February 4, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This was a wonderful week. I can tell because I am exhausted in a good way. Catholic Schools Week and Open House are two important events and when they fall in the same week, things get busy.

The main feeling I have, aside from the exhaustion, is GRATITUDE. We could not have done it without the stellar assistance of our Madeleine community. Many thanks to Julie Baldwin for contacting parents to tell the Madeleine story at the Prospective Parent Night and to take parents around for tours on Tuesday. Kudos to Stephanie Savage who spoke to the Monday night group and shared her experience of choosing our school for Owen. She was a one-person recruiting machine. Everyone said she touched their hearts. In addition, our hospitality crew of Marni Campbell and Evelyn Bian provided food and beverages to the guests on both days under the direction of Jonas Allen, our Parents Club President.

Speaking of food….. the Madeleine staff cannot begin to thank Kristin Rios and her fabulous volunteers for sending in delicious food for the staff throughout the week. There was lasagna, minestrone soup, garlic bread, salad, beverages, muffins, granola, cookies, King Cake, Portland coffee cake, donuts, donuts, and more donuts. Talk about a sugar high!  We are so grateful to everyone who made the week so special. At Mass this afternoon, Father Mike reminded us that the most important thing we can say is “Thank you.” How appropriate to say that this week. And so thank you, thank you, thank you.

The festivities will continue on Sunday, when we will celebrate the end of Catholic Schools Week at the 10:00 Mass. Please make every effort to join the school community as we give thanks for Catholic education. Details can be found below.

     Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

open houseOpen House:Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered time for the Open House events this week. Whether you talked to prospective parents at Information Night, gave tours or helped with refreshments, you helped make a difference in our efforts to reach out to all the families looking forward to sending their kids to Madeleine next year. We had a strong turnout of over 60 families looking at everything from Kindergarten to Middle School, so thank you for all your efforts!

Counselor Column

by Carolyn Ullman

One of the most complicated issues with ADHD and children is that it presents differently in every child. There are some strong tendencies that we can accommodate in school and at home, but presentation is constantly changing. What works one day may not work the next and it requires diligence and patience.  That also applies to treatment.  There are many theories, practices and therapies out there and it is the parent’s job, with support from the school and the family pediatrician, to find the one that best suits your child.

Thomas Edison High School is providing a lecture and discussion by Dr. Tanya Hudson, addressing one complimentary therapy for ADHD.  I am letting you all know so that you can make plans to attend.  If you cannot attend, I am expecting to be there and I will pick up any information I can.

Shelter Animal Donation Driveanimals

It’s that time of the year to show the shelter animals some love. The Learning Loft is collecting Valentine donations for the homeless animals at the Multnomah County Animal Shelter. Animals in shelters are lonely and often scared while they wait for their forever homes.  You can show you care by bringing in items from the Wish List.

Please leave donations outside the Learning Loft, next to the 6th grade classroom. All donations need to be in by Friday, February 19.

THANK YOU! The shelter animals will appreciate it so much!

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Mrs. Schneider’s Kindergarten class did it again. They came in with 321 lunches! Thank you Kindergarten families for supporting Portland’s homeless during this cold and wet time of year. You are averaging approximately 13 lunches per student!

Also, a big thank you to all the families who are donating mustard and mayonnaise packets. If you would like to donate the unused packets in your kitchen drawer at home, please just put the packets in a ziplock bag, and we will make sure they go to the right place. Or if you would like to buy bulk, you can purchase them at Cash and Carry at 731 SE Stephens Street (unfortunately Costco no longer carries them).

How to schedule a home fire safety check

Ever wonder exactly how many smoke detectors you really need and where to put them? Did you know that the Portland Fire & Rescue Department will come to your house for free and conduct a fire safety check and answer these kinds of questions?

This is just one of the great things we learned last week when the Portland Fire & Rescue Public Education Officer and Firefighters from Station 13 came to Madeleine to teach us about home fire prevention and safety. The home safety checks are usually scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you are interested in scheduling a home fire safety check with Portland Fire & Rescue, please contact either Trudy Salsbury at 503-849-5696 or Eric Heard at 503-823-3700.

Thank you to Juliana Weis for passing along the details for scheduling this amazing free service!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

February 7 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Luke 5:1-11

Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Peter and told him to move to a new spot and put the nets in the water. Peter did as Jesus asked and, lo and behold, they caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. Why do you think they caught fish in the new spot after they had fished all night without catching anything? What does it mean to be fishers of men? What have you told people that might make you a fisher of men?

The event, “Catch the Reading Wave,” is free and open to the public. The event will be hosted by Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education. Every child attending will receive a free book of their choosing. The fair’s theme is designed to be an integrated approach to literacy that will engage students from pre-kindergarten to middle school. Kid-friendly activities offered throughout the day will include arts, crafts, and game, all designed with literacy and fun in mind. Local school principals will perform read-a-louds as well. The Reading Fair is a great way to get children involved in literacy while having lots of fun!

Sign-Up for Lenten Faith Sharing Groups

Sign up after Masses or at www.themadeleine.edu/groups

Our world-famous and uber-popular Faith Sharing Groups are preparing to launch the first week of Lent. We’re having sign-ups after Mass this weekend and next, and online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups.
Faith Sharing Groups give you the opportunity to meet fellow parishioners in small groups, to discuss upcoming Mass readings with the help of an easy to use guide, and most importantly, to take just an hour each week to focus on the wonderful invitation from God to be in deeper relationship. Groups meet at many different times, days and locations—so it will be easy for you to make the time in your schedule (we’re providing child care for some meetings as well). Please sign up after Mass, online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups, or call the parish office.

PDXCatholicTots February Events

PDXCatholicTots Dads Night Out

Fair Trade Chocolate Sale

Sales after Masses the weekend of February 6 and 7 • Sponsored by the Peace & Justice Committee

The Peace and Justice Committee is hosting a Fair Trade Chocolate sale after all Masses the weekend of February 6–7. We will be offering Divine Chocolate through SERRV, a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide.

Cocoa farmers in Ghana are part of a cooperative that has a stake in Divine Chocolate Limited, the first farmer-owned chocolate company in the world. Through this partnership, they participate directly in decision making, share in profits and receive above-market Fair Trade premiums for their cocoa beans. These profits are used to fund community development projects.

We hope that you will take advantage of great prices for Divine Chocolate, just in time for Valentine’s Day! By doing so, you will help to improve the lives of the cocoa farmers and affirm our Catholic social teaching—the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
