A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
When school opened in September, we were sorry to announce that Barbara Vague unexpectedly retired over the summer. Barbara was with us for nine years and was responsible for the growth of our resource room programs. She was truly an advocate for the students she worked with and wanted to be sure they were afforded every opportunity to succeed. I was quite concerned that it would be very difficult to find someone to follow in her footsteps. Well, as usual, the Holy Spirit answered our prayers. Not only did he send us a wonderful teacher, but one who worked with Barbara and was very knowledgeable about the program Barbara developed. She gave her “two thumbs up” when I told her the applicant’s name. So without further ado, I am so pleased to introduce Andy Stephens, our new Learning Specialist.
Sincerely,
Susan
My name is Andy Stephens. I am delighted to be joining the staff as the Learning Specialist. I have been teaching since 2003, both as a classroom teacher and as a specialist. In all my time teaching, I am most thankful for the chance to work with students as they gain confidence, skills, and strategies. I am inspired by the magic that students create as they learn!
I moved to Portland to attend the University of Portland for my undergraduate degree... and I stayed! I liked it so much that I went back to UP for my graduate programs in Education and Special Education. My family has been parishioners at the Madeleine for many years, so it feels like coming home to be working here.
My husband and I have two darling baby girls, 18 months and 3 months, so we spend lots of time giggling, singing, dancing, reading, and changing diapers. If you see us at church, please stop and say Hi!!

St. Stephen’s Lunch Program
Making a difference one lunch at a time
The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, 7th Grade brought in 126 lunches, which brought us to well over the 2000 lunch mark in just 10 weeks. St. Stephen’s Parish is always so amazed at everyone’s commitment to the lunch program. Thank You 7th Grade!
And then, with everyone still getting back into the swing of the school schedule after our Thanksgiving vacation, Madeleine rocked Giving Tuesday earlier this week by breaking our previous record of 409 lunches made and given away to Portland’s homeless in a single day.
In honor of Giving Tuesday, Madeleine’s students, faculty and staff pulled together in the spirit of the season of giving and smashed the previous record by making 640 lunches!
A message from Tiffany and Reid Cooper, our parent volunteer liaisons to St. Stephen’s
Reid and I really do have the best volunteer job at Madeleine! We delivered the 640 lunches all across downtown to four organizations that not only thanked you all, but wanted me to let you know what a REAL difference each lunch makes.
This month in particular the shelters are full. We dropped off 200 lunches to the Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter (SAFE), and it was filled with women waiting for us to arrive.
We then gave 125 lunches to both Portland State’s Newman House and SAFE’s second location that helps women with children. At SAFE’s second location the cook could not come in on Tuesday due to strep throat, so the look of relief on the director’s face was a sight to see.
The rest of the lunches were delivered to St. Stephen’s to be handed out Tuesday night to those in need at Pioneer Square.
Also, the donated meat will be used for St. Stephen’s Chili Tuesdays. And, finally, the additional turkey, bananas, muffins, fruit cups, cookies, and dried beans were used immediately to give to a family who asked for an “Emergency Food Box.”
Thank you to everyone for bringing not only food to the hungry and homeless living on Portland’s streets, but also the spirit of caring!
Thank You, Caryn Fiedler, for Making our First Annual "Giving Tuesday" Event a Huge Success!
One of my favorite sayings is, "Ideas don't move mountains, bulldozers do." In essence this means many people have great ideas, but very few people have the self-discipline and perseverance to implement their vision. Without Caryn, Giving Tuesday would have come and gone as just another great idea. Thank you Caryn for all of your hard work on this event and everything to do for The Madeleine School!

