A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday I received two communications in the mail thanking the Madeleine School (really its students) for their financial support of their respective missions. The Heifer Project is an organization that uses its donations to buy farm animals for families in developing countries. The purpose, of course, is to help them become more self-sufficient. Families who receive animals must promise to give any future animal offspring to other families in need. You can find more information on this organization at their website http://www.heifer.org/.

We also helped an organization called Operation Smile. This group focuses on children suffering from cleft lips or cleft palates who do not have adequate medical services available in their home countries. Our Student Government organized both fundraisers, and they did a wonderful job. I know both groups are very grateful to the Madeleine community.

On another note…..Calling all Amazon shoppers (and you know who you are). Please see the blurb below to learn how you can turn your online shopping habits into cash for The Madeleine School. Thanks to Jonas Allen, our next Parents Club President, for setting up this new fundraising option. By the way, Jonas is seeking a VP to help him with next year’s activities and programs. If you feel like you might be able to help, contact him directly at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com.

              Have a good weekend.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, you’ve probably been browsing Amazon. Starting today, a new Madeleine Parents Club program will donate a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

Middle School Tech Night

June 1st @ 7pm in Parish Hall

All incoming and present Middle School parents, please add Monday, June 1st to your calendar.

The Middle School Teaching Team will review how our Chromebook pilot worked this past year and how we plan to move forward with our technology plan. We are excited to share what we have found and answer any questions as we all begin to prepare for the next school year. Join us at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall.

Parents Club: Calling All K-2 Parents!

There’s just one position left on the Madeleine Parents Club for 2015-16, and it has “Kindergarten, First or Second-Grade parent” written all over it! The Parents Club is looking for a Vice President to work alongside the President, to support other Executive Committee members, and to help coordinate the back-to-school BBQ.

In years past we’ve leaned heavily on middle-school parents for the Executive Committee. We’d like to avoid that gap in tribal knowledge by having next year’s VP be a parent from the Kindergarten through Second Grade classes. With that said, “all are welcome” in Parents Club, so any parent looking for a way to engage in the School’s various FUNdraising efforts is welcome to fill the VP role.

Please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com if you're interested in learning more about the VP position.

It’s time for the Summer Reading challenge!

This is a great way to keep the reading going over the summer months. Track your minutes from May 4 - Sept 4 and log them at www.scholastic.com/summer to be earned for our school.  The older kids will be given log in and password information at school and the younger kids will be bringing this information home in Friday folders soon.  Start tracking now and you can enter up to two weeks at one time.

Prizes will be given to our readers in the fall when we return to school.  The past two years our school has come in second in Oregon for reading minutes...will this be our year to take the top spot?

2014 Annual Fund Report Corrections

We strive for perfection when creating the Annual Fund Report, but don’t always achieve it. Regretfully, two of our faculty members -- Ida Galash and Tina Hanselman -- were inadvertently left off the list of faculty donors. We apologize, and have corrected the error in the link below:

You can click here to read the 2014 Annual Fund Report.

We recently passed the mid-point of our 2015 Annual Fund Campaign. If you would like to contribute this year, but haven't done so yet, you can click here to go to our giving page or drop off your donation in the front office.

Thank you for stepping up!

Many, many thanks to Tiffany and Reid Cooper who have stepped up to organize and deliver St. Michael lunches next year.

As you know, this is one of our key school-wide service projects, so we are very grateful to the Cooper family. This is a tremendous volunteer job requiring a weekly commitment every Tuesday morning and more than a few muscles to deliver up to 400 lunches to St. Michael’s in downtown Portland. Be sure to thank them personally the next time you see Tiffany or Reid.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

A big thank you to the sixth grade for bringing in 82 lunches today.  As we wind down the school year, it gets harder and harder to remember St. Michael’s lunches, and we really appreciate the extra effort families take to make sure we have lunches through May 26th, which is our last day.

Tiffany and Reid Cooper have generously agreed to step up and take over the delivery of St. Michael’s next year. We are very grateful to your family for taking on this volunteer position.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

May 17 ~ Ascension of the Lord ~

Mark 16:15-20

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and tell everyone what I have taught you. (Proclaim the gospel) All who believe and are baptized will be saved. Those who will not believe will be condemned. After Jesus talked to the disciples he was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. The disciples went out and preached everywhere and the Holy Spirit worked with them and made them strong.

How can you spread the gospel? Will you spread the gospel?

Jim Francesconi Speaks to Middle School Students & 7th Grader, Michael H., Responds

Earlier this month, the middle schoolers finished their speaker series on the topic of Vocational Discipleship. Hannah Callahan, from Fair Housing of Oregon, spoke in February. Rob Justus, founder of JOIN, participated in March. Jim Francesconi, former city commissioner, concluded the series earlier this month. They all spoke about how their faith and Catholic values led them to making a positive difference in our local community.

Below is Michael's response to Mr. Francesconi's presentation:

Jim Francesconi came to our school and talked about his career, personal, and spiritual life. He made me think about how important family is, and how I should savor the relationships with my family. It helped me realize how lucky I am and that God will guide me in whatever I do. I was impressed with some of the high ranking jobs he has had, like City Commissioner.

What really stood out for me was how his life hasn’t been perfect. How there were bumps in the road like losing the mayoral race, but through it all how he remained committed to helping the community. What I found meaningful was his discussion on how to balance real life with spiritual life. He said that these aren’t two separate things, and that God speaks through people to make a difference in the real world.

I will always remember him as someone who is intelligent, spiritual, and connected to the community, his family, and God. Thank you for speaking to us!
