April 10, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Susan is soaking up some sunshine in Florida (aka attending a conference), so I am filling in as her guest columnist.

I know if she was here she would want to draw your attention to some really fun events coming up at school, so without further ado . . . grab your calendar and make sure these events are on it!

April 14: Take a night off from cooking by attending our Dining Night Out at McMenamins on Broadway from 5pm - close. They will donate 50% of sales to The Madeleine School's Outdoor School Fund.

April 19: Celebrate Earth Day by recycling your e-waste right here at Madeleine from 9am - 1pm in the circular driveway. Details below.

April 22: The Madeleine School Parents Club is proud to present Shawn Marshall, from the Children’s Program, at 7pm. His presentation on Kids and Social Media focuses on educating parents on a variety of social media sites and provides up-to-date information and statistics on the impact that social media has on the developing brain including sleep, academics, and physical health.

April 23: The Grandparents and Special Persons Tea is set to start at 12:45pm. Look for the invitation below as well as in your Friday Folder.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Caryn Fiedler
(on behalf of Susan)

Sponsor Spotlight: Steve and Kate's Camp

In the weeks leading up to the Jogathon, we will be highlighting some of our generous sponsors who are supporting our Jogathon. This week, we are thanking Steve and Kate’s Camp for donating some of our great prizes this year.

Their camp conforms to kids, not the other way around. Instead of a rigid structure, they give campers choice. Instead of teaching kids the typical way, they give them tools and gentle guidance to help the kids become autodidacts, people who teach themselves. The difference is subtle–and it’s profound. There are a gazillion ways for kids to design a day at camp. One camper might dive into breadmaking and animation while another flies down a water slide and scores a goal in our inflatable soccer stadium. It’s up to them.

Steve and Kate's Camp doesn’t expect you to know when or what time you can get your troops to camp. That’s why their policy is as flexible as you need it to be. You can buy a whole summer membership or you can purchase as many day passes as you want and use them whenever. Didn’t use them? No sweat. They’ll give you a full refund for unused passes. And best of all, you don’t even have to tell them when you’re coming. Ta-da. Camp just got easier.

Interested in supporting our sponsor? Steve and Kate's Camp, which was founded in 1980, serves grades Pre-K through 7th. Register at www.steveandkate.com or call (503) 828-3042 ext 151.

Parent Ed Presentation: Children and Social Media

April 22 @ 7pm in Parish Hall

The Madeleine School Parents Club is proud to present Shawn Marshall, from the Children’s Program, on April 22 at 7pm.

His presentation on Kids and Social Media developed from the challenges that many of his clients and their families have experienced while navigating the intricacies of social media.  His presentation focuses on educating parents on a variety of social media sites and explores the potential negative impacts on their children.  He offers numerous recommendations to support parents, who like their kids, are dealing with the ever-changing social media.  He provides up-to-date information and statistics on the impact that social media has on the developing brain including sleep, academics, and physical health.

Shawn Marshall MA, LPC is a licensed professional counselor who has over 20 years of experience working with children and families.  He has worked in residential programs, community mental health, consulted with school districts and is currently at the Children’s Program in Portland.  He specializes in working with teens and has expertise in depression, anxiety, attention deficit, academic challenges, and oppositional behaviors.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

April 12 ~ Second Sunday of Easter ~ John 20:19-31

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

Today’s Gospel tells of the Risen Lord’s appearance to the disciples. Jesus’ disciples were confused and afraid as they gathered together. Jesus came to the place where they were and said, “Peace be with you” and showed them his hands and side. Thomas, who was not there that day, did not believe the others until Jesus appeared again and showed him his hands and side.

How do you think the disciples felt when they saw Jesus? How would you feel if Jesus appeared to you today? Do you sometimes have difficulty believing something that you have not seen for yourself? Give an example.

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Habitat for Humanity

• Volunteers needed April 15 & 18
• Hopebuilder Breakfast April 29

If you are still hesitant about joining other volunteers from The Madeleine who are helping to build a new home for the Sebastian-Pascual family, here’s an opportunity to learn more about the Habitat for Humanity and its building projects.

The annual Portland Habitat Hopebuilder breakfast is Wednesday, April 29 at 7:30 am at the Oregon Convention Center. This is Habitat’s largest fundraiser of the year. Guests enjoy a free breakfast during this interesting one-hour program that includes an update on Habitat’s involvement in the Portland Metro area, and testimonials from a family on their way to homeownership. They do pass the hat and make it easy for folks to contribute. If you’re interested contact Madeleine’s Habitat Co-Chair Jim Laubenthal, at 503-287-9144 or laubenthaljim@gmail.com and he’ll reserve a spot for you at the breakfast.

Also, volunteers are still needed for the Madeleine’s two remaining building dates this month: eight are needed for Wednesday April 15th, and one or two more for Saturday April 18th. Please contact Madeleine’s Volunteer Coordinators Susan and Mark Miller at 503-708-7395 or hoosiersusan2@gmail.com.

Finally, Susan and Mark are still are looking for additional photographers to capture the progress of this inter-faith build. They have other people so it would be a shared duty.

And thanks again to all Madeleine volunteers for their dedication and work on this home-building project!
