A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Each year I must submit a letter to our Archbishop to indicate that The Madeleine School is in compliance with the guidelines of the Child Protection Policy. This policy governs our volunteer program and was instituted by the Archdiocese to protect all our children, both in our schools and at parish activities. Each year at our Back to School Night in September I review the steps necessary to volunteer in our school (working in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, etc.) and a glazed look seems to come over the audience.  I know this is not the most interesting topic, and the yearly procedures to stay active as a volunteer can be easily forgotten. That is why the school office is happy to check your status if you plan on volunteering.

The letter I referred to earlier is being mailed next week. One of the things I must report on is the number of volunteers who are not in compliance with the guidelines. I will be “de-activating” volunteers from our database next week. The number one reason that people will be removed from active status is that they have not gone online to view the yearly video pertaining to child abuse. This video changes each year, and the one for this year is Duty To Protect. If you have forgotten how to access this video, please click here for the link to find it.

One final clarification…..if you are a new family you must begin the whole volunteer process with 3 things: a background check (good for 3 years), attendance at a Called To Protect training (call the office for the next scheduled training), and signing off on the Standards of Conduct policy (found online.) The yearly online videos begin after your first year of volunteering…….See what I mean about the glazed look???

Call the office with questions. We are happy to provide answers.

On another topic…..Check out our Auction 2015 theme below in the newsletter. It is going to be such fun. What am I going to wear?

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Hip, Hip Hooray for Kelsi Charlesworth, Shelby Walker & the Jogathon Volunteers!

There was a buzz in the air as the students eagerly awaited the start of the Jogathon.  Jogathon shirts and tennis shoes were spotted throughout the school. All of this was made possible by Kelsi Charlesworth, Shelby Walker and their volunteers who coordinated this eagerly anticipated day, which is also the second largest fundraiser of the year.

Thank you again for organizing such a great event in which the entire Madeleine community gets to participate!

Exciting Updates in the Computer Lab

Last week we brought the first 15 Chromebases into the computer lab to replace the 9 year old Dell computers that can no longer be updated.

The new machines are an all-in-one desktop that runs on Chrome OS and gives all our students instant access to their suite of Google Apps. They are very fast to login and will give all the students a much more user friendly experience, as well as make possible for them to develop and strengthen their digital literacy skills for success in today’s world, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration.

LG is currently overwhelmed by the huge volume of Chromebases being ordered, so the final 15 are currently backordered but should be coming in soon!

Book Fair Raises $3,000 to buy new books for Madeleine

The success of the Book Fair earned our school $3000 in credit to buy new books for our library and classrooms!  This is one source of funds to replenish the library with new reading material and keep our students excited and motivated to read.

We also raised $377 for Portland Children's Book Bank.  This will provide 91 new books into households that otherwise would not be able to buy books for their children.

Thank you to everyone who worked at and who shopped this Spring's Book Fair!

Help Wanted: Parents Club Executive Committee

Only a few positions remain on the 2015-16 Madeleine Parents' Club Executive Committee, and we're looking for a few energetic souls to join the team!

The Parents' Club has two primary goals: managing the various fundraisers that help keep our tuition as low as possible, and building a sense of community among the great families here at The Madeleine.

If you're able to contribute, or if you'd like to recommend someone, we'd love to hear from you about filling one of these four remaining positions:

Vice President: Works alongside the President to support other Executive Committee members and coordinate the back-to-school BBQ. Note: The VP has a Golden Ticket to the President's chair the following year -- this isn't a one-and-done appearance.

Secretary: Records and distributes notes from the monthly Parents' Club meetings.

Hot Lunch Coordinator: Coordinates all Parents' Club Hot Lunch Thursdays, works with outside vendors (Freshii, Subway, etc.), and recruits and appoints hot lunch Lead Supervisors.

Fundraising Coordinator: A brand-new Parents' Club position, this person is charged with identifying, vetting and coordinating solicitations for "Dining For Dollars" dinners out, as well as other new fundraising opportunities as they arise.

If you're interested in any of these positions or know someone who might be a good fit, Parents' Club wants to hear from you! Please email next year's President, Jonas Allen, at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com with any questions, recommendations, or to express your own interest in joining the team. Operators are standing by.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

While there is so much pressure for some students to “make As” or honor roll status, I see discouragement and sadness when expectations become unreasonable and failure is seen as unacceptable.  Failures are important because they teach us what needs to change.  You are not your grades or test scores.  There are so many important things that tests can’t measure.

Especially at this time of year when testing is ramping up, children everywhere deserve to know—YOU ARE NOT YOUR GRADES.  You are so much more.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

Congratulations to the eighth grade for bringing in 178 lunches this week.  This is their last St. Michael’s lunch packing day, and I so appreciate the effort.  I’d also like to thank the eighth graders for helping Louise Hallman and me haul all these lunches down to St. Michael’s this year.  This eighth grade class has been great fun to work with and our students always receive many compliments in the halls of St. Michael’s.

One final note... Louise and I are graduating our last Madeleine students this year and we need to find replacements.  If you’re interested in taking the reins, please contact Susan Steele.  It’s best to share this job with another person.  The hours are Tuesdays from 8:15-9:30 am.  You need a large-ish vehicle, or one that can carry up to 400 lunches to St. Michael’s in downtown Portland. And finally, you need to submit a weekly write-up to Friday Footnotes.  It’s a really fun way to stay connected to the Madeleine community and get to know the eighth grade class.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

May 3 ~ Fifth Sunday of Easter ~

John 15:1-8

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

Talking to his disciples Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.” (A grower is another name for a farmer. A farmer removes branches that do not produce good fruit.) Jesus said, “Remain in me, as I remain in you.” (Stay connected to me and I will be connected to you.)

Jesus goes on to say that with him we will bear much fruit. Without him we will bear nothing. “Stay connected to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then pray for what you want and God will answer. When you bear good fruit my Father will be honored.”

If we keep Jesus close to us what will happen? Why does Jesus tell us to stay connected to Him?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.
