A Note from Susan
Dear Parents,
According to my calendar, we only have eight weeks of school left. Is that possible?? Doesn’t it seem that Christmas vacation was just a few weeks ago? The old adage of “time flies when you are having fun” certainly applies here.
Along with the eight remaining weeks come many deadlines that need to be met for the coming year. Reminders include:
- School Advisory Council is accepting nominations for three open positions for 3 year terms. Details are in today’s newsletter.
- Jogathon is coming up. I am hearing great reviews on our new, online way of gathering pledges. Details for setting up your child’s account can be found at http://themadeleine.edu/jogathon.
- Speaking of online sign ups…. Please be sure to record your volunteer hours on our new HelpCounter.Net, which can be found by clicking here. The deadline for completing volunteer hours has been extended to May 29 because of all the opportunities remaining in May. Unworked hours are billed at $20 each.
- Applications for tuition aid are still being accepted for the coming year. Click here for the link.
- If you have a grandparent or “special person” who is coming to our Grandparent Tea on May 12, please look for the official invitation next week and be sure to RSVP so that we are prepared.
Finally a big shout out to the Care for Creation Committee, who organized last week’s e-waste event. I know we are all so grateful that those monitors, toner cartridges, etc. did not end up in the landfill. Thanks to all the organizers and worker bees who helped out.
Have a great weekend,
Susan

Parish Hall Roof Repair Project Set to Begin April 25
The Parish Hall is about to get a new lid! While this means some inconvenience for the parish and the school over the next couple of weeks, the end result will be a Parish Hall, storage room, atrium, and school hallway that no longer leak.
The areas impacted most will be the parish hall/atrium area, however, when they are laying the tar roof, the smell will be noticeable in the gymnasium, the commons, and potentially other areas.
While the roofers are working on site, the gymnasium, commons and music room windows will remain closed. Parish Hall and Fireside Room events will be routed through the mud room doors near Kindergarten.
This project is scheduled now because this window is the least disruptive to calendared, contractual events scheduled in Parish Hall during the summer (think weddings and Haitian Garage Sale!), and it means the project will be complete for the start of the school year.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact The Madeleine Business Manager, James Wurzer, at jwurzer@themadeleine.edu.
Sign up Now for Hot Lunch in May
Sign ups are now open for hot lunches served during May. The deadline to sign up is April 24th.

Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Event Success
A huge “thank you” to Ed Hill, Shauna and Peter Mohr, Deborah Naugler, Libby North, John and Lynn Robinson, Angela Talbott, Sarah Thurston-Sullivan, and Kathrine and Erskine Williams. These hard-working volunteers collected, sorted and delivered double the amount of e-waste compared to last year! Just a few stats on how they helped save the planet last Sunday:
- 3 fully-loaded trucks of e-waste, including lawn mowers, several pallets of computers, a stove, a dishwasher, pallets and pallets of toxic electronics
- More batteries than anyone could count – it took 6 volunteers 7 hours to sort them all!
- 1,700 square feet of Styrofoam – that’s a 26 foot long U-Haul truck (ask Peter Mohr about “Styrofoam Tetris”)
- 5 barrels of florescent lights – over a thousand light bulbs
- 4 large boxes of athletic shoes
- $1,800 in donations collected
Introducing Madeleine School's New, Online Volunteer System
As you may recall, your 30 volunteer hours for the year need to be recorded by Saturday, May 29. This means that now is the perfect time to check out Madeleine School's new, online(!) volunteer system.
Create Your Account in 4 Easy Steps
- Click here to fill out the volunteer application.
- You will receive an email once “approved” by the school. This is basically Lynn Robinson “processing” your information.
- You will then receive an email where you can set up your user name and password for logging into the system. Then you will be able to see upcoming opportunities, sign up to help, and record new hours worked.
- When signing in for the first time, you will notice we transferred all hours worked from the old system. HOWEVER, all hours are recorded as “AUCTION” hours, on April 11, 2016. That is fine. The main concern is that you have 30 hours by May 28. Also, you will not be able to see the details of what you worked, just the hours. If you can’t remember what you did, just send Lynn Robinson an email, and sheI can look it up for you.
If you do not have 30 volunteer hours, don’t panic! There are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer including:
- Spring Garden Clean-Up, April 23, 9am to noon
- Art Show Help, May 2 and 6
- Book Fair, May 1 – May 6, various hours
- Grandparent’s Tea, May 12
- Jogathon, month of May and day of event, 5/27/16
- School Musical Help, May 25-27
- SAC and the Safety and Security Committee are looking for new members for 2016-2017
Questions? Just email Lynn Robinson at lrobinson@themadeleine.edu.
Thank you all again for the work you do for our school. Your gift of time, your most precious resource, is truly appreciated and really makes a huge difference in the quantity and quality of opportunities for our kids at the school.
Thank You!
Earlier this week, seven wonderful volunteers spent a beautiful, sunny morning indoors to help with the Annual Fund Campaign mailing to Madeleine alumni. The volunteers helped stuff, seal and stamp 1,100 letters in under two hours! This group effort is bound to yield great results and help us reach our goal of raising $25,000 in order to get a $25,000 match! Thank you to Charlotte Bliss, Yorman Daza, Molly Hunter, Naoko Krug, Susie McShane, Amy Ratigan, and Tessa Siegel.

