March 4, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I recently read a very informative article on raising resilient children. It defined resilience as “the ability to work with adversity in such a way that one comes through it unharmed or even better for the experience.” While most parents, myself included, do not want our children to have to face unpleasant situations, we know that no one goes through life without challenges. It was reassuring to read that we can build our capacity to recover from stress and adversity by facing life’s problems with courage and patience.

The article continued with ideas on how a school can promote resilience in children and also suggested that many of these points are applicable to home life. So while I am reading these in the context of The Madeleine, you might think about how you can support resilience in your child.  A few of the highlights…

I will conclude with a quote from the article that I thought was quite thought provoking. “Often adults (parents and teachers) try to spare children from suffering, disappointment, setback, failure, or sacrifice, but in doing so they rob children of the opportunity to develop a resilient character.” Food for thought.

On another note, be sure to check out the announcement below from Ida Galash about her wonderful idea for a Multi-cultural Arts Festival on April 8th. She's requesting some assistance to make it great for our students, so be sure to grab this opportunity for some volunteer hours!

     Have a great weekend.

                                                                                                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

Madeleine Got Talent!!!

It’s that time of year again! Talent show! Auditions are on March 10 after school around 3:25pm in the Parish Hall. A rehearsal will follow on March 17 in the Parish Hall. The following day, which is the day before Spring Break, will be the talent show.

The rules are the same as always: no lip syncing and your performance can’t be longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The performer has to provide their own CD or iPod. We have the CD player. Music must be Catholic school friendly and a copy of the lyrics must be provided at the audition.

It’s time to organize your act to participate in this year’s annual talent show!

worldBringing the World to Our School

An exciting new event is coming our way. The morning of Friday, April 8 is our first ever Multi-cultural Arts Festival. Rather than one or two lucky classes having the opportunity to go to the Art Museum or a performance, I want to bring the arts of the world to all Madeleine students. My vision is to have visual artists, musicians, and dancers from a variety of cultures share their art with the entire student body in a succession of short presentations. Additionally, I would like to feature art and handcrafts in visual displays.

If you or someone you know is an artist whose work reflects another culture and who would be interested in sharing/performing, or if you have artwork and handcrafts from another culture to contribute to the Visual Arts World Tour displays, please let me know. Additionally, if you would enjoy helping bring the Festival to life, contacting artists, setting up equipment, and displaying borrowed art, I would like to know that, too. Let’s show them the world!

Thank you in advance!

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

A big thank you to the 6th grade for bringing in 145 lunches this week! The last count showed almost 4,000 homeless men, women and children in Multnomah County, and experts estimate the actual number of people who are sleeping outdoors, in shelters, in their cars, in temporary transitional housing or on someone else’s couch may be four times that. These numbers are staggering and overwhelming, but as Mother Teresa expressed "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one." Thank you for your time and support to this cause.
