May 6, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents,

As I mentioned in April we will be having some changes in personnel next year. To review…..Ms. Hart is expecting and will be leaving The Madeleine to be a full time mommy next year and Mrs. Doran will be returning to teaching full time in 5th. Mrs. Chambers will be returning to 6th grade in late fall after her little one arrives. Another unexpected change is that our beloved Mrs. Slavik has decided to retire from teaching this year. She has been in the 4th grade classroom for 18 years and was involved in the parish faith formation program before that. She will be greatly missed and she leaves some very big shoes to fill. However, Mrs. Langhus is going to make the leap and carry on in Julie’s place. Jenn has been our 1st grade teacher for nine years and after concentrating on phonics, number sequence, and picture books, she wants to experience what intermediate students can do. Good bye spontaneous dance parties, hello Oregon Trail Overnight! Well...I am sure there will be a few dance parties in 4th Grade too!

So that leaves an opening in 1st grade. We will be interviewing some great candidates in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. I believe that the Holy Spirit always watches over us and sends us the right person at the right time.

Speaking of the right person……I don’t think we could ask for a better art person than Mrs. Galash. What a superb art show last night! The talent of our students was beautifully showcased and that talent is a tribute to her creativity and passion for art. Well done, Ida.

A big thank you to Cheri Krebs and Alison Anderson for organizing another great Book Fair. The wonderful selection of books encouraged super sales, which translates into more reading material for our library. Volunteers also play a big part in the success of the Book Fair, so again thank you to all who helped with the event.

Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day,

Susan

Heifer LogoTotal Raised for Heifer: $569!!!

Thank you Madeleine students for your support of the Heifer Project. Together we raised $569 to help people in poverty around the world. All together we purchased three flocks of chickens, a flock of geese, a flock of ducks, five hives of bees, and an irrigation pump. In addition, we also donated $129 to the area of greatest need and provided for a portion of a llama, pig, and herd of rabbits. Great job Madeleine! Way to live out our call to help the poor and marginalized around the world.

The Madeleine School Gets a Shout Out from Stevie Wonder!

Kindergarten Dad, Mike Phillips has played with Stevie Wonder since 1996. He recently did a few shows with him at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Mike told him about the Kindergarten class career day and asked him to do a video for the class. He knows about The Madeleine and was happy to do this for little Mike who he considers his God child.

Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) Training

Training begins May 14

In the event of a citywide or regional emergency such as a major earthquake, households need to be prepared to be on their own for at least a week. Neighborhoods need to be prepared for self-sufficiency, too. Volunteer neighborhood rescuers will likely be first on-the-scene when firefighters and police are slowed by impassable streets or overwhelmed by calls for help.

Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs) are Portland residents trained by the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management and Portland Fire & Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance within their own neighborhoods. NET members are trained to save lives and property until professional responders can arrive. Anyone who lives or works in Portland can take NET training.

The next Basic NET training begins on May 14. Click here for registration instructions. Click here if you want to learn more about Portland’s NET program. If you have any questions about the training, contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com. She was trained as a NET a few years ago and is active on the Alameda NET team.

hometourVolunteer at the Irvington Home Tour

Sunday, May 15

Have a good time volunteering to be a Home Tour Guide at the 34th annual Irvington Home Tour, scheduled for Sunday, May 15th. Sign up with a friend for a three hour morning or afternoon shift to be a Home Tour Guide by contacting Kay Mosby (volunteer@irvingtonhometour.com). Then you get to see the other homes on the tour for free, a $25.00 value per ticket. It’s a fun day for a good cause.

The Irvington Community Association uses the proceeds from The Home Tour to support and fund grants to local non-profits, schools, beautification projects, neighborhood events and preservation of the qualities inherent in the Historic Irvington community.

family Family Faith Sharing

May 8 ~ The Ascension of the Lord ~ Luke 24:46-53

Today’s Gospel reading is from the very end of Luke. Jesus is talking with his disciples and reminds them that it was written, “the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.” He also reminds them that in the name of the Messiah, repentance and forgiveness of all sins would be preached from Jerusalem and throughout the world. Then Jesus blesses the disciples and ascends into heaven. Remember a time when you have told another person (or God) that you’re sorry for something you said or did. How did that make you feel? Why do you think it’s important to forgive and be forgiven?

Save the date! Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood

Saturday, June 4 • Mass of Thanksgiving 10:00 am Sunday, June 5

Deacon Anthony Ahamefule has been one of the most popular seminarians/deacons we’ve had the pleasure of hosting at The Madeleine. His hard work, willingness to learn and to teach, and humble manner have combined to make him truly “our own.”
Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood will be Saturday, June 4, 11:00 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His Mass of Thanksgiving at The Madeleine will be at our 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 5, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to both Masses

Help show your appreciation for all he has done for us by attending one or both Masses.

NOTE: Many people have asked what sort of ordination gift might be helpful. We are aware of several options, one of which is a collection of funds for a vehicle or for vestments and a chalice. If you wish to contribute, the easiest path is to include your gift in a card or envelope and mail or drop off at the Parish Office. Please be sure to note that this gift is for Father Anthony.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
