. Click here to submit your donation online.  Remember that top selling items are events and packages that can be shared! Team up with some friends and make a package that will whip people into a bidding frenzy!

Volunteers

If you are attending the Parish Picnic this weekend, you can earn some volunteer hours by helping to promote the auction. Stop by the auction table to help pass out flyers!  In addition, if you have a child in 4th grade or higher who is willing to wear their uniform to the picnic, they can earn community service hours by helping promote the auction.

Paddle Raise and Other Big News

Stay tuned because before you know it we will be announcing this year's paddle raise and honorary auction chair!

Questions? Visit www.themadeleine.edu/auction or send an email to auction@themadeleine.edu.

Friendship Family Fall Picnic

Tuesday, September 16th

This coming Tuesday, we will be having our first Friendship Family event of the school year. Friendship Families are mixed-age groups of students who get together periodically throughout the year for fun and fellowship.

For the upcoming picnic, we ask that all students bring their own individual sandwich of choice and something to share for a community meal:

7th & 8th graders - please bring 8 juice boxes each

5th & 6th graders - please bring 8 servings of fruit or vegetables each

3rd & 4th graders - please bring 8 servings of chips or cookies

K, 1st & 2nd graders - please bring 8 servings of snack items each (granola bars, handi-snax,cheesesticks, etc.)

Safety & Parking Announcements

As Susan mentioned at Back-to-School Night, it is important for everyone parking on the street to do so facing in the correct direction. One of our neighbors has indicated that he may call the police department on Monday morning to hand out reminders to those who choose to park facing in the wrong direction or those who choose to block driveways.

In another safety matter, please remind your children that if they ride a bike or scooter to school, they must "walk their wheels" as soon as they leave the sidewalk and cross onto the black asphalt.

Annual Fund Deadline Approaching

Donate by September 30th to double your donation!

Did you know that tuition does not cover the actual cost of educating our students?  Each year we must make up the $360,000 gap through fundraising activities such as The Madeleine School Annual Fund Campaign. To bridge this gap, The Madeleine Annual Fund Campaign was raises money for the Endowment and Tuition Assistance Funds in order to keep Catholic education affordable for all families.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, current parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and parishioners, the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign has already raised over $15,000 toward our $25,000 goal!

You have the power to help keep a Madeleine education accessible and affordable for everyone!

If received by September 30th, the impact of your donation will be doubled since 100% of your tax-deductible gift will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation.

Click here to make a donation to the Annual Fund.

On behalf of all the students who receive financial aid, thank you for your generous support!

An Update on Matthew

We are happy to report that prior to a hip operation scheduled earlier this week for Matthew A., a fifth grader here at Madeleine, the doctors determined that there was no longer a need to proceed with his planned surgery. His cast is off, and he is now starting physical therapy. With this happy news, he may be back weeks earlier than planned!

Earlier this week, the entire 5th grade class filmed a heartwarming video for Matthew wishing him well and letting him know how much he was missed at school.

Please keep Matthew and his family in your thoughts and prayers!

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Anxiety seems to be a common experience for many kids. All children experience some anxiety in the form of worry, apprehension, fear or distress. Occasional nervousness and periodic anxieties occur when a child is first faced with an unfamiliar or especially stressful situation. However, there can be red flags to look for when a child is experiencing too much worry.

Be An Angel Among Us

Fall Teacher Wish Lists

Be an Angel and consider funding or finding a gift from the “Teacher’s Wish List.” These items are not in the budget, but would enhance the classroom. Thanks to the many angels last year, donations to the teacher’s wish list provided hundreds of dollars in classroom supplies! Earn your wings this year and join the many angels in our midst!

Attention 5th - 8th graders: New PE Uniforms

At Back to School Night, Susan Steele unveiled the new PE uniforms, which will now include an option to wear sweatpants during the cold winter months. The new PE uniforms will be available through Dennis Uniforms in the next few weeks. This will be a transition year, so both the old and new uniforms will be acceptable. Next year all 5th - 8th graders will be required to wear the new uniforms.

St. Michael's Lunches: 8th grade

Throughout the year we ask all the students to participate in St. Michael the Archangel Church’s homeless lunch program. One class weekly is designated to bring in bagged lunches, which we then deliver to St. Michaels. However, anyone who would like to participate may send an extra lunch along with their child. Suggestions for lunches would be a sandwich, soft treat, a healthy beverage, and soft piece of fruit. Sometimes a note is fun to include.

This week, the 8th graders began the year with a bang by bringing in 156 well packed lunches!  Thank you so much for the great effort that is put into packing these nutritious meals.  The lunch sacks were stuffed with big meat sandwiches, snacks, fruits and bars.  It’s important to remember that often, these sack lunches are the only meals our friends at St. Michael’s will eat on Tuesdays.  We are so excited to be back at school delivering fabulous meals to St. Michael’s.

Coaching for Character Conference

October 4th at Jesuit High School

This conference features a great lineup of motivational speakers including Bruce Brown, Alberto Salazar, and Darren Treasure. The workshop runs from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and is only $50, which includes lunch, or $25 for the morning session. This conference will be great for staff, parents, and coaches. The workshop is designed for youth coaches and parents, but is applicable to anyone who motivates young people.

The point of the conference is to address the heart of coaching- not the x's and o's or the technical side but everything in between. We hope to spend a day addressing issues like the tension between winning and formation, between talent and grit, between developing strength that doesn't bully, tensions between coaching girls versus coaching boys, and how what we teach on the field actually matters more off the field.

To register for this conference, go to www.jesuitportland.org/manresa. Full day participants can also purchase .5 semester Master's Degree credits from the University of Portland for an additional $25.00. The conference counts for 8 PDU's.
