May 8, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have wonderful plans for this weekend, especially on Sunday to honor all the mothers in your life. The weatherman is promising sun and warm temperatures so outdoor activities are at the top of my list. The deck at my house needs scrubbing, sidewalks need power washing, patio furniture is coming out of storage, so my Saturday is all planned. Sunday, however, will be reserved for wine-tasting with the Steele clan, as has been our tradition for the past few years. I hope you also have a fun, relaxing Mother’s Day.

Bring a flower on Monday for May Crowning

On Monday our weekly prayer service will be to honor our Holy Mother Mary. The 2nd grade is planning to lead us in our yearly May Crowning. They would like for every child to bring a flower to school on Monday morning as part of our observance. So put a reminder note on the refrigerator, by the backpacks, in the lunchboxes, etc. to bring a single blossom on Monday morning.

Art Show Kudos

I hope you had an opportunity to come to last night’s Art Show. As usual Mrs. Galash, with the help of volunteers, displayed the most incredible student work. Every year I marvel at the quality and variety of art that the students produce. It is certainly a testament to the dedication of Ida to her profession and her ability to bring out the best in our children.  Kudos, also, to Ms. Bjore for the performance by our school choir and strings musicians. This is the first year for both groups and they were wonderful. They practice only twice a week, but they performed like they have been in the spotlight for years.  Great job, Cynthia.

Deadline Reminders

Finally, a quick reminder that May 15th is the deadline to fulfill your purchase of scrip for the year and to complete your volunteer hours. Hopefully, you saw your scrip statement in last week’s Friday Folders. Volunteer hours can be checked in the front office and logged online by clicking here. Bills for unfilled scrip and volunteer hour obligations will go out the week of May 18th.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

In-Parish Tuition Applications
due today!

A reminder that today is the deadline for submitting your In-Parish Tuition Application for the 2015-16 school year. Those who do not complete and return the application, and meet the requirements within, will not receive the discounted In-Parish rate. Families with returning students who paid In-Parish Tuition this year received their 2015-2016 In-Parish Tuition application packets in Friday Folders last week.

When filling out the pledge card please be sure to include an entry for Christmas, Easter and our Capital Repair Fund, as well as the weekly offertory. In addition, please be mindful that due to increasing costs (employee healthcare, utilities, increases in programs, etc.) our parish budget is growing about 5% this year, so if you can make a commensurate bump in your donations, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you did not receive an application and wish to apply for In-Parish Tuition, visit www.themadeleine.edu/ipt to download the forms. Then, please complete them and return to the Parish Office by May 8.

Hats off to Mrs. Galash and Ms. Bjore

Once again the Parish Hall was transformed into an art gallery. Proud students could be seen showing off the results of their creative efforts.  From turtles to polar bears to sunflowers, owls, and vases -- there was something to catch everyone's eye!  Start making room on your walls and fridges, because all the great artwork will be coming home in the coming weeks.

Thank you again to Mrs. Galash and her volunteers for putting on such a great event! Thanks also go out to Ms. Bjore and the Madeleine School Choir and Strings Orchestra for their performances at the Art Show. It really was a celebration of all the arts at Madeleine!

Show your support of the Arts in Education

If you enjoyed the Art Show, please consider being part of the magic that makes the Art Show happen by helping take down the art on Monday, May 11th at 8:30am.

Exciting new ways to enjoy your child's art!

We will be rolling out a wonderful new on-line Art Gallery of Madeleine artwork.  Imagine - no more "refrigerator guilt"  since the art will always be available to view at our Artsonia site.  There are even delightful treasures that can be made featuring your child's art, everything from quilt squares to ceramic tiles, iphone cases to journals and many, many more!  Every purchase benefits our school. Stay tuned!

Look What We Bought!

Heifer Project Success

Do you remember the Heifer Project? Our fundraising ended up raising $918, which is a very good result. With this money Heifer was able to buy . . . a llama ~ a sheep ~ a pig ~ a goat ~ a rabbit ~ 3 bee colonies ~ 2 ducks ~ 3 chickens ~ 2 geese ~ a share of heifers ~ a share of fish.

Heifer’s motto is “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.”  Along with the knowledge of how to care for these animals, the village or villager will be able to raise a herd of these animals, and eat cleanly and safely for a lifetime. Good Work Madeleine School!

Help Wanted: Parents Club Executive Committee

Only a few positions remain on the 2015-16 Madeleine Parents' Club Executive Committee, and we're looking for a few energetic souls to join the team!

The Parents' Club has two primary goals: managing the various fundraisers that help keep our tuition as low as possible, and building a sense of community among the great families here at The Madeleine.

If you're able to contribute, or if you'd like to recommend someone, we'd love to hear from you about filling one of these four remaining positions:

Vice President: Works alongside the President to support other Executive Committee members and coordinate the back-to-school BBQ. Note: The VP has a Golden Ticket to the President's chair the following year -- this isn't a one-and-done appearance.

Secretary: Records and distributes notes from the monthly Parents' Club meetings.

Fundraising Coordinator: A brand-new Parents' Club position, this person is charged with identifying, vetting and coordinating solicitations for "Dining For Dollars" dinners out, as well as other new fundraising opportunities as they arise.

If you're interested in any of these positions or know someone who might be a good fit, Parents' Club wants to hear from you! Please email next year's President, Jonas Allen, at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com with any questions, recommendations, or to express your own interest in joining the team.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The seventh grade brought in 104 lunches this week.  A big thank you goes out the the Hughes family who delivered 46 sausage roll lunches and the Kenagy family who contributed 24 meat and cheese lunches.  That’s a lot of sandwich making during these hectic days of spring.  Thank you to all the families who find the time to make an extra lunch or two, each sandwich is very appreciated.

One final note... Louise and I are graduating our last Madeleine students this year and we need to find replacements.  If you’re interested in taking the reins, please contact Susan Steele.  It’s best to share this job with another person.  The hours are Tuesdays from 8:15-9:30 am.  You need a large-ish vehicle, or one that can carry up to 400 lunches to St. Michael’s in downtown Portland. And finally, you need to submit a weekly write-up to Friday Footnotes.  It’s a really fun way to stay connected to the Madeleine community and get to know the eighth grade class.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

May 10 ~ Sixth Sunday of Easter ~

John 15:9-17

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

Today we hear that Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment. He said: This is my commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for a friend. Jesus went on to say you are my friends, and I have told you all my Father told me. I choose you to go out and share with others what I have told you.

How do you show your love for others? Why is it important to love one another?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.
