A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our new hot lunch program is coming together with the recent hire of Nora Balsz, as the kitchen manager, cook, and probably chief bottle washer! Nora has been part of the parish staff as the event manager for the past few months.  She also brings a wealth of experience in school food service because she ran the lunch program at Archbishop Howard for many years. She expects that she can have the kitchen ready to go in mid to late October with online menus, ordering, and paying capabilities.  As I mentioned at Back to School night, Parents Club will still do lunch on Thursdays so volunteers will be needed.

Thursdays are also our school Mass day. This year we are making a change for the first Thursday of the month Mass. We will be attending by grade levels so that the Mass will be more tailored to that age group. For example, right now our middle school students sit in the back of the church. When they have a middle school Mass, they will be able to be closer to the altar and the homily will be geared to their cognitive, emotional, and social development. When our primary children attend, we can choose music and readings that speak to their spiritual understandings. The classes that are not participating in Mass that week will use that time for their classroom religion curriculum.  Since this is a new venture, we will evaluate the plan to see if our goals are being achieved and if the change is working.

Have a great weekend. I will be with my family harvesting grapes so I hope the sun shines, the birds don’t show up, and the yellow jackets are not too aggressive. Whatever your plans, enjoy!

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Blessing of the Animals

Thursday, October 2nd at 2:50pm

Bring your pet(s) or a picture of your pet(s) for a blessing as part of Madeleine School's celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi!

We will gather at the turn around driveway (in between the rectory and the gym entrance) at 2:50pm.

To ensure the safety of everyone gathered, as well as the safety of everyone’s pets, dogs need to be on leashes and other pets should be brought using appropriate means (cages, travel carriers etc.).  Dogs that do not enjoy the company of other dogs should be left at home.

Pre-K Update

Just a quick update on the progress of the Pre-K initiative. Once it was determined that opening a Pre-K this fall was not feasible, the committee took a wider-ranging view of the program and is exploring a wide variety of options. We will post news as we have it.

Get ready!

Kids Kreations News

Your kids have been creating up a storm making the original art for the Kids Kreations note cards, which will be available to order as part of our Auction.

Breaking with tradition, this year, instead of sticking to the auction theme for their cards, I simply selected a variety of subjects I thought would make great greeting cards you will love to send to all your special people. Look for Seahorses, Light houses and Windmills, Shattered Rainbows, Four Seasons of Trees, Carousel Horses, NW Landscapes, Great Grapes (perfect for invites to a wine and cheese party or First Eucharist celebration) Pop Art Coffee and Tea Cups, and Folk Art inspired Suns and Moons. With so many fun subjects, you'll be tempted to order designs that someone else's kids made, too!

Watch the bulletin board near the office for a sneak preview of the art, and tune into Friday Footnotes for ordering information. Let's make this the year handwritten notes make a comeback.

Regards,
Mrs. Galash

Coaching for Character Conference

October 4th at Jesuit High School

This conference features a great lineup of motivational speakers including Bruce Brown, Alberto Salazar, and Darren Treasure. The workshop runs from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and is only $50, which includes lunch, or $25 for the morning session. This conference will be great for staff, parents, and coaches. The workshop is designed for youth coaches and parents, but is applicable to anyone who motivates young people.

The point of the conference is to address the heart of coaching- not the x's and o's or the technical side but everything in between. We hope to spend a day addressing issues like the tension between winning and formation, between talent and grit, between developing strength that doesn't bully, tensions between coaching girls versus coaching boys, and how what we teach on the field actually matters more off the field.

To register for this conference, go to www.jesuitportland.org/manresa. Full day participants can also purchase .5 semester Master's Degree credits from the University of Portland for an additional $25.00. The conference counts for 8 PDU's.

Parish seeking new members for Pastoral Council

The Madeleine Parish is looking to our community for two new members of our Pastoral Council, a new Chairperson and a new Vice Chairperson.

Pastoral Council serves in an advisory role to the Pastor on issues of parish pastoral planning. It is responsible for the ongoing process of developing and renewing long- and short-range priorities for pastoral ministry. Through a process of discernment and consensus, the Pastoral Council offers recommendations to the Pastor regarding pastoral planning.

The Chairperson’s responsibilities are to chair and call all Council meetings, prepare and supervise the election of Council members, prepare an agenda for each meeting, and coordinate with the Pastor regarding the agenda and Pastoral Council needs.

The Vice-Chairperson assumes the responsibilities of the Chairperson in her/his absence.

Eligibility

All parishioners who have received the sacrament of Confirmation, are not parish or school staff, and who are at least 15 years of age are eligible to be elected to the Pastoral Council.

A strong Pastoral Council is vital to the operation and outreach of our parish. If you are interested in being considered, please contact Father Mike, 503-281-5777, or fathermike@themadeleine.edu.

Help us build a Habitat home!

habitat for humanitySoon we will take hammer to nail and begin work on a Habitat for Humanity home for the Sebastian-Pascual family. Ricardo and Micaela immigrated from Guatemala 17 years ago, and have three children. Next Spring they will move into their home in a development called Trillium Court, 6875 S. W. Capitol Hill Road, Portland. The Madeleine will be joining other faith communities in volunteering time and talent to this inter-faith build.

Volunteer opportunities for interested parishioners 16 years and older will begin in approximately early November. If you want to volunteer on the construction site and have not already signed our roster, please contact Susan Miller, Volunteer Coordinator, hoosiersusan2@gmail.com, 503-708-7395. Susan will communicate with all prospective volunteers as we formalize plans.

For those interested in serving in a different way, we have the following leadership positions open:

Hospitality Coordinator

Coordinates the donation and serving of a simple lunch and beverages for volunteers on the construction site.

Communications Coordinator

Communicates the progress of the house construction through bulletin submissions, pulpit announcements, and church web site updates.

Photographer

Takes and collects photos chronicling the house build at all phases of construction. Works with Communications Coordinator in creation of a storyboard.

If you are interested in serving in any one of these leadership positions, please contact Co-Chairs Jim Laubenthal (laubenthaljim@gmail.com, 503-287-9144) or Darlene Maurer (darlene.maurer@frontier.com, 503-629-8541).
