A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I have good news to share. Last night’s meeting with the third grade class was very successful, not only because four generous parents stepped forward to chair next year’s auction, but also because there was such positive energy, great ideas, and lively enthusiasm for the task ahead.

So our new chairs are …..(drum roll, please) Jim Jones, Alyssa Pace, Kristin Rios, and Jeff Robertson. They have already been talking about themes, venues, and catering, etc. so we are really in a good place with planning. Many thanks to the sub-chairs who volunteered to stay on for another year. This is a tremendous help to the overall execution of the auction. We are truly blessed to have such capable, generous people in our school community. Stay tuned for more auction information in the next few weeks.

Speaking of generous people, we had a wonderful Career Day today due to the parents who volunteered to spend this morning telling our students about their professional lives.  Details about the event are in today’s newsletter. Special thanks to Carolyn Ullman, Alison Anderson, Tina Anctil, and Lynn Robinson for their work in bringing this idea to fruition. Ask your child about the sessions he/she attended.

Next week is Catholic Schools Week, and a schedule of activities is in today’s newsletter. I want to especially invite all of our students and parents to the 10:00 Mass on Sunday to celebrate Catholic education. Please have your child wear his/her uniform and gather in the back of the church. We will process in behind our class banners and then children will sit with their families. Hope to see you on Sunday.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Catholic Schools Week

January 25th - 30th

There are lots of fun activities going on all week long. From a procession by class at Mass on Sunday to Free Dress and a Friendship Family activity on Tuesday to a Pennies for the Poor competition going on all week, there's a little something for everyone to enjoy!

Sunday: Pastor and Seminarian Appreciation Day

This Sunday is the kickoff for Catholic Schools Week. The 2015 theme is "Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service." Students in uniform will process in behind class banners at the beginning of the 10am Mass.

Monday: Staff Appreciation Day

We are honoring our teachers with a special luncheon, and it would be great if they could all eat together and have a bit longer lunch break. If you are available from 11:45 - 12:45 to help supervise students while the teachers eat lunch, please give Susan Steele a call or email.

Tuesday: Student Appreciation Day

All students are invited to come to school in free dress.

Wednesday: Volunteer Appreciation Day

We invite all our volunteers to have lunch with us. The menu will be chicken tacos plus salad bar. If you are available to eat lunch with your child and be honored for your generosity to our school community, please RSVP to Susan Steele, so that we know how much food to prepare. By the way, K-2 eat lunch at 11:30, 3-5 eat at 11:50, and 6-8 eat at 12:10. Hope you can join us.

Thursday: Parent Appreciation Day

Please join us for coffee and donuts in the Garden Room during drop-off.

Friday: Staff Faith Formation Day

No school for students!

All Week: Pennies for the Poor

During Catholic Schools week Madeleine School is participating in “Pennies for the Poor” fundraiser.

Each class will have a milk jug to fill with change. Pennies and paper are positive and silver change is a negative point for your class, so place your coins strategically! All of the money raised will go to St. Andre Bassette homeless ministry, formerly known as the Downtown Chapel.

Look for the jugs outside the office during Catholic Schools week, and start collecting your pennies!

A poem written by The Madeleine School Student Government:

We’ve crested the wave 2014 has presented.
The Madeleine School’s values,
well represented.
Each day dawns with a prayer and a hope
We follow the lead of Francis, our Pope.
Not only do fingers rest on worn pages,
Our technology has progressed through the ages,
Chromebook screens cast a lovely glow,
On faces of students, eager to know.
There’s many people in need,
our call is to serve,
we’ll stick to our creed;
God’s children deserve.

News From the Art Roomart

The art room has been a blizzard of activity.  Last Thursday I had the privilege of hosting a gathering of art teachers from other schools in the Archdiocese, and they enjoyed seeing your children's creations.

If you haven't wandered down the hallway by the art room lately, you are missing out.  We've got our own version of Frozen playing on the walls with 2nd grade Snowmen on their own hand-printed Suminagashi paper (Japanese marbling,) 3rd grade Dream Snowmen with a fun re-purposing twist, 4th grade Snowflake Banners, and 5th and 7th with unique versions of frozen landscapes and the Aurora Borealis.

