A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of our academic goals this year is to focus on writing using the new English Language Arts (ELA) standards that the Archdiocese of Portland developed and distributed this fall. The writing section is divided into three main areas: persuasive/opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing and narrative writing. Since our school year is also conveniently divided into three trimesters, we decided to focus on one type of writing for each time block. This fall we are working on narratives.

So what is a narrative? In very simple terms a narrative tells a story. It can be a true story or an imaginary one. It has characters and a setting. The story has an order to it and includes transitions. Finally it has a beginning, middle and end. For a Kindergartener narrative writing might consist of a combination of drawings and dictation. It might focus on one event or a few related events. A third grader should be able to use more descriptive details, build characters, and organize the sequence of events in a logical order. They might add dialogue and perhaps use a narrator to tell the story. By middle school, narratives, both real and imagined, establish context and point of view, use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to show sequence, and capture the emotions and descriptive details of the characters.

In addition to this in-depth review of writing, our teachers use the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing to assess the progress our students are making. Teachers look at ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluency, conventions, and presentation. We have been using this program for many years and it has shaped many talented writers from The Madeleine. If you enjoy reading what your children have written, thank a teacher!

Speaking of thanking……With all the excitement of our Auction, I did not thank the generous cooks who prepared meals for our teaching staff during Parent/Teacher Conferences. Those are long days and it was so great to relax and enjoy a delicious meal. I don’t know all the people involved with the food preparation, (they are a humble group), but I heard that Lisa Manthey, Mary Hoglund, Marni Campbell, and Evelyn Bian were instrumental in this covert operation. So to all of you who contributed to the feast, thank you from the Madeleine staff.

                                                 Sincerely,

                                                 Susan

#GivingTuesday: Join the Global Celebration of Generosity

December 1st

#Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable giving season. It brings together the collective power of individuals, non-profits, schools and businesses to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. It is observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which this year occurs on December 1st.

This year The Madeleine School will join the #GivingTuesday effort in 3 ways:

This week we are focusing on the new science equipment that will be available to our Mad scientists. Just like Santa at this time of year, Ann Yuhas has been busy finalizing her list. Here are some highlights of what will be added to the science lab in the coming months:

These funds go into the library and each of the classrooms.

There will be the Classroom Wish List if you would like to buy your child's teacher a book to have in their classroom.

We will be packing up on Friday morning December 4th, but will be open during coffee and donuts if you need to do a little Christmas shopping without the kids around.

foodSt. Vincent de Paul Annual Door-To-Door Food Drive

November 22nd @ 11:30am

St. Vincent de Paul needs “all hands on deck” for our annual Door To Door Christmas food drive on Sunday, November 22nd at 11:30am (after the 10:00 mass). No better way to embrace the true spirit of Christmas, than getting the whole family involved in this parish-wide community event.

We will break into groups, and go “door to door” collecting food for our Christmas Food boxes.  Our goal this year is to service 90 families, which would be a parish record!

We are going to need LOTS of food, so please come help.  We will meet under the carport for donuts, as we prepare to hit the streets!

St. Stephen’s Lunch Program

Making a difference one lunch at a time

8th grade contributed 166 lunches on Tuesday, as well as 20 extra sandwiches and homemade oatmeal banana muffins. Thank you 8th grade for such a strong showing! This ends “Round 1.” Each class has now participated in the St. Michael’s Lunch Program. So far Madeleine has sent 1,973 lunches that have been shared with our friends at Pioneer Square and delivered to Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter. Great job!

Special School Visitors

This week Madeleine students had some very special visitors named Fezzik, Tutu, Galaghaer and Lydia. The Third graders just finished reading Star in the Storm about a girl named Maggie and her special dog Sirius, a Newfoundland. Our furry friends made quite an impression not only the third graders, but also the entire school.

5th Grade Participates in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

On Halloween, in addition to scouting the neighborhood for candy, the 5th grade class participated in a service project to raise money to help children in need. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF empowers U.S. children to become global citizens through assisting children around the world who have been stricken by hunger, disease, natural disasters, or war.

The 5th grade class far exceeded their personal goal of $50 and raised a total of $84.37. This money will help provide vaccinations, food, and clean water to those who need it most. What a compassionate, caring, and thoughtful class to dedicate some of their Halloween evening to serving others,

November 22 ~ Christ the King ~ John 18:33b-37

In today’s gospel, Pilate asks Jesus if Jesus is the King of the Jews. Jesus says that His Kingdom is not of this world.

What do you know about the Kingdom of Jesus? How do people act in the Kingdom? What do they do or say?  Pilate didn’t understand what Jesus was telling him. What could you have said to Pilate to help him understand Jesus better? How can you explain the Kingdom of Jesus to people who might not know or care about Jesus?

Thanksgiving Day Mass

Please join us at 9:00 am

Take some time giving thanks, as you start your busy Thanksgiving Day. Bring the bread (or rolls) and a bottle of wine (or non-alcohol beverage) that will be used at your Thanksgiving table to be blessed during the Mass.

This also is the day we change out our Breaking Bread hymnals and take down the banners with the names of the deceased and begin to put up our Advent banners and hangings. All these tasks can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Please plan to stay and help if you can.

Thanksgiving Collection: St. Vincent de Paul

As is traditional at The Madeleine, the entire Thanksgiving Day Mass collection goes to support the vital works of St. Vincent de Paul, to further their ability to help those with special needs to maintain their homes in a stable environment. The Madeleine community has always been very generous in supporting this ministry, and we know you will be again this year. You will find special collection envelopes in the pews this weekend. Please be generous.

You are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food and toiletries to Church this day and bring them forward at the time of the collection for the St. Vincent de Paul annual Food Drive.

Baked goods for Madeleine Marketplace

It’s less than a couple weeks until The Madeleine Marketplace! If you like to bake, please consider baking some extra of your favorites for our Bake Sale! Just bring your goodies to the Fireside Room by 10:00 am on Thursday, December 3.
