A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

A few weeks ago we posted a survey on Survey Monkey to measure two Catholic Identity standards that are a part of our accreditation protocol. The first standard asked us if we had a mission and philosophy statement that was integrated into all aspects of school life. The second standard asked if the school maintains an active partnership with parents on the spiritual and academic education of their children.

The results of the survey were discussed with the staff, Fr. Mike, and the School Advisory Council. They are also posted outside the school office for any interested parents to review. A report was sent to the Department of Catholic Schools and it, too, is available for anyone who would like to take a look.

Based on the responses, the school staff felt that for those parents who are active in the daily life of the school, the mission and philosophy statements are an integral part of the curriculum and that parents are valued in their role as the primary educators of their children. Those who read our newsletter and handbooks, visit our website, see our mission, philosophy, and SLE documents posted in the school know we are a mission driven school. One SLE is highlighted each week for the school to focus on. Students recite the day’s SLE as a closing to lunch period. Teachers integrate the mission and SLEs in their formal observations and in their curriculum maps. Teachers regularly ask students to incorporate the SLEs in summative assessments. Finally, the SLEs are the basis of our discipline code.

One question that had a lower than average rating had to do with whether “parents and students, teachers and staff can paraphrase the mission statement, if not quote it exactly.” Well, I feel pretty confident that the teachers and students can do it, but I am not so sure about parents. To remedy this situation, a group of teachers is coming up with a “challenge” for students to teach their parents to recite the mission statement from memory. It was suggested we use social media and pattern it after the “ice bucket” challenge that was so popular this fall. If you cannot recite the mission statement, someone will dump a bucket of ice water on you and post the video on YouTube. What do you think? Who wants to go first?

We will not be publishing Footnotes next week, so I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Calling All 6th, 7th & 8th Graders!youth

Sunday, December 7th @ 7pm

It's official!  The Old Church will now be transformed on Sunday, December 7th into the new "teen room" for middle school and high school teens as part of the Madeleine Youth Ministry Program.

Come to the Parish Hall at 7pm, and we will have a work party to remove all the items in the Old Church to make way for new or donated furniture to serve the youth.  We will have a pizza party and white elephant exchange immediately following the move.  Bring a wrapped gift that can be shared and enjoyed in this fun tradition!

If anyone wishes to donate a gently used item to the new youth room, please contact Juliana at jweis@themadeleine.edu. We could also use extra space heaters!

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

Congratulations to the eighth grade for bringing in 137 nutritious lunches this week.  We so appreciate the effort of making the lunches and helping us lift, load and sort our weekly haul to St. Michael’s.  Our eighth grade students are always kind and courteous to the men and women who patiently wait in line for the dining room doors to open at St. Michael’s.  Thank you for all your help each week

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Fill a bucket, fill a bucket….everyday!

After using the Bucket-filling philosophy and books over the last few years, I can really see the effects among our Madeleine students.  When kindergarten, first, fourth and fifth grade students approach me and let me know that they are daily filling buckets…well, I feel grateful that I work here!

Gratitude fills your bucket!   However, research also shows that it is difficult, if not impossible, to feel down and blue when a person is feeling grateful. If, for any reason, your bucket should become empty, take a few moments to think about and concentrate on all you have to be grateful for.  During this season of “thanksgiving,”  ask each other, “What are you grateful for?” This habitual asking and reminding each other about gratitude can reap benefits way beyond this season.

Madeleine Career Day Set

Friday, January 23rd @ 8:30am

announce

Career Day for Madeleine students is coming to fruition and is scheduled for Friday, January 23rd from 8:30 – 11:00am.  Tina Anctil, Lynn Robinson and Carolyn Ullman have been in discussion about creating this experience for the last two years, and now Alison Anderson has agreed to help organize this event.

As you know, exposure to and discussion of the "world of work"  should start early.  We are hoping that many of you will share your careers with our students.  We are planning a four-to-five round rotation of multi-age groupings (grades 3-8).  Parents will be asked to plan a 15-20 minute, hands-on presentation about their career.  We will categorize careers by one of the multiple intelligences groupings (linguistic, mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, naturalist, interpersonal, intrapersonal and musical), although your career does not need to fit neatly into one of these categories, as most don't.

We would love to hear from you if you have a career experience that you would like to share with students.  However, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible so that we can get all of our "ducks in a row."

If you would like to volunteer or have questions, please contact Carolyn Ullman or Alison Anderson at  cullman@themadeleine.edu or aanderson@themadeleine.edu

Parents Club Meeting

Earlier this week the Madeleine Parents Club held its monthly meeting. Click here to read the meeting minutes.

The next Parents Club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2nd at 7pm in the school library.  All are welcome to attend meetings; please notify the Chair in advance if you would like time on the agenda (Alyssa Pace: alyssapace@yahoo.com).

Spaghetti Dinner Co-chairs Needed

Saturday, February 7

Parents Club is looking for two friends who want to co-chair the ever-popular Spaghetti Dinner.  Duties include marketing the event and coordinating a great group of people who have already volunteered to help set-up, clean-up and cook.  Contact Alyssa Pace at alyssapace@yahoo.com to express your interest or ask your questions.

Madeleine Peace & Justice Committee Warm Clothing Drive

The Peace & Justice Committee at The Madeleine, in an effort to help our migrant brothers and sisters, is holding a collection of warm clothing the first weekend of December.
With so much time spent working, and so little extra money, these workers often go without many of the things we take for granted. With cold and wet weather upon us, doing without can be deadly or dangerous.

If you have a few moments, please search your home for any of the items below:
• Coats and jackets
• Sweaters and sweatshirts
• Raincoats, rain pants, waterproof outer layers
• Insulating base layers, long johns, long underwear
• Warm and/or waterproof hats

Please bring your donations to the church foyer the weekend of December 6–7, where the items will be collected after each Mass.  You can also bring your donations to the School Office any time between now and Friday, December 5th.

Thanksgiving Day Mass

Please join us at 9:00 am

Take some time giving thanks, as you start your busy Thanksgiving Day. Bring the bread (or rolls) and a bottle of wine (or non-alcohol beverage) that will be used at your Thanksgiving table to be blessed during the Mass.

This also is the day we change out our Breaking Bread hymnals and take down the banners with the names of the deceased and begin to put up our Advent banners and hangings. All these tasks can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Please plan to stay and help if you can.

Thanksgiving Collection for St. Vincent de Paul

As has been customary for the last few years, the entire Thanksgiving Day Mass collection goes to support the vital works of St. Vincent de Paul. The Madeleine community has always been very generous in supporting this ministry, and we know you will be again this year.

You are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food and toiletries to Church this day and bring them forward at the time of the collection for the St. Vincent de Paul annual Food Drive.

Holiday Open House—Save the Date!

Sunday, December 7

As the holidays approach and calendars fill up, please be sure to mark the annual Parish Holiday Open House on your calendar, Sunday, December 7, 3:00–6:00 pm. Enjoy food, drink and fellowship with fellow parishioners, and school and parish faculty and staff in our Parish Rectory.

Baked goods for The Madeleine Marketplace

It’s just a few weeks until The Madeleine Marketplace! If you like to bake, please consider baking some extra of your favorites for our Bake Sale! Just bring your goodies to the Fireside Room by 10:00 am on Thursday, December 4.
