January 22, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There are many events coming up on the calendar, so it seems like a good idea to “make a list” of those activities that affect you.

First, don’t forget to order hot lunch for the month of February! Window closes on the 24th.

Second, a big thank you to those who have returned their re-registration forms. Angela says we are about at 80% return. We need to know how many openings we have for next year as we move into…..

Open House! February 1st we will host an information night for prospective families and February 2nd we have tours from 10-1. So if you know of interested parents, please give them a call this weekend and spread the word.

Catholic Schools Week also begins on February 1st. We will have a number of fun activities planned including a morning coffee to thank our wonderful parent community and an invitation to have a taco lunch on Monday, February 1 with your student. If you would like to enjoy a lunch at school with your child, please click here to RSVP. There will be a complete schedule in next week’s Footnotes. However, our Sunday Catholic Schools 10:00 Mass has been moved to February 7th. My hope is that all of our students will be at the Mass, in uniform, to process in with their classmates and teacher. Our school community will have an active part in the liturgy as we thank our parish for their support and give thanks for the gift of Catholic education. Please put this Sunday event on your calendar.

Now back to next week. If you are a third grade parent, please plan on attending the auction meeting on Tuesday, January 26th in the library. We will have a social time beginning at 6:30, and then the meeting will begin at 7:00. There are some new ideas surfacing about the event so we need to hear everyone’s voice.

On Thursday the Parents Club is sponsoring a parent education night on Fire Safety. It promises to be interesting and informative, so please make an effort to come.

     Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

firePrioritize the Safety of Your Home and Loved Ones

January 28 @ 7pm in Parish Hall

Did you know.....
In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire.

Heat is more threatening than flames. A fire's heat alone can kill.

Homes burn faster now than they did 30 years ago, due to new building materials.

Residences have the greatest number of fire-related injuries and fatalities.

Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.

Join us for a FREE Home Fire Prevention and Safety Event with Ron Rouse, Portland Fire & Rescue, Public Education Officer and Firefighters from Station 13. Learn how to develop a plan and prepare your family and home for any fire emergency.

Bring your friends and neighbors. Beer, wine and cookies provided.

Spaghetti Dinner Taking the Year Off

If distance really does make the heart grow fonder, Madeleine families are going to love their all-you-can-eat pasta next year. The Spaghetti Dinner is sitting this season out, but the Parents Club hopes the annual FUNdraiser will come back strong in 2017 after a one-year hiatus.

In the meantime, if you're looking for ways to get those volunteer hours, consider reaching out to one of the following folks:

penniesPennies For The Poor: Start Saving Your Coins

February 1 - February 4

During Catholic Schools Week, Student Government is holding their annual Pennies for the Poor. During this event, classes compete to see how much money they can raise. Any silver coins (e.g. nickels, quarters) will lower the “score” of the class, while anything else (pennies, paper money, etc.) will raise the score. All money raised by all of the classes (silver or otherwise) will go to the Church of St. Andre Bessette. Have fun!

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time

The 2nd Grade came back from our three day weekend with gusto.  242 lunches! Sacks were decorated and filled with so many special treats to accompany their sandwiches. Second Grade’s thoughtfulness and mindfulness to each lunch truly symbolizes Madeleine’s commitment to the hungry.  Finally, a big thanks to Cormac A. He brought in 50 lunches all decorated with messages of love, peace and faith. Thank You!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

January 24 ~ Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

In today’s gospel passage from Luke, we learn that Jesus returned to Galilee (where he had grown up) and with the power of the Holy Spirit, began to teach in the Synagogues, and was praised by all. When he came to Nazareth, he went into the Synagogue and read from the scroll (or book) of the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, and to let the oppressed go free …” What are the “glad tidings” that Jesus brings to you? How can you share them with others?

Witnessing Christian unity in service

Reflection on the 2016 MLK Jr. Day of Service, last Monday

Inspired by Deacon Anthony’s homily last weekend on Christian unity and Deacon Mike’s urging in the bulletin, my family and I attended the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., service and packaging of food for hungry children at Maranatha Church on Monday, Jan. 18.

Bishop Remi De Roo Luncheon & Presentation

Monday, January 25 • RSVP after Masses or at www.themadeleine.edu/deroo

Retired Bishop of Victoria, British Columbia and Vatican II Council Father, Bishop Remi De Roo was present at all four sessions of the Council and he will be with us on Monday, January 25 at 11:00 am in the Fireside Room! Bishop Remi’s speaking engagements this year are in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. His presentation, Our Call to Conversion in Light of Vatican II and the Jubilee Year of Mercy, is a rare opportunity to hear personally about the Council’s aspirations and reflect on our ongoing call to conversion. A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP by signing up after Mass, calling or emailing the parish office, or online at www.themadeleine.edu/deroo.

Sign-Up for Lenten Faith Sharing Groups

Sign up after Masses or at www.themadeleine.edu/groups

Our world-famous and uber-popular Faith Sharing Groups are preparing to launch the first week of Lent. We’re having sign-ups after Mass this weekend and next, and online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups.
Faith Sharing Groups give you the opportunity to meet fellow parishioners in small groups, to discuss upcoming Mass readings with the help of an easy to use guide, and most importantly, to take just an hour each week to focus on the wonderful invitation from God to be in deeper relationship. Groups meet at many different times, days and locations—so it will be easy for you to make the time in your schedule (we’re providing child care for some meetings as well). Please sign up after Mass, online at www.themadeleine.edu/groups, or call the parish office.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
