A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

All schools in the Archdiocese of Portland participate in an accreditation process under the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA). Schools prepare for a visit every six years by writing a self-study document based on standards and benchmarks outlined by the WCEA. Our last visit was in 2012 and we received the highest accreditation term of six years.

One of the topics that we must revisit each year, as part of the accreditation process, has to do with our school’s Catholic identity. There are eight standards to be reviewed over the six year period until our next visit.  Each year we are asked to survey our shareholders, both school parents and non-school parishioners, to get feedback on how effective The Madeleine School is in relation to two standards. This year we need to assess Standard 1: Mission and Philosophy, and Standard 5: Parents as the Primary Educators.

WCEA provides a survey, which we put on Survey Monkey, to gather information for our report and all parents and parishioners are asked to take a minute to go online and respond to the indicators. The link is www.themadeleine.edu/schoolsurvey.

I read the statements to be rated and I think some will be easy to answer and others you may not feel you have enough information to answer. (Not to worry-there is a “Don’t know”)  The survey will be available until Nov. 14th, so I hope that gives everyone enough time to complete it.  We will use the information as a part of our WCEA report and will share the findings with our community. We will also use the data to design an action plan for the coming year(s) in order to strengthen our Catholic identity. Thanks, in advance, for taking the time to respond to the survey questions.

Have a great weekend and Happy Halloween.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

St. Michael's Lunches: 1st and 2nd grades

The Madeleine continues to provide amazing support to the St. Michael’s Lunch Program.  Last week, the Second grade brought in 227 beautifully decorated Halloween sack lunches and this week, our First graders delivered 249 well packed lunches.  With these numbers, volunteers make sure our friends at St. Michael’s have plenty to eat each day.  A big thank you to the Seventh grade for pitching in and helping us deliver and distribute lunches this week.

Greetings from the Art Room!

Caring for all God's creatures

A special thank you to Aine, sixth grade, for her gift of special window clings that alert birds to danger and help prevent tragic bird strikes. We see a frosted white design, birds see glowing blue, which breaks up the reflective surface of the window glass and warns them that they are not seeing a passageway to more trees. It's fall migration time, and bird activity is at a peak.

What you can do to help our native birds:

Google Classroom Comes to the Art Department!

In an effort to enhance communication and awareness for Art, grades 5 - 8 will be able to find information about current and upcoming art projects at Google Classroom.  Please check with your son or daughter about this great new tool.

Happy bird watching!

Study of Executive Functioning at Madeleine School

The Madeleine faculty is doing a book study on Fifty Tips to Help Students Succeed by Marydee Sklar. There’s a lot of interest in the Madeleine School community about what executive functioning means and what we can do to further our executive functioning skills.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Although American researchers have studied homework for over 60 years, scholars are more interested in researching homework than ever before.  Researchers do not agree; however, on the advantages or disadvantages of homework as an instructional tool.  Homework often causes a great deal of conflict among teachers, students and parents.

Register your Fred Meyer Rewards card today!  We have already earned over $1600 for the school with 56 families signed up and know we can earn even more free money if you sign up this weekend!
