A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It seems we are all getting into the routine of another school year. Fewer lunches, forgotten backpacks, late homework, etc. are showing up at the school office. It has taken me a bit of adjusting, too. I guess I just did not want to give up the summer mentality I have been operating with. But change is good and it is going to happen anyway, so as they say, “Get with the program.”

We have been asked to help our parish St. Vincent de Paul society with a short food drive. St. Vincent’s feast day is Sept. 26th so we will kick off the drive on Monday, Sept.28th and end on Friday, Oct. 2nd. The group would be so happy if we could help restock their pantry with non-perishable food items to help families who are having a rough time. Please participate by sending in canned goods, packaged or boxed food items next week. Thank you in advance for your generous support.

Two extra things are coming home today in the Friday Folders. All students are covered by an Archdiocesan policy that covers injuries during school hours. The flyer has all the details of the plan. We are also sending home the Student Directory, one per family. Please remember that the information provided is for your personal use. Information should not be used for any commercial enterprise. Please do not share this to promote business contacts.

It promises to be another glorious weekend. Enjoy.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Christmas Tree RockFinal Week for Gift Wrap Fundraiser

Deadline = October 5th

The “flash sale” Gift Wrap fundraiser has been a hit so far, so let’s finish strong in its last full week.

Thank you to all the families who have already filled-up their first order form and returned it to their teacher. The kids are doing such a great job selling that we need to hand out Minion keychains on four different days rather than two. Great work! If your kids want to make a run at even bigger prizes, extra order forms are now available in the front office; just ask Angela.

Final forms are due Monday, October 5th, so there’s still time to push us closer to (or past!) the $5,000 fundraising goal. Again, thank you for the incredible showing so far.

If you have any questions, please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com.

St. Michael's Lunch Program Morphs Into St. Stephen’s Lunch Program

Throughout the year we ask all the students to participate in our school-wide service project, which provides lunches to Portland's homeless. One class each week is designated to bring in bagged lunches, which we then deliver to a local parish.

This year our school-wide service project fondly known as “St. Michael’s Lunches,” will change a bit due to a big remodel at St. Michael’s Church that prevents them from accepting our lunches.

This year we will partner with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and HOMEpdx, which work to feed the homeless in downtown Portland. You can learn more at www.homepdx.net.

With this change, please note a few new tips for the lunches you make:

A big thank you to our seventh graders for bringing in 77 lunches this week to start off our new partnership!

Bring On Your Well Wishes for Barbara Vague

Barbara Vague unexpectedly retired this summer. If your family has been touched by Barbara's kindness and unending dedication to the success of all learners, we have an opportunity for you to thank her. Please bring your cards and well wishes to the office by Friday, October 2 so they can be included in a gift basket at her retirement party.

familyFamily Faith Sharing

September 27 ~ 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 9:39-43, 45, 47-48

When Jesus’ disciples tell him that they saw someone using his name to cast out demons and they tried to stop him because he was not part of their group, Jesus tells them not to worry because someone who does great things in his name cannot be his enemy. He says ‘whoever is not against us is for us.’ Jesus also tells them that anyone who does something nice for them because they are his followers will be rewarded

because of it. But anyone who causes one of his followers, especially children, to sin, will be severely punished. Jesus warns the disciples to get rid of anything in their lives that causes them to sin. He uses dramatic examples, like cutting off a hand or foot, to show that sometimes the things we need to get out of our lives can seem to be very important and necessary for us.

Jesus’ words today can teach us about our friendships. What did he mean by the words ‘whoever is not against us is for us’? How are we rewarded (or punished) for the way we treat others? You may have a friend who wants you to do things you know are wrong. What does Jesus say you should do?
