April 15, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents,

Since Susan is at a principals' meeting today, she wanted me to use her column to introduce our new, online(!) volunteer log system and remind you that your 30 volunteer hours for the year need to be recorded by Saturday, May 28.

If you do not have 30 volunteer hours, don’t panic! There are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer (please see the rest of the Footnotes for more details) including:

New Online Volunteer Log System

Whew! Plenty to do before the end of May. Now the next step is to create an account in our new system, Helpcounter.Net. I think you will find this system very helpful, especially for next year. We will be able to send you monthly reports with your hours worked, there will be a list of upcoming opportunities, and if you are a volunteer coordinator for an event, you will get emails when people sign up to help. Here are the steps to take to create your account:

Thank you all again for the work you do for our school. Your gift of time, your most precious resource, is truly appreciated and really makes a huge difference in the quantity and quality of opportunities for our kids at the school.

Have a great sunny weekend, and don’t forget to bring your E-Waste to the recycling event this Sunday at the Parish Hall.

                                                                     Sincerely, Lynn

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunch

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Mrs. Langhus’ class did an amazing job this week. They brought in 330 lunches. Thank you first grade for making a big difference in people’s lives.

With our weekly numbers being so strong, in addition to helping homeless youth downtown, our lunches are now also helping Operation Nightwatch. Each Tuesday evening St. Stephens opens their doors for a few hours, offering a warm safe place for the homeless that were unable to get into shelters for the evening to have a bite to eat, watch movies, play games and have conversation. The homeless population also suffer from social isolation, and Operation Nightwatch is a program that reaches out to our friends and offers a nurturing relationship.

Family Faith Sharing

April 17 ~ Fourth Sunday of Easter ~ John 10:27 - 30

Today we hear Jesus speak of himself as a shepherd and his followers as the sheep of his flock. We hear His voice, we follow Him and we feel safe in His hand. God is with us in the good times and in the bad times. We are never alone. Have you ever felt alone? Knowing that Jesus promises to never leave us, how does that make you feel? Sometimes it is hard to hear God’s voice. How do we recognize and listen to God’s voice?

April is Autism Awareness Month

The Archdiocese Office of People with Disabilities wants to bring to everyone’s attention that April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a serious, life-long, neurological developmental disability that ranges from mild to severe along a wide spectrum of possibilities.

Usually diagnosed before age three, people with Autism often have difficulties with language, with relating to others socially, and may engage in repetitive or restricted patterns of behavior.

1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) is diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Every parish community has many autism-affected families, whether you know it or not. For more information, visit www.autism-society.org or www.autismspeaks.org

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
