February 20, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I will be gone for a few days next week to the annual Principals Retreat. Our retreat master is Fr. Pat Hannon, a Holy Cross priest from University of Portland. He is also the brother of the principal of Holy Cross School in north Portland. I will bet that some great family stories will be told at the gathering.  I always look forward to sharing this experience with my fellow Archdiocesan principals and catching up on all the happenings in our diocesan schools.

Science Night is coming

Since I won’t be around next Friday, I want to remind you that Thursday, March 5th is Science Night. This is one evening you don’t want to miss. Ms. Yuhas, our science teacher, with the able help of the middle school students, have a fun-packed event planned. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will have their science projects on display in the Atrium. The quality of the work is amazing. They also will be organizing activities that the rest of the students can participate in. Who doesn’t love dropping raw eggs from the second floor in a self-designed container or making florescent slime?  Be sure to put the event on your calendar…..Thursday night, March 5th at 6:30.

Sink Hole?!

You may have noticed that the blacktop by one of the tether poles has what might be called a miniature “sink hole” on the south side. It is supposed to be fixed before this weekend, and hopefully there won’t be any further problems. But I am beginning to wonder if evil spirits put a “hex” on our playground surfaces, given the deterioration of the material under the climbing structures.  If the Field of Dreams starts growing grass, then I know we will have to have Fr. Mike do an exorcism to thwart any playground demons!

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

Science Night 2015

Thursday, March 5th

You’re  invited!  The Madeleine School proudly presents Science Night 2015 on Thursday, March 5th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm.

The middle school will be hosting an evening of science challenges and fun for scientists of all ages.  Parents and children are invited to play at the bubble station, make their own slime, build science toys, or compete in the egg drop competition and boat races.  Middle school students will be also presenting many exciting science demonstrations.  All of the 6 – 8th grade science experiments will be on display in the Atrium.  See you there!

In case you missed it . . . Playground Update

On January 21st, sections of the playground where the surface has deteriorated were cordoned off and closed based on recommendations by the School Advisory Council, Safety & Security Committee and Pastoral Council.

Since that time, many steps have been taken including coordination with the Archdiocese regarding an action plan for repairing the surface and meetings with surface experts who have provided us with recommendations for repairs. In addition, it is important to note that major repairs must be completed during warm/dry weather, and require at least one week without precipitation so that the base material is dry.

Knowing how much the students love to use the playground, we will continue to keep you updated as we work with the vendor to develop and implement a repair plan.

Madeleine’s Box Top Class Competition

Have you brought in your boxtops yet?

During the month of February, the Parents Club is hosting a friendly competition to see which class can bring in the most BoxTops.  The winning class will be treated to a donut party!

All you need to do is drop a Ziploc bag, full of BoxTops, marked with your grade in the white bin near the gym stairs.  At the end of the month, the Parents Club will count and tally to determine the winning class.

Want an easy way to get your volunteer hours from home?  Step up and volunteer to manage the Madeleine BoxTops Program.  The time commitment is about one hour per week, and you can do it from home!  Previous volunteers in this position have said that it is an easy job, but that you have to be detail oriented.

Contact Alyssa Pace, Parents Club President, at alyssapace@yahoo.com and let her know you are willing to count and sort labels.

Counselor Corner

by Carolyn Ullman

Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate strengths in how children and adults process and understand information.

I will be highlighting each of the multiple intelligences in the next few Friday Footnotes.

St. Michael's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

We haven't gone on Spring Break yet, but we have already made and donated 4,295 lunches to St. Michaels. Thank you to everyone who has made sandwiches, decorated a lunch bag or helped with delivery. We really are making a difference in people's lives one lunch at a time!

Updated Notice from the IRS

NOTE: The past weeks, we have posted information from the IRS regarding IP-PIN numbers required during filing of Federal Income Tax for anyone who has had a background check run through the Archdiocese in past years. Following is updated information. Thank you.

The Archdiocese has just learned that the IRS is delayed in issuing IP-PINs. Thus, you may not receive an IP-PIN during this tax season, even though you had a background check performed in connection with service for the Archdiocese, a parish or school. The IRS will continue to issue IP-PINs on a rolling basis. If you have received an IP-PIN, you must use it to file your taxes. If you have not received an IP-PIN, IRS advises that the best way to protect yourself is to file your taxes early. IRS apologizes for the delays and the confusion it has caused.

The FAQs posted in the Archdiocese’s website are being revised accordingly.

If you have questions, please contact the IRS Identity Protection Special Unit at 1-800-908-4490 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Please do not contact the Archdiocese or your parish or school. Neither the Archdiocese nor your parish or school has any further information on the issuance of IP-PINs.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

February 22 ~ First Sunday of Lent ~ Mark 1:12-15

As part of the Action Plan stemming from the results of this year's Catholic Identity survey results, a weekly faith sharing article is now being included each week in Friday Footnotes.

In this passage, Mark tells us how the Holy Spirit sent Jesus into the desert, where he stayed for 40 days. While there, Satan tempted him and the angels took care of him. Later, after John the Baptist had been arrested, Jesus began his ministry, telling all to “repent and believe in the gospel.”

How are you tempted? How do Angels come and take care of you? If you were living in Galilee in Jesus’ time, do you think you would have been one of his followers?

We encourage parents to reflect on these questions at home with their children and family.

Lenten Fasting and Abstinence Regulations

Every year, we get questions about the fasting requirements for Catholics during Lent. And, sometimes, those discussions can get animated with family histories, special exceptions and imaginative definitions of fasting. So, we thought this year, we’d publish what the Archdiocese sent us. Enjoy (or don’t, if it’s a Friday!).

To quote:

All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All Catholics between the ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