Madeleine Safety & Security Committee Seeking New Members
Madeleine families have an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our school by joining the Safety & Security Committee. Volunteers are needed to serve on this important committee, which meets the first Wednesday evening of each month.
Over the past year the committee has developed a disaster preparedness plan for the school and parish. More remains to be done to fully implement the plan, to assure the safety and security of children and adults, both at school and in church, as well as at home. Click here to read the complete letter from Marc Gonzales, Chair of the Madeleine Safety & Security Committee.

Results: 5th Grade Bake Sale Raises $457
On Monday and Tuesday, 5th grade hosted a bake sale to raise money for the organization Prayasam, which helps some of the poorest children in Calcutta, India.
The bake sale was prompted by a challenge given by Father Mike to take $20, increase the value, and use the money to assist others. After careful debate, the class decided to host a bake sale in order to assist children in India. The $20 turned into a total of $457.40! This amount is about equal to an average annual salary and could purchase over 1,400 pounds of rice!
A special thanks to all of the students and parents who volunteered, baked, sold, and purchased items at the bake sale this week. We look forward to hearing about the impact our donation has on the children of India. What a wonderful gift from the community!
Spring Book Fair is Almost Here
Book Fair Volunteers Needed
Free Dress on Tuesday, May 3
Our Spring Book Fair will be opening on Sunday, May 1st. There are still a few spots available to help out. If you are interested in volunteering or if you want to be on the list for future book fairs please contact Cheri Krebs at krebs.cheri@gmail.com. The book fair counts towards your fundraising volunteer hours.
In addition, on Tuesday, May 3 we will have free dress for $2 to support the Portland Children's Book Bank. Children's Book Bank is a local organization that is dedicated to closing the "book gap" by getting new books into the hands of Portland area children who live in neighborhoods where the ratio of books to children is one book for every 300 hundred children. The funds raised will be used to buy books from our upcoming book fair to support their mission.
Grandparents' and Special Persons Tea
Thursday, May 12 @ 12:45pm
The Grandparents' and Special Persons Tea is set for Thursday, May 12 starting at 12:45pm. Keep an eye out for invitations next week!
This is such a popular event that seating is very limited. For this reason, we kindly request attendance by only grandparents and a student's special person. A Special Person may include a close family friend or a neighbor, but please no parents or siblings. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child.
We are looking forward to a fun afternoon with our Grandparents and Special Guests!!!
Cool About Our School
Sixth grader goes above and beyond
Sebastian, 6th grade, and his dad, Gregario, were the newest volunteers from The Madeleine School to do more for our St. Stephens Tuesday lunch partner by volunteering downtown with them on a recent weekend. Sebastian and his dad decided to help after Sebastian heard about volunteering from his classmate, Helena!
St. Stephens was so grateful, they featured him at the top of their weekly email newsletter. Way to go, Sebastian! Be sure to ask him about his experience and how your family can sign up to help.

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!
Once again the Kindergarten class brought in an amazing number of lunches. This time a whopping 366! I noticed many lunches included messages of hope and bright and cheerful images. These contributions to the hungry are so appreciated and teach our children that kindness counts.

Family Faith Sharing
April 24 ~ Fifth Sunday of Easter ~ John 13:31-33A, 34-35
In this Gospel we hear how Jesus wants us to love. Jesus says, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” How did Jesus show his love for us? Why is it hard, sometimes, for us to love others? When is it the hardest for you to follow this commandment? When we don’t follow this commandment what happens?