Paddle Raise Funds Our Mad Musicians
As you know by now, our generous auction guests set a new record when $89,300 in restricted funds were raised for the Mad Science + Arts Wing. Thank you to everyone who raised his or her paddle high and contributed to the fabulous expansion of our science, technology and arts programs.
This week we are focusing on the new music equipment that will be available to our Mad musicians. Cynthia Bjore, Madeleine’s wonderful Music Teacher, says she is “so excited to have more instruments. A full set of instruments will make music theory so much clearer, especially for ‘hands on learners’.” Here are some highlights of what will be added to the music room in the coming months:
- 30 violins
- 30 ukuleles
- 30 simple keyboards
- 2 sets of Boomwhackers
- 1 set of small percussive instruments
Check out an upcoming issue of Friday Footnotes to learn about the cool tech toys being bought with your paddle raise donations.

Thank You to Cheri Krebs!
Hats off and thank you to Cheri Krebs, our intrepid lead volunteer for the Book Fair, which is the primary source of funding to replenish the school library with new reading material. For each dollar you spend at the book fair, our school receives 50% back. We really appreciate your work on the Book Fair and all the great new books that help maintain our kids' love of reading!
Stay tuned for final book fair results for you next week.
Present Pass
December 14th
The Present Pass is a fun tradition that we look forward to every year! On Monday, December 14th, the friendship families will get together after assembly. Everyone should bring a small gift (from $1 to $5), preferably one that kids of all ages/genders will enjoy. The eighth graders will bring a short Christmas book, and choose a certain word that appears often in the book. They will read the book to their friendship family, and whenever that word appears, everyone will pass their presents around the circle. When the story is done, the kids will get to keep the present they end up with. We hope everyone has fun!

Amazon + Holiday Shopping = Madeleine Money!
CyberMonday may be over, but you probably still have more holiday shopping to do. If Amazon is your destination, please remember to use The Madeleine's Amazon link. Doing so doesn't cost any extra, and the School earns money on every purchase!
Since the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, the School has earned more than $400 on Amazon commissions -- more than $122 in November alone. So before you shop on Amazon -- all holiday season and beyond -- please go to http://www.themadeleine.edu/amazon.
You can even double-dip by buying your Amazon scrip cards at the School and then using that credit to make purchases!

A Seasonal Work of Mercy
Scarf Drive: December 5 - 13
No one should suffer from the cold. And while the problem may be much bigger, and more complicated than a couple cold winter months, perhaps a simple work of mercy would be enough to warm a heart.
Take a moment to write a spiritual message of hope. Whatever that may be. A poem, a personal message - whatever feels inspirational ... and sign your first name. Then, go to your closet and pull out a scarf you are willing to part with. Attach the note to the scarf and bring to Mass or school.
Once collected, a group of volunteers will take them to various locations in downtown Portland and tie them around trees for the homeless to take as they need.
Your gift will also raise people’s awareness and motivate others to reach out and do something for those in need this holiday season. There is something quite magical about seeing dozens of scarves tied to trees with people’s messages of love on them.
Please bring your scarves to Mass this weekend (December 5 or 6) or next weekend (December 12 or 13). We’ll have baskets in the church lobby to collect your scarves. Students can also bring their scarves to school on Friday, December 11.

5th Grade Goes to BizTown
5th grade got a small taste of life in the "real world" this week as they participated in a program by Junior Achievement called JA BizTown.
Students have been learning what it means to be a citizen in a community from their rights and responsibilities, to having a job and paying taxes. In BizTown, students each had a job for a day helping to run a successful business, received a paycheck, and budgeted their money to buy items of their choosing from food to toys to donating to non-profit organizations.
5th graders took on their various roles within their businesses with pride as they learned that working all day is exhausting!
Family Faith Sharing
December 6 ~ Second Sunday of Advent ~ Luke 3:1-6
God spoke to a man named John who was living in the desert. After hearing God’s Word, John went around the whole area of Jordan telling people to turn away from sin and prepare a path for Jesus to come into their hearts. Sin is like a roadblock on our path to God and can keep us from fully inviting Jesus into our hearts. Fortunately, we have a loving and merciful God who offers us forgiveness and healing from sin.
What are some things that are in the way of our path to God? What would you like Jesus to forgive in you? Who can you offer forgiveness to? Go to your parish penance service as a family this Advent!
