March 13, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I wanted to use this space to share an email I received on Monday morning regarding one of our CYO basketball teams. It was just delightful to read what this parent/coach had to say about our players.

Before time passes and I forget, I wanted to drop you a quick note on how great those kids, parents and coaches are. We played them this weekend in the CYO tournament, and it was simply one of the best experiences we have seen in CYO sports. During the tournament sometimes the spirit of youth sports and the meaning gets lost; parents and coaches get into it and begin trying to play through their kids. We have seen and heard some things that you simply would not expect at this level.

After the game for the first time this season every parent from our team had something positive to say about your kids, parents and coaches. Playing sport is a great way for kids to learn how to deal with adversity, and you find the true character of a person during adversity. It is a great life lesson and one I work with my kids on all the time. Everyone has a different style and way they work with kids, but what is important is how they work with the kids to make them the best people they can be.

Your group is simply the best I have witnessed to date. If I was not coaching my daughter I would have her play for your school in a heartbeat as your group shows the values that my wife and I try and teach our girls every day.  Thank you for adding the right values to kids.

I don’t even know which team he is talking about, but I was filled with pride after finishing his email. Many thanks to the coaches and parents who work so hard to teach sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect to our children.

                                                     Have a great weekend.
                                                     Susan

Field Trips and Background Checks

Field trip season is upon us and many of you are generously volunteering to chaperone. It is important to note that in order to chaperone a field trip, you must have completed all three steps of the Called to Protect program, which is the Archdiocesan child abuse prevention program. Also, please note that all three steps must be complete at least one week prior to the field trip in order to allow time for your status to be verified.

To stay active in Called to Protect you must renew your background check every three years and each year view an online video on the topic.  If you click here you will find detailed instructions on how to log on and complete this step. Give us a call in the office if you are confused about the steps you need to take to complete the Called to Protect program.

Parish Hall & Fireside Room Renovation

March 16 – April 12

Parish Hall and the Fireside Room will be receiving a “facelift” beginning on Monday.  Why now, you might ask?  This is the lowest period of use for this shared space.  In the summer, there are so many events that there is no four week window to do the work.

The renovations will include:

Anticipated Schedule of Work:

Things to know:

As with any major home renovation project, timelines are subject to change and flexibility is key.  Things may get delayed or changed at last minute, so the patience of everyone involved is greatly appreciated.  Be on the lookout for updates in Friday Footnotes as well as email blasts.  If you have any questions during the renovation, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Want YDP Summer Camp? Let Us Know!

There has been some interest in extending our summer YDP program a for a few more weeks until August 21st. Ms. Savery is open to the suggestion, but she needs to know FOR SURE that there is enough interest to support the program.

The proposed dates are June 15th through August 21st. We would be closed July 2nd and 3rd for the Fourth of July holiday and July 30th and 31st for the annual Haitian Garage Sale. Otherwise it would be business as usual, 5 days a week, from 8:00 until 6:00.

If you think you would be interested in enrolling your child/children, please give it some attention and take a look at your calendar. Details on weekly themes and activities will be forthcoming. Talk to Ms. Savery for more details and let her know what weeks you might be interested in. A final decision to offer the program will depend on participation.

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

A big thank you to our fifth graders for bringing in 133 sandwiches this week. Even with the warm weather we’ve been having, there are still many folks waiting in line at St. Michael’s on these brisk mornings.  Thanks so much for your support; having a full belly feels great in any weather.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

March 15 ~ Fourth Sunday in Lent ~ John 3:14-21

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In today’s reading from the Gospel of John, we hear Jesus telling Nicodemus, who is a Pharisee, that the “Son of Man” (Jesus) must be lifted up so that all who believe in Jesus will have eternal life. Jesus says God loves us so much that He gave us Jesus -- and that if we believe in Him, we will be saved. Jesus, who is the light, came into the world. Those who do evil work, hate the light, and do not come toward it. But those who live the truth, come to Jesus, and their actions are reflections of God.

God’s love for us is huge! How can you respond to such love? What can you do to show God your thanks for his great gift?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Habitat for Humanity: warmer days make the work wonderful!

Help needed April 1, April 11, April 15 and April 18

If you’ve been holding off volunteering for Habitat for Humanity because of the cold, wintry weather, take heart. Spring is nearly here and there are new opportunities for you to join with other volunteers from the Madeleine who are busy building a new home for the Sebastian-Pascual family.
The foundation, floors, walls and roof are in place, but there’s still much to do before the house is finished.
Volunteers from the Madeleine are needed for Wednesday April 1, Saturday April 11, Wednesday April 15 and Saturday April 18. If this will be your first time volunteering, relax. You do not need to be a carpenter or painter or have any building experience. There are trained instructors and tools and safety equipment are provided.
To volunteer on any or all of those days, please e-mail the Madeleine’s Volunteer Coordinators, Mark and Susan Miller, hoosiersusan2@gmail.com or call 503-708-7395.
Days are getting longer, the weather warmer, so please consider joining other Madeleine parishioners in this interfaith project for Habitat for Humanity.

This year, we’re holding our Lenten Communal Reconciliation on Sunday after Mass in the hope that all parishioners will be able to attend. We will have additional priests available to hear your confessions.

Take time this week to prepare for Reconciliation by inviting the Holy Spirit to help you to examine your conscience. Look to the past and reflect on the wrongs you have done. Look to the present and think of the bad habits you wish to break. Look to the future to see how you wish to grow closer to God and others.
Please join us in this celebration of God’s mercy.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