Plus you can get a sneak peek at the beautiful Poetry Box and the post that 8th grade is working on.  Hurry - these will soon give way to a flurry of Valentines and Mardi Gras Masks just in time for the big celebration next month.

And remember, the Portland Art Museum has FREE general admission every fourth Friday evening - That's tonight!

Because Art Matters,
Mrs. Galash

Updated notice from the IRS

NOTE: The past weeks,we have posted information from the IRS regarding IP-PIN numbers required during filing of Federal Income Tax for anyone who has had a background check run through the Archdiocese in past years. We received this updated information this week. Thank you.

The Archdiocese has just learned that the IRS is delayed in issuing IP-PINs. Thus, you may not receive an IP-PIN during this tax season, even though you had a background check performed in connection with service for the Archdiocese, a parish or school. The IRS will continue to issue IP-PINs on a rolling basis. If you have received an IP-PIN, you must use it to file your taxes. If you have not received an IP-PIN, IRS advises that the best way to protect yourself is to file your taxes early. IRS apologizes for the delays and the confusion it has caused.

The FAQs posted in the Archdiocese’s website are being revised accordingly.

If you have questions, please contact the IRS Identity Protection Special Unit at 1-800-908-4490 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Please do not contact the Archdiocese or your parish or school. Neither the Archdiocese nor your parish or school has any further information on the issuance of IP-PINs.

Check Out Madeleine Morning News

New and Improved

Madeleine Morning News, our in-house weekly news program, is new and improved!  It now features a green screen studio, which has proven very popular with the students.

Sixth grade will typically have it recorded and edited so it will be ready for classes to watch on Friday. The show runs 3-5 minutes, and we will be adding new features as our team masters the technology.

(Re)Introducing Madeleine’s Box Top Program with a Class Competition

During the month of February, the Parents Club is hosting a friendly competition to see which class can bring in the most BoxTops.  The winning class will be treated to a donut party!

All you need to do is drop a Ziploc bag, full of BoxTops, marked with your grade in the white bin under the gym stairs.  At the end of the month, the Parents Club will count and tally to determine the winning class.

Want an easy way to get your volunteer hours from home?  Step up and volunteer to manage the Madeleine BoxTops Program.  The time commitment is about one hour per week, and you can do it from home!  Previous volunteers in this position have said that it is an easy job, but that you have to be detail oriented.

Contact Alyssa Pace, Parents Club President, at alyssapace@yahoo.com and let her know you are willing to count and sort labels.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate strengths in how children and adults process and understand information.

I will be highlighting each of the multiple intelligences in the next few Friday Footnotes.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The second grade brought in 274 sweetly marked lunches this week; that’s enough to feed our friends at St Michael’s for a few days!  Great work second graders, we so appreciate your dedication and hard work to feed the hungry in Portland.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

January 25 ~ Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 1:14-20

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now be included each week in Friday Footnotes.

Jesus said to Simon and Andrew, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The two brothers followed Jesus, as well as James and John, who were also fishermen.

What do you think it means to “fish for people?”

How can we “fish” for people?

What kind of “bait” would you use to fish for people?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Yes, they’re finally here...the (very) long-awaited 2014 Parish Directories. We apologize for the excessively long delay, but hope that the final product is worth waiting for!

If you DID have your photo taken:

If you did NOT have your photo taken

A number of directories will be available to those who did not have their photos taken for the directory. They will be made available at the Parish Office during business hours.

Questions? Contact Rich Hammons at rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Children’s Liturgy Of The Word—adult leaders needed!

We are in need of a few more catechists for our Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) program. CLW is the pull-out program for kids during 10 am Mass on Sundays. We need additional teachers for both groups: the pre-K/K group, and the 1st-5th grade group. At this time we are looking specifically for adults or one teen/one adult working together.
Teaching CLW is an easy and fun way to get involved with our parish community and earn service hours as well. We provide all the materials needed. The commitment is approximately one Sunday every five weeks. If you would like to get involved, please contact Becky: bmoore@themadeleine.edu or 503-281-5777 x27.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!

If you have information to contribute to the Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
