April 2, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had a beautiful all school Seder Meal this afternoon. A big thank you to Ms. Bjore and Mrs. Rosebrook for organizing the meal and to our wonderful 8th grade leaders who led their family groups in prayer.

We have enjoyed having the students in school during Holy Week, so that we could gather the students in prayer during these holy days.

Don't forget the Paschal Tridium begins tonight with Holy Thursday, continues with Good Friday and concludes Saturday with Easter Vigil.  Please make a point of joining in the celebration of Holy Week.

Holy Thursday, April 2 @ 7pm

Good Friday, April 3 @ 7pm

Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 4 @ 8:30 pm (followed by a reception in the Fireside Room). NOTE: There will be NO 5:00 pm Saturday Mass.

Easter Sunday, April 5
8:00 am—Mass ~ 10:00 am—Mass, followed by an Easter Egg hunt for children and refreshments for all.

May you have a blessed Easter.

                                                               Susan

Parish Hall & Fireside Room Renovation

Ongoing through April 12

As you may have noticed, we are replacing the carpeting in the parish hall and fireside room this week and part of next and appreciate your patience through this process.

What you may not know, is that our carpet has been awarded the honor of Irvington Historic District legacy flooring by the Interior Design Society of NE Portland and their counterparts in the City of Portland Bureau of Buildings.

Madsen (a.k.a. Mads), will be the guest of honor at a recognition dinner of the Irvington Historic District in the near future. Please congratulate Mads if you happen to see him lying about the campus.

Anticipated Schedule of Upcoming Work:

If you have any questions during the renovation, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 1

May 1st is the big day when students will be running and walking laps for our school for the 2015 Jogathon!  A kick-off assembly was held on Monday. This year we have a wide range of fantastic prizes!  A week of summer camp at Steve & Kate’s and Fit Bits will be awarded to our top fundraisers depending on the age group. Plus, any student who raises at least $150 will have their name entered into a random drawing to win a $250 gift certificate to a local bike shop or 3 days of summer camp at Steve & Kate’s. Other great prizes include a party for 30 of your friends at VoiceBox and field time at Rose City Futsal.

Once again we have Blazer tickets this year. The game is on Saturday, April 11 when they take on the Utah Jazz, and this year it includes a special opportunity. Following the game each student will have a chance to go down to the court and shoot free throws. Plus, each student will receive a $5 voucher for the concession stand. Anyone with at least $100 in paid pledges or 10 per lap pledges will be entered into the drawing. The deadline to get into the Blazer ticket drawing is Sunday, April 5th.

In addition, we have great weekly prize incentives!  This week’s challenge: Anyone who receives a new pledge this week will be entered into a prize drawing (up to 10 students will receive a prize).

Playground Update

As you may have noticed, five mats have arrived and been placed on the playground and the caution tape removed.

The 4' x 6' beveled mats were placed primarily in the fall areas for safety. Each mat weighs about 150 pounds, so while it's not likely that they will move much, we will keep an eye on them for shifting.

The entire playground is now usable again.  Efforts are ongoing for the permanent repair of the playground surface.

Two Ways to Get Volunteer Hours

Do you need some volunteer hours before the year ends? Here are two options for you:

1) Help with the creation of our online Art Museum by photographing each class's artwork and uploading it to our new account on Artsonia.com. You will only need a few minutes of training- it's very easy. Contact Alison Anderson at aanderson@themadeleine.edu to volunteer.

2) Volunteer from home by mounting artwork for our upcoming Art Show.  Contact Mrs. Galash at igalash@themadeleine.edu to volunteer.

Want YDP Summer Camp? Let Us Know!

There has been some interest in extending our summer YDP program a for a few more weeks until August 21st. Ms. Savery is open to the suggestion, but she needs to know FOR SURE that there is enough interest to support the program.

The proposed dates are June 15th through August 21st. We would be closed July 2nd and 3rd for the Fourth of July holiday and July 30th and 31st for the annual Haitian Garage Sale. Otherwise it would be business as usual, 5 days a week, from 8:00 until 6:00.

If you think you would be interested in enrolling your child/children, please give it some attention and take a look at your calendar. Details on weekly themes and activities will be forthcoming. Talk to Ms. Savery for more details and let her know what weeks you might be interested in. A final decision to offer the program will depend on participation.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

This is my final article to highlight all eight multiple intelligences.  Every person is capable of developing any one of these intelligences and we should be encouraging kids to do so.  Exposure is the key.  Expose students to the vast range of opportunities in their environment and in the community.  In doing this, you are providing your student to develop a well-rounded approach to the world of work and play.

7th Grade Visits Medical Teams International's REAL LIFE Exhibit

On Tuesday the 7th grade class went to the Medical Teams International's REAL LIFE exhibit. The exhibit consists of six rooms which are set up as replicas of disasters sites where Medical Teams International provides relief. Examples include Haiti, Uganda, Guatemala, Indonesia, Moldova, Philippines, Mozambique, and Mexico. Each student was deeply moved with concern for the immense needs of people in our global community. They are also left humbled, grateful, and hopeful that they can do something to help people in crisis. Stay tuned...

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The third grade brought in 248 well packed lunches this week.  That’s quite an impressive number considering most parents are still in the blissful fog of spring break. A big thank you to all the students and parents who are setting the bar so high for these last months of school.  Though the days have more light, the weather is often wet and cool, and a great lunch helps to keep the chills away.
