A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The school seems to be buzzing these days with auction-related tasks, planning for the upcoming parent teacher conferences, the new hot lunch program and the normal day to day activities.  I think our newsletter has all the information you need for these things so I want to talk to you about…..HEAD LICE.

While we do not, I repeat, do not have a major problem with head lice here at school, they are a fact of life for all kids and adults, too. We have a “no nit” policy so all nits, in addition to live critters, must be removed from the hair before students can return to school. I think that is one reason why our incidence rate is low. When these critters show up, there is no need to panic. First, please let us know so that we can check heads in those targeted classes. Mrs. Rosebrook is a wealth of information, so don’t hesitate to call her. Admittedly, there is a lot of work for parents to do to get rid of them, so prevention is the key. I remember a parent once telling me that we, the school office, should check heads every week. All I could answer was “Are you kidding me?” Kids can be free of lice and then go to one sleepover, borrow someone’s hat or helmet, pick up a bug at a movie theatre, play dress up with hats and tiaras, etc. So there is no way we can control the spread.

So I ask you to add one more chore to your Sunday night routine as you get ready for the coming school week. Check your child’s head. Don’t wait for them to complain about an itchy scalp. It has been recommended that a wet head check is more effective in finding active head lice. So perhaps after bath time and before story time, please take a look.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan
