March 11, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am sure you are looking forward to Spring Break as much as our teachers and staff. Even if it is just a “staycation” in Portland, it will be great to slow the pace down for ten days.

I was writing our Week’s Preview for the faculty and was feeling overwhelmed with all the activities coming up next week…. Talent Show, which includes rehearsals and performances, field trips to the Audubon Society and Real. Life. Exhibit, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the 8th grade Mass at the Cathedral with Archbishop Sample, the 6th grade Vocation Rally, School Advisory Council, end of the 2nd trimester, report cards, free dress day for Catholic Relief Services, and the 5th grade State Parade plus any classroom events that are not on the office calendar. I am exhausted in anticipation!

Seriously though, all these experiences are the things that your children will remember when they reminisce about their days at The Madeleine. Yes, their strong, rigorous academic curriculum will serve them well as they make their way in the world, but it is the field trips, performances, service projects, etc. that they will remember.  Hang in there—one more week.

     Have a great weekend.                                                                                                                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

artworkKids Kreations 2016

Deadline to order = April 1

It’s spring at The Madeleine, which means it’s time for Kids Kreations cards to make its new-season debut! Kids' Kreations cards feature artwork by our fabulous students, and they have been a mainstay at the school since 2005.

Kids Kreations was started as a way to celebrate each student's creativity combined with a fundraising activity as part of The Madeleine’s auction. This year marks Kids Kreations new place as a spring tradition.

Each child creates an original piece of artwork which is reproduced in color on high-quality notecards. A set of notecards includes 20 cards (5.5 x 4.25 inch) and envelopes for only $27.50. The inside of the cards are blank, so they are appropriate for any occasion.

Order your child's cards on the Kids Kreations website at www.themadeleine.edu/Kreations. The order deadline is April 1. Cards will go home with your child the first week of May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

penniesPennies for the Poor Totals Are In!

In first place we had 1st grade whose milk jug was literally overflowing with pennies. In a close second place was third grade thanks to the power of paper currency.

But, most importantly, we hope everyone had lots of fun while raising a grand total of a whopping $998 for the St. Andre Bessette's outreach program for the poor and marginalized in downtown. To learn more about how these funds will be used visit http://saintandrechurch.org/programs-volunteering/

Thank you!

worldBringing the World to Our School

An exciting new event is coming our way. The morning of Friday, April 8 is our first ever Multi-cultural Arts Festival. Rather than one or two lucky classes having the opportunity to go to the Art Museum or a performance, I want to bring the arts of the world to all Madeleine students. My vision is to have visual artists, musicians, and dancers from a variety of cultures share their art with the entire student body in a succession of short presentations. Additionally, I would like to feature art and handcrafts in visual displays.

If you or someone you know is an artist whose work reflects another culture and who would be interested in sharing/performing, or if you have artwork and handcrafts from another culture to contribute to the Visual Arts World Tour displays, please let me know. Additionally, if you would enjoy helping bring the Festival to life, contacting artists, setting up equipment, and displaying borrowed art, I would like to know that, too. Let’s show them the world!

Thank you in advance!

Communal Reconciliation this Sunday

Sunday, March 13 • 11:30 am

At your Baptism, God forgave all your sins. Afterward, whenever you fall, God extends an embrace of mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This year, we’re holding our Lenten Communal Reconciliation on Sunday after Mass in the hope that all parishioners will be able to attend. We will have additional priests available to hear your confessions. Please join us in this celebration of God’s mercy.

“I Was a Stranger and You Invited Me in”

"Suitcase Project" parish collection for refugees to begin during Masses, this weekend, March 12-13

Inspired by the Year of Mercy, parishioners of The Madeleine are collecting items for Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program.
Items on this list are desperately needed for refugees and their families as they move into their new homes and begin new lives. There will be two suitcases and a portable playpen located near the front entrance of the church for people to drop off the following items. Please donate only new (items you would buy for yourselves) or slightly used items.

Thank you, Tammy, for 11 years of faithful service to The Madeleine

As you may or may not have heard, Tammy Shadel, our longtime, beloved Parish Secretary will be leaving us next week, and taking a job much closer to her home and family in Oregon City. While a significant loss for us, it is a huge blessing for her in terms of reduced time commuting, and increased time enjoying her family.
