Editor's Note:

We hope Friday Footnotes makes it easier for you to keep track of school events, volunteer opportunities and all things Madeleine-related. The main section below contains Susan's weekly column, "Five for Friday" for quick reference, and short articles about everything going on around Madeleine.

The right-hand column includes five useful sections:

1) a printable summary of upcoming events and deadlines
2) links to regularly used web pages and forms
3) deadlines and events to remember for the current week
4) a look ahead to important upcoming items that should go on your calendar
5) a list of archived issues of Friday Footnotes, so you always have access to information published previously

If you would like to contribute to Friday Footnotes, please send the copy in a Word document exactly as you would like it to appear to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. The deadline is Wednesday at 5pm or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It was great to see all of you last night at our Back to School Night. I heard from many people that there is such a wonderful spirit of enthusiasm, openness, and expectation for the coming year. (Maybe we should start Back to School Night at 6:00 pm so that parents can “socialize” for an hour before the meeting. The atrium was filled with such happy chatter that I felt bad about asking everyone to sit down so we could begin the evening.) I particularly enjoyed Jonas Allen’s creative presentation, complete with visual aids. His eagerness may just bring a few more folks to our monthly Parent Club meetings. Also, a big thank to Alyssa and Kristin for the Auction information via PowerPoint.  Bollywood promises to be a fun, fabulous event.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to support your children and their teachers. School events, such as BTS night, serve more than just one purpose. Teachers definitely want to share their goals and objectives for the year, but we also want to build a partnership where home and school work together to nurture the growth of the whole child. That is our mission. That is why we are here—to help students grow spiritually, academically, morally, socially, and physically. Thank you for entrusting your children to The Madeleine School.

I want to thank Angela and all the staff for “holding down the fort” last week when I was immersed in wedding and family festivities. Things went so smoothly, I should take a few days off each week, right?

I hope you have a great weekend planned. I will be heading down to our vineyard for the first weekend of harvest. This season has produced an abundance of fruit, so I might need those days off anyway to help with the harvest. Enjoy these glorious days of fall.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Playground Repairs Complete!

The barriers and caution tape have been removed, and the playground is now available for use!  We appreciate your patience through this playground repair process.

The contractor stated that we may see bits of the material come loose in the first few weeks, which is normal. However, if you see anything at all like before (a tear in the top layer), please immediately contact James Wurzer (Madeleine Business Manager) at jwurzer@themadeleine.edu.

Christmas Tree Rock"Flash Sale" Fundraiser: Gift Wrap

September 18th - October 5th

For two weeks only, Parents Club is bringing back the Gift Wrap Sale fundraiser. "But wait, it's only September?!" True, but the timing ensures we'll have our orders delivered around Thanksgiving.

Today's Friday Folders contain an Innisbrook packet with a catalog of available gift wrap and gift bags, a list of sales incentives, and an order form. Families with multiple children will receive one order form per child so we can reward individual sellers (packets will be in the oldest child's Friday Folder). With everyone's sales efforts we hope to raise $5,000 in just two short weeks!

Order forms are due back at school on Oct. 5. If you have any questions, please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com

Hot Lunch Spotlight: Did you know???

Nora's kitchen is cranking out hot lunches and BIG smiles for our kids. Here are a few things you might not know…

Where is the food purchased?

Nora primarily shops at New Seasons, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Costco. She scours the sale ads in the newspaper weekly for sales and then hits the stores. Nora stands firm against ordering from wholesalers as she wants to control the quality of product coming into her kitchen. Her motto is…"If it's not good enough for my kids at home, then it's not good enough for my Madeleine kids!”

What about the meat?

Nora always buys kosher chicken. If she can find organic, hormone free chicken or beef on sale, she loads up! She loves Whole Foods hormone free ground beef sales (take note)! She makes the trip to Costco because they have the best quality all-white meat, hormone free chicken nuggets.

Housemade/Homemade…it's all delicious!

Nora makes all of the soups and sauces herself. The kids LOVE her chicken noodle soup. She says nothing warms her heart more than when the kids take the first bite, and a smile comes across their face.

Buying Fresh

You may notice on the menus a side dish may not be spelled out in detail. This is because Nora likes to wait to see what she can buy fresh that week. She has to plan the menu a month in advance due to software constraints, however she wants to keep it flexible if she can find a good organic or produce sale and work in the freshest items possible.

What is the most popular menu item?

BRUNCH FOR LUNCH! And did you know that along with waffles and sausage, Nora always adds an egg strata dish with fresh vegetables.

Menu Ideas??

If you have menu ideas that are a hit at your house…PLEASE send your idea to Nora at nbalsz@themadeleine.edu. She wants to hear what your kids love to eat. Cooking is her ministry, and she feels like this is the best way for her to reach the heart of all the kids at Madeleine.

We are SO LUCKY to have Nora in our Madeleine Family! Please stop by and say hello…it would make her day!

ORDERING FOR OCTOBER IS NOW OPEN UNTIL SEPTEMBER 24th!

It couldn't be easier!  Go to www.orderlunches.com and pick the lunches your child wants for the month of October.

Madeleine Designates Space for the Monarchs

Congratulations!  The Madeleine Garden and Wildlife Habitat (the strip along 24th that edges the parking lot next to the Field of Dreams) is now on the international registry of Monarch Waystations.

Once common, we have lost 90% of Monarch butterflies since the 1990s due to human development and widespread use of herbicides and pesticides.  Waystations such as ours provide milkweed, nectar plants, and shelter essential to the Monarchs' survival.

How can you help the butterflies?

Hard Work by Parents Pays Off for Our Students!

Many thanks to our school parents for all your volunteer hours last year, which helped to raise $213,000 to support art, music and other great programs at Madeleine.

Shopping Online? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine School!

AMAZON

The Madeleine's new program to earn money from Amazon purchases has gotten off to a solid start.

This fall as you shop for Halloween costumes and decorations, birthdays, and Prime memberships, please continue using the Madeleine's Amazon link. It doesn't cost you a single cent more, and the School earns "free money" each time you buy using the links on http://www.themadeleine.edu/amazon.

Annual Asbestos Notification

Many years ago all of the Archdiocesan properties (schools, churches, buildings, etc.) were inspected for asbestos. Any asbestos that was found was removed or encapsulated. Twice a year all buildings, including those at Madeleine, are inspected to be sure that any encapsulation is intact and there is no danger to the people in the building. In addition we are required to send out a letter each year, with details of the abatement program. Click here to read that letter.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

September 20 ~ 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 9:30-37

In the Gospel today we see Jesus and his disciples journeying through Galilee. Jesus is again telling of his coming passion and resurrection but the disciples do not understand. The disciples begin arguing about who is greatest among them. Jesus tells them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” This teaching tells us about behavior and attitude. We offer our efforts in the service of others to make life better for them in some way.

Why do you think Jesus had to tell his disciples about service? What are some ways we can offer service to others? Make a plan with your family to participate in some kind of service to others this year.
