April 17, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Mrs. Schneider, Mrs. Myers and I had a wonderful trip to the National Catholic Education Association conference in Orlando, Florida last week. It is so energizing to meet with so many Catholic teachers and administrators from across the United States and beyond. I had an interesting conversation with a teacher from Belize and one of the best sessions I attended was put on by a team of “Parent Educators” from Australia. We were quite fortunate that this year most of our expenses were covered by our participation in the federal government’s Title II program that is administered by Portland Public Schools. Many of our Portland area schools took advantage of this opportunity and so we saw many Oregon colleagues at the conference. Next year the conference is in San Diego. I am keeping my fingers crossed that PPS will make this available to us again. It is exciting to get away, but it is also great to be back home.

We have decided to go forward with offering our Madeleine School Summer Camps through August 21st this year. Ms. Savery is putting together a program of the weekly themed camps and costs. The brochure should be ready next week. Gaila and her crew do a wonderful job of keeping the kids busy during the summer months. Please look over the offerings to see if The Madeleine Summer Camps should be a part of your summer plans.

               Have a great weekend.

               Sincerely,
               Susan

Spirit Week is almost here

During the week of April 27th, Student Government will be organizing our annual Spirit Week. Each day, students are invited to dress up in a different way to boost school spirit for everyone. Here are the Spirit Week events:

A reminder that though this week is meant to be fun, it does NOT mean you can just come to school in free dress. You have to wear what it selected for that day, or else just wear your uniform.

Thank you and have fun!

Go Madeleine!

Fourth grade girls won first place in the shuttle race at last week's track meet.

Bake Sale: Monday April 27th!

Location: outside if weather permits, otherwise in the atrium

Proceeds will support Medical Teams International’s efforts to provide safe and running water to communities of need.

During Holy Week, the seventh grade class took a field trip to Medical Teams International’s Real Life Exhibit. On the field trip they learned about real life hardships that many people in the world face, and it helped the class understand the world in a different perspective. The Real Life Exhibit shows viewers what life is like for families living in poverty and affected by natural disasters. For example, the exhibit shows a little boy in Uganda carrying a Jerry, or five gallon jug of water. Little boys and girls walk many miles every day to transport water to their family. As a result, they were not able to get an education, and fetching water runs the risk of getting kidnapped or assaulted. The 7th grade students were deeply moved by what they learned and feel the need to do something to help improve the lives of others through this bake sale.

Please help the 7th grade in supporting Medical Teams International by:

In the coming week, please take a few minutes to look at the display in the Garden Room, that the 7th grade created. It is to help students and families understand how these proceeds will help other people.

Thank you for your support!

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

A big thank you goes out to the first grade for bringing in 159 lunches this week.  On a cold, wet Tuesday there many folks lined up waiting for the kitchen to open.  The first grade did a great job packing big lunches this week and it is very appreciated by our friends at St. Michael’s.

Special Visitor to 4th Grade

On Thursday, April 2, the 4th grade class had a visit from Kerry Tymchuk, the director of the Oregon History Museum.

This visit was a direct result of the persuasive letters the students wrote to the Statuary Hall Commission. Mr. Tymchuk told us that other people communicated with the Commission, but they liked the video and letters from our 4th graders the best. Congratulations, 4th Graders!

He brought some artifacts to share and had a very difficult time stumping the 4th graders with state symbols. He finally asked what the state shell was, and no one could come up with The Hairy Triton. He was quite impressed with their knowledge of the state symbols.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

April 19 ~ Third Sunday of Easter ~ Luke 24:35-48

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus appears among the disciples and says, “Peace be to you.” But the Apostles feel anything but peace in this moment! They are frightened out of their wits because they think Jesus is a ghost. Only after Jesus shows the Apostles the nail marks in his feet and hands, and eats some of their food do they believe Jesus is truly risen. Jesus explains that from now on, they are called to testify to his life, death and resurrection, so that all people, everywhere, might believe, repent their sins and be saved.

Think of an experience that brought peace to your life in the midst of a difficult time. Describe it. Where is the “mission field” Jesus has sent you?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

First Eucharist—
10:00 am Mass on Sunday, April 26

This year’s First Eucharist Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, April 26 at our 10:00 am Mass.

With 38 children receiving the sacrament at this Mass, it will be very well attended and longer than usual. Of course, all are encouraged to celebrate First Eucharist with our children and families, and the reception afterward.

However, if you have a busy Sunday and prefer a Mass with somewhat fewer people and a more modest time commitment, it might be a good weekend to check out our 5:00 pm Saturday or 8:00 am Sunday Masses.

Habitat for Humanity Hopebuilder Breakfast April 29

There’s still time to sign up for a free breakfast to learn more about the Habitat for Humanity and its building projects, like the one that volunteers from The Madeleine are working on.

The annual Portland Habitat Hopebuilder breakfast is Wednesday, April 29 at 7:30 am at the Oregon Convention Center. This is Habitat’s largest fundraiser of the year. Guests enjoy a free breakfast during this interesting one-hour program that includes an update on Habitat’s involvement in the Portland Metro area, and testimonials from a family on their way to homeownership. They do pass the hat and make it easy for folks to contribute. If you’re interested contact Madeleine’s

Habitat Co-Chair Jim Laubenthal, at 503-287-9144 or laubenthaljim@gmail.com and he’ll reserve a spot for you at the breakfast.

As parishioners know, volunteers from the Madeleine and other faiths have been working for months, building a home for a family that immigrated from Guatemala 17 years ago. The house should be completed in the next month or two, although volunteers are still needed.

If you are interested, please contact The Madeleine’s Volunteer Coordinators Susan and Mark Miller at 503-708-7395 or hoosiersusan2@gmail.com.

Of course, a very big THANK YOU goes to all the Madeleine volunteers for their dedication and work on this home-building project!

Our Children’s Ministries Are Growing!

Have you noticed all the new families in the pews around you? What a blessing to see our parish grow! Our outreach to these families is expanding. Becky is looking for ministers to serve in the following roles:

1) Baptism Outreach - Develop and implement a program to support those who have received the Sacrament of Baptism.

2) Children’s Liturgy of the Word Coordinator - Assist with our CLW catechists’ needs such as scheduling, lesson and activity planning, developing and supplementing curriculum.

3) Assistant Leaders for Parents of Babies/Toddlers Playgroup - Help get this group off the ground! Assist with a variety of activities needed to start up a support playgroup for new parents.

Each role requires a commitment of 2-3 hours per week and can be done mostly from your home. Feeling called to minister in this way? Please contact Becky! Men and women of all ages are welcome! bmoore@themadeleine.edu or 503-281-5777 x27.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!

Contributing to the Footnotes

If you have information to contribute to the Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
