May 20, 2016
A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Next year we will begin a new Accreditation cycle with a host of tasks that we need to accomplish. This is in anticipation of the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) visit by a team of administrators and teachers. In the fall of 2017 these people will spend three days on campus reading our self-study, visiting classrooms, looking at evidence, talking to community stakeholders, etc. to give us an objective opinion on how we are doing in meeting the religious and academic needs of our students. It is a tremendous job to get ready for the visit, but last time they came we received a 6 year term with no qualifications, which is the highest rank you can get. Woot, woot!
2016 - 2017 School Year Schedule
The reason I am bringing this up now is for our “super planner” parents who want to know our calendar for the coming year. We are granted 4 school days next year to complete the self-study, and as in 2010, we will be working during the Thanksgiving week. This means there will be no school for the entire Thanksgiving week. There is no perfect time to dismiss school, but many of our families travel over the Thanksgiving weekend and our school population is down during that time. It is also advantageous for the faculty because we can just focus on the writing task without any distractions. Accreditation will be the focus next year, so you will be hearing lots more as the weeks unfold.
"June Packet" Incentive
Speaking of next year…… Please take a look in your child’s Friday Folder for a large manila envelope. Mrs. Rosebrook is sending home the newly renamed “June packet” with more forms to fill out than should be allowed, but each very important to the operation of the school. I think you are going to need all weekend to complete them! That is a slight exaggeration, but there is some truth to it. However, please have pity on Angela who has to sort and record all the information. Please, please, please, take some time and fill out the forms and return them as soon as possible. I don’t want Angela to be here until July processing. Let me offer an incentive that seemed to work last year. The first 20 people who put their entire completed (no missing forms) packet in Angela’s hands will get a little gift card to Starbucks. Thanks so much for your prompt response.
We Need Your Input for the Auction
Also speaking of next year . . . . Please take two minutes to complete a quick auction survey to give us your input about the honorary chair and the paddle raise for the 2016 Madeleine Auction. The survey can be accessed by clicking on the following link: www.themadeleine.edu/survey.
Sincerely,
Susan

Spirit Week
Monday, May 23 - Friday May 27
Spirit week this year is scheduled for the week of May 23rd. It is a fun time to celebrate our school and rediscover what we love about it. Student Government has planned days for us to have fun and dress up. Here are the themes for each day of Spirit Week this year:
- Monday, May 23 - Pajama Day - Wear your PJs to school.
- Tuesday, May 24 - Tourist Tuesday - Dress up like a tourist exploring the world. Wear things like khaki shorts, Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, and funny hats (but don’t wear the hats in the classroom, of course!).
- Wednesday, May 25 - Way Back Wednesday - Dress up from a time period in the past. Medieval, 1980s, or World War II - it’s all up to you!
- Thursday, May 26 - Dress Your Best - In honor of Mass on Thursday, put on your Sunday best. Come to school in a tie, bow tie, collared shirt, dress or skirt.
- Friday, May 27 - Ready to Run - It’s time for the Jogathon! Come to school in running gear such as tennis shoes, athletic shorts, and a t-shirt. Get ready to run and support our school.
Have fun!

Jogathon: Just 1 Week Away!
Friday, May 27 @ 9:30 (K - 4) and 10:30 (5 - 8)
The Jogathon is next Friday, May 27! It’s not too late to get started, but now is the time. In order for this event to be successful, all students are encouraged to participate in whatever way they are able. If you haven’t done so already, please set up your PledgeStar account and start collecting pledges! For complete information, please visit our website: http://themadeleine.edu/jogathon.
A few families have indicated that they’ll be out of town on the day of the event…not to worry! Those students can still participate on their own and let us know how many laps they ran/walked in a 45 minute period. We’ve heard from families who have successfully done this in previous years. Simply email us to report your child’s laps after they’ve been completed jogathon@themadeleine.edu.
Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who stepped up to volunteer! We still need at least 3 additional talliers for 8th grade and 1 one more for 4th grade. To sign-up, please email jogathon@themadeleine.edu.
Song Dedications
Song dedications available at the Jogathon! Here is a fun way to support your runner(s): Dedicate a song to them! For only $5 you can choose from one of 8 pre-selected songs. One dedication per song, but you may purchase as many as you like. To order a song dedication, please click here.
This Week’s Challenges
- Any student who has either 5 per lap pledges or $150 collected will have their name entered into a prize drawing.
- Any student who has collected $150 will get a free dress pass.
- Any student who has sent 10 or more emails will get their name entered into a prize drawing.
Classroom Challenge
Congratulations to 6th grade for winning the classroom challenge! They received the most pledges and were treated to ice cream for their efforts. Way to go 6th grade! This week's classroom challenge: the class who has sent the most pledge requests (regardless of what’s been received) will receive a prize.
The deadline for this week’s prize drawings is Saturday, May 21

