April 8, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents,

The Easter Season is a time of hope and resurrection. During the Easter Season, we reflect upon how we are called to be hope for others; and through service we can bring new life to those in need.

In support of these ideas, next week we will begin a service project to support Heifer International. This is a nonprofit organization working to end world hunger by giving cows, goats and other income producing animals to impoverished families around the world. Families are educated and trained on how to properly care for their animal and commit to giving its first off-spring to another family in need. Students will be learning how the gift of an animal can change the economic reality for a poor family. This aligns with our call to care for the needs of other people, honor diversity, and commit to justice through service.

Students will have an opportunity to participate in raising money to purchase the gift of animals for people in need around the world. The change drive will be next week, April 11th through 15th. Your child will receive a button for each day he/she participates in the change drive. Please help your child remember to bring the following denominations on the following days:

Monday = Dimes for Ducks

Tuesday = Silver for Sheep (nickels, dimes, quarters)

Wednesday = Change for Chicks (any coins)

Thursday = Paper for Trees (dollar bills, or more?)

Friday = Bee Generous (whatever)

The primary purpose of this project is to teach compassion and generosity. Students best learn and understand generosity if they are truly giving something of their own. During the change drive we encourage parents to give students an opportunity to earn the money they give. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.

Faculty Changes

On another note……We are having a mini-baby boom here at The Madeleine. Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Hart-Ragsdale are expecting babies in the early fall. That is the good news! The bad news for us is that Mrs. Hart-Ragsdale has decided to stay home with her little ones and be a full-time mommy. Of course, that is good news for her family. More good news is that Mrs. Doran has agreed to teach full-time in 5th grade, so I do not have to find anyone to fill her spot. Mrs. Chambers will be on maternity leave for the first few weeks, but has promised to return to 6th grade after a little bonding time with the baby.

                                                   Have a great weekend,

                                                                                                                                                                   Susan

globalMulticultural Arts Festival is a Hit

Today the students spent most of the morning enjoying the results of many hours of hard work by Mrs. Galash to bring a multicultural arts festival to The Madeleine.

From dancing to singing to calligraphy and so much more . . . be sure to ask your child about his or her favorite performance! Many, many thanks to Mrs Galash for bringing such an enriching experience to our students!

Cow, Milk, Farming, Animal,Heifer Project Starts Monday

April 11 - 15

The Heifer Project raises money for Heifer International to help people in need around the world. Heifer gives families animals from which they can earn an income. For example, a family with a cow can milk the cow and sell the milk in their community for added income. When a family accepts an animal from Heifer, they also agree to give the first offspring to another family in need. So in other words, your gift of an animal is a gift that keeps on giving.

Here are the details:

- Starting Monday from April 11th-15th

- Each day will have a different pin and type of money that earns the pins

   - Monday = Dimes for Ducks

   - Tuesday = Silver for Sheep

   - Wednesday = Change for Chicks

   - Thursday = Paper for Trees

   - Friday = Bee Generous

- On Friday if you have all the pins you will get a Heifer Project pencil

- You will also be able to buy the other types of pins on Friday.

Have a good week and don't forget to earn your pins!

Family Faith Sharing

April 10 ~ Third Sunday of Easter ~ John 21:1 - 19

In today’s Gospel, several disciples find Jesus on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias after a night of trying to catch fish. Jesus fixes breakfast for his friends and then talks with Peter. Jesus asks him three times “Do you love me?” and three times Peter answers yes. Peter’s conviction to Jesus became stronger with each “yes.” How do you think Peter felt when Jesus kept asking him the same question? Jesus continues to ask each of us the same question. How can we today, answer yes to Jesus with the same conviction that Peter had that day?

April is Autism Awareness Month

The Archdiocese Office of People with Disabilities wants to bring to everyone’s attention that April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a serious, life-long, neurological developmental disability that ranges from mild to severe along a wide spectrum of possibilities.

Usually diagnosed before age three, people with Autism often have difficulties with language, with relating to others socially, and may engage in repetitive or restricted patterns of behavior.

1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) is diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Every parish community has many autism-affected families, whether you know it or not. For more information, visit www.autism-society.org or www.autismspeaks.org

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
