A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Thursday we hosted a visitation day for the new students who will be joining our community next September. The majority of them were rising kinders (4 and 5 year olds) who were quite excited and a bit nervous about the visit. Mrs. Schneider, who is an old hand at this, brought her class in and each visitor was assigned to a “Kinder buddy.” Their responsibility was to show the children the kindergarten classroom and explain what magical things happen there. Likewise, we entertained the new parents by telling them about magical things such as our annual auction, the jogathon, scrip, volunteer hours, hot lunch, etc. I am not sure who had more questions, the new students or the new parents. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped with hospitality and answering questions. Their advice and expertise was so welcome as our new families look forward to the coming school year.

Speaking of next year…… Please take a look in your child’s Friday Folder for a large manila envelope. Mrs. Rosebrook is sending home the “summer packet” with more forms to fill out than should be allowed, but each very important to the operation of the school. I think you are going to need all three days of the coming weekend to complete them! That is a slight exaggeration, but there is some truth to it. However, please have pity on Angela who has to sort and record all the information. Please, please, please, take some time and fill out the forms and return them as soon as possible.  I don’t want Angela to be here until July processing. Let me offer an incentive that seemed to work last year. The first 20 people who put their entire completed (no missing forms) packet in Angela’s hands will get a little gift card to Starbucks. Thanks so much for your prompt response.

I hope you have a nice, relaxing Memorial Day weekend planned. And that the sun comes out.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Spring musical, "Bye Bye Conrad and Birdie", a huge hit. Thank you Ms. Bjore!

After months of practice, practice, practice, "Bye Bye Conrad and Birdie" played for two nights to a sell-out crowd on the Alameda Cafeteria Stage. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders did a fabulous job bringing this 60's musical to life. Not only did they act the parts, the students painted the props, worked the scene changes, curtains, and helped each other with make-up and costumes backstage.

Ms. Bjore was their fearless leader and director. In addition to teaching music to grades K-8 this year, she has also lead several extra-curricular activities including choir, a strings ensemble, and play practice every Sunday night. Thank you Ms. Bjore for going above and beyond. You are a saint!

Thank you also to everyone who came out to watch the play and support our students. CLICK HERE for more photos from the musical.

Join the Bridge Program!

Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year.  The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.  In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

Parents Club: Calling All K-2 Parents!

There’s just one position left on the Madeleine Parents Club for 2015-16, and it has “Kindergarten, First or Second-Grade parent” written all over it! The Parents Club is looking for a Vice President to work alongside the President, to support other Executive Committee members, and to help coordinate the back-to-school BBQ.

In years past we’ve leaned heavily on middle-school parents for the Executive Committee. We’d like to avoid that gap in tribal knowledge by having next year’s VP be a parent from the Kindergarten through Second Grade classes. With that said, “all are welcome” in Parents Club, so any parent looking for a way to engage in the School’s various FUNdraising efforts is welcome to fill the VP role.

Please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com if you're interested in learning more about the VP position.

It’s time for the Summer Reading challenge!

The Summer Reading program is well under way.  The younger grades have user names and passwords coming home in Friday Folders.  All students can record their minutes from May 4- September 4th.  It's a fun way to stay motivated to read over the summer and avoid the "summer slide."

The past two years The Madeleine has been second in the state for reading minutes.  Lets see what we can do this summer!

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

A big thank you to the fifth grade for bringing in164 lunches this week.  The Madeleine has done a wonderful job of contributing to the St. Michael’s lunch program this year and the staff and volunteers as well as the guests are truly grateful.  Every lunch helps someone.  Just a few more weeks left before we sign off for the summer, let’s bring it home strong!

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

AMAZONIf you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, you’ve probably been browsing Amazon. Starting today, a new Madeleine Parents Club program will donate a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

May 24 ~ Pentecost ~ John 20:19-23

In this Sundays’ gospel passage, we hear that the disciples are all together in one room, the doors locked, and they are afraid. Jesus comes and stands in the room with them. “Peace be with you.” He breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The disciples are not afraid and go outside with Jesus.

Can you call on this gift of the Holy Spirit when you need strength in your life? How? What times in your life could you have asked for strength and didn’t?

Summer Camps

At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

Send us your 2015 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of Class of 2015 high school graduates from The Madeleine in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduate’s name by June 7 so we may list them in our June 14 bulletin.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!

If you have information to contribute to the Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