The Madeleine Musical
June 1 - 4 @ 7pm
The Madeleine School presents Into the Woods on June 1 - 4 right here on campus in the Commons. Come see the music room transformed into a small box performance space you may not have realized existed here at Madeleine. Enjoy this adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical featuring your favorite fairytale characters from the classic Brothers Grimm fables.
Performances will start promptly at 7:00. No price for admission, but due to the small theater space, tickets must be reserved in advance by going to themadeleine.edu/musical. The Madeleine cast of Into the Woods has worked very hard, and it shows!! We look forward to seeing you in the audience!
Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!
If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.
The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!
Join the Bridge Program!
Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School
The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.
Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:
- New Parents Potluck in September (approx. two hours)
- Open House in February (approx. two hours)
- School Tours in February (approx. two hours)
If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.
St. Stephens Lunch Program
Making a difference, one lunch at a time!
Message was received! Mrs. Doran and Mrs. Hart’s Fifth Grade Class made 206 lunches! Fifth Grade, you received a round of applause when we pulled up to St. Stephens with so much food to give. So far we have made just over 7,000 lunches during this school year. Thank you, 5th Grade, for making such an impressive effort.

Youth Ministry
June 5th and June 12th @ 7pm
With the Madeleine Spring Musical right around the corner, we have decided to have our last two middle school youth nights of the school year on Sunday, June 5th and Sunday, June 12th from 7-8:15pm. These youth nights promise to be memorable and fun, so bring a friend and your sunny attitude! Speaking of sun, hot weather calls for play time on the field. Don't forget your athletic shoes.
In the meantime, do not miss the Walk For Water event taking place at Laurelhurst Park on Sunday, May 22nd at 1pm to raise awareness for poor communities living without adequate drinking water. Come walk so they don't have to walk! See you there!
Fun on the Eighth Grade Ashland Trip
The 8th Grade trip to Ashland was a wonderful success. We had a fantastic time. The students enjoyed two plays, performed their own play in Lithia Park, visited the Oregon Vortex/House of Mystery (or did we...), enjoyed dorm food, explored downtown Ashland, logged at least 15 miles, and had fun all along the way. A memorable trip. We have several “thank yous” to some very special people.
- Thank you to the Parents Club for their generous donation.
- Thank you to Brandon Anderson for donating a significant portion of the charter bus.
- Thank you to Denise Mathes for the delicious ice cream - what a treat.
- Thank you to the amazing chaperones who went far above and beyond the call of duty, and were super fun too: Alison Anderson ~ Brad Hermanson ~ Mary Hoglund ~ John Kenagy ~ Kevin MacKenzie ~ Mark Miller ~ Tracy Sax
Family Faith Sharing
May 22 ~ The Most Holy Trinity ~ John 16:12-15
Today’s gospel continues with Jesus’ advice and instructions to the disciples at the Last Supper. He promises that the Spirit will be there to guide his followers to the truth. The Spirit will speak in Jesus’ name, just as Jesus speaks in the Father’s name. Each of these three Persons in one God belongs to the other. We call this mystery of God’s identity the Blessed Trinity. What is “God’s truth” (hint: L-O-V-E)? How do you share that truth with others? What sign or symbol reminds you of the Trinity? Why?
Summer Camps
At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

Save the date! Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood
Saturday, June 4 • Mass of Thanksgiving 10:00 am Sunday, June 5
Deacon Anthony Ahamefule has been one of the most popular seminarians/deacons
we’ve had the pleasure of hosting at The Madeleine. His hard work, willingness
to learn and to teach, and humble manner have combined to make him truly
“our own.”
Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood will be Saturday, June 4,
11:00 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His Mass of Thanksgiving at The Madeleine
will be at our 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 5, with a reception to follow
in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to both Masses
Help show your appreciation for all he has done for us by attending one
or both Masses.
NOTE: Many people have asked what sort of ordination gift might be helpful. We are aware of several options, one of which is a collection of funds for a vehicle or for vestments and a chalice. If you wish to contribute, the easiest path is to include your gift in a card or envelope and mail or drop off at the Parish Office. Please be sure to note that this gift is for Father Anthony.
