January 29, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In addition to preparing for Catholic Schools Week and our New Student Open House, we hosted our third grade class parents last Tuesday night to begin the discussion for next year’s auction. (Who put this crazy schedule together???) It has been our tradition to have the 4th grade class take a leadership role in organizing this annual signature event and so we need to begin in 3rd grade to find willing souls to develop and move the plans forward.

I am so happy to announce that once again the Holy Spirit has inspired four people to say yes to the call. I’m not sure they are comfortable with the term “Chairperson” yet, so let’s say they are the Leadership Team. Please give a round of applause to Lisa Colling, Matt Kohlbecker, Alisa Pyszka, and Andy Steiner. Along with a great support team, they will be making some key decisions for Auction 2016. Stay tuned for future news. And if you see them on the playground, please thank them for their generous offer of time and talent.

A Few Reminders

Safety Issues

If you park on 24th for morning drop-off, please walk your children to the corner crosswalk instead of darting across the street. We almost had a child hit this week from a southbound car, as the child ran across 24th. Please be safe and take the time to walk your child in or drop off in the parking lot car line.

Speaking of the parking lot car line, logistics can get tricky during morning drop-off. To keep everything running smoothly during morning drop-off, please only use the south parking lot (closest to to the front door) if you are driving though the car line to drop your child off and s/he is walking into school on his/her own. If you are walking into the building with your child, please park in the north parking lot by the field. This distinction helps the flow of cars moving along in the morning when I know everyone is in a hurry to get to work and various appointments.

     Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

penniesPennies For The Poor: Kicks Off on Monday

February 1 - February 4

During Catholic Schools Week, Student Government is holding their annual Pennies for the Poor. During this event, classes compete to see how much money they can raise. Any silver coins (e.g. nickels, quarters) will lower the “score” of the class, while anything else (pennies, paper money, etc.) will raise the score. All money raised by all of the classes (silver or otherwise) will go to the Church of St. Andre Bessette. Have fun!

JOIN

Cool About Our School

Thanks for the Socks You Donated to JOIN

As you may recall, fourth grade took the initiative to organize a sock drive for JOIN, which is a local organization that helps people transition from homelessness to permanent housing. Many of you from across the whole school participated by donating socks to help people stay warm and dry during the cold winter months.

In their thank you letter to the school, the JOIN Deputy Director said “Your donations have a profound impact on the everyday lives of our friends sleeping outside.” Wow! Thank you to Julie Slavik and the fourth grade for organizing this giving opportunity.

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

First Graders Break the St. Stephens Lunch Record!

Nothing is more endearing than extremely proud first graders. And proud they should be. Mrs. Langus’ class created a new St. Stephens lunch record and made a total of 471 lunches and 12 extra sandwiches.  That is right 471 lunches (many even contained pairs of new socks)!  Not only did they nourish the hungry on Tuesday, they did it together. Each student participated, bringing in two lunches to up to (gasp!) one hundred and six. Thank you First Grade - for being so kind and helping so many.

fireFire Safety Presentation

Last night, Ron Rouse, Portland Fire & Rescue Public Education Officer and Firefighters from Station 13 came to Madeleine to teach us about home fire prevention and safetyAttendees learned how to develop a plan and prepare our family and home for any fire emergency. Here are a few key takeways for all of those unable to attend:

familyFamily Faith Sharing

January 31 ~ Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Luke 4:21-30

Again Luke talks about Jesus speaking in the synagogue, saying "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." The people were amazed at his powerful words, and they asked him to perform miracles for them. Jesus said: "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place," and then reminds them of two miracles performed by the Old Testament prophets, Elijah and Elisha. These miracles helped Gentiles, that is, people who weren’t Jews. When the people heard this, they became angry and drove him out of town. Do we accept Jesus’ teachings without questioning them? Explain your answer. Or do we expect miracles from Jesus before we really believe in Him? Why or why not?

Our world-famous and uber-popular Faith Sharing Groups are preparing to launch the first week of Lent. We’re having sign-ups after Mass this weekend and next, and online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups.
Faith Sharing Groups give you the opportunity to meet fellow parishioners in small groups, to discuss upcoming Mass readings with the help of an easy to use guide, and most importantly, to take just an hour each week to focus on the wonderful invitation from God to be in deeper relationship. Groups meet at many different times, days and locations—so it will be easy for you to make the time in your schedule (we’re providing child care for some meetings as well). Please sign up after Mass, online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups, or call the parish office.

Fair Trade Chocolate Sale

Sales after Masses the weekend of February 6 and 7 • Sponsored by the Peace & Justice Committee

The Peace and Justice Committee is hosting a Fair Trade Chocolate sale after all Masses the weekend of February 6–7. We will be offering Divine Chocolate through SERRV, a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide.

Cocoa farmers in Ghana are part of a cooperative that has a stake in Divine Chocolate Limited, the first farmer-owned chocolate company in the world. Through this partnership, they participate directly in decision making, share in profits and receive above-market Fair Trade premiums for their cocoa beans. These profits are used to fund community development projects.

We hope that you will take advantage of great prices for Divine Chocolate, just in time for Valentine’s Day! By doing so, you will help to improve the lives of the cocoa farmers and affirm our Catholic social teaching—the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
