December 11, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Merry Christmas! I want to wish everyone a very happy holiday…..Oh, wait a minute…..We still have one week to go! We can’t dismiss school until we have our Christmas Program, catch the Gingerbread Man, decorate Christmas cookies, do our Present Pass with our Friendship Family, bring a scarf to school for the homeless, build graham cracker gingerbread houses, fill the St. Vincent de Paul food baskets, and many more activities that mark the Christmas season.

A word about the K-5 Christmas Program this coming Thursday night. Children should be in their classrooms by 6:45. We will open the front door at 6:30. Students should wear “Sunday Best” clothes or their school uniform. Each class will perform and then all classes will sing the final song together. When the program is over, we will dismiss the children to their parents from the church. I know that has the potential for complete chaos, but let’s not let that happen! Also, when you drop off your children at their classrooms, please take their coats with you to the church.

Another thing to remember about next week is that our hot lunch program will not be operating. Nora, our wonderful cook, will be gone so students need to pack their lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Thursday Parent Club lunch day is a go, so if you signed up for Subway sandwiches, they will be here. Also, ordering for January lunches begins tomorrow, the 12th, and closes on the 24th. Life is going to get really busy in the next few weeks, so I advise you to order while you are thinking about it.

There will be a wonderful performance of Handel’s Messiah this Sunday at the Madeleine Church at 3pm. It is something you won’t want to miss. Details regarding time and tickets are below in the newsletter.

               Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

PS - There are four small, pastel dip dishes that have been left over ever since Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please come to the school office to claim them for your holiday entertaining needs!

presentsFriendship Family Present Pass

Monday, December 14th

The Present Pass is a fun tradition that we look forward to every year! On Monday, December 14th, the friendship families will get together to celebrate the season and exchange small gifts.

Everyone should bring a small gift (from $1 to $5), preferably one that kids of all ages/genders will enjoy. The eighth graders will bring a short Christmas book, and choose a certain word that appears often in the book. They will read the book to their friendship family, and whenever that word appears, everyone will pass their presents around the circle. When the story is done, the kids will get to keep the present they end up with. We hope everyone has fun!

Paddle Raise Funds Our Mad Technologists

As you know by now, our generous auction guests set a new record when $89,300 in restricted funds were raised for the Mad Science + Arts Wing. Thank you to everyone who raised his or her paddle high and contributed to the fabulous expansion of our science, technology and arts programs.

This week we are focusing on the new technology resources that will be available to our Mad technologists. Believe it or not, we actually have already purchased the the Little Bits Pro Library! And it was delivered on Monday!!bits

The Pro Library is the ultimate collection for collaboration and invention in a group setting. It can accommodate up to 32 inventors with 304 Bits, making it ideal for project-based learning and teamwork as well as intuitive electronics prototyping. It includes at least 4 of basically every Little Bit they make. The storage units are being installed this weekend in the computer lab, so be ready for creative, innovative, hands-on technology building projects happening in 2016!

Check out Friday Footnotes after the holidays to learn about the cool, new resources for the tech club being bought with your paddle raise donations.

Book Fair Results

Thank you to everyone who shopped at this year's Book Fair.  We reached total sales of $4103! Half of that amount will come back to the school to be used for new books and supplies.

We were also able to raise $427 through free dress and other donations to buy books for Portland Children's Book Bank. They will be receiving 98 new books from our school that will be given to children in Portland that otherwise would not have books at home.

Thank you again to Cheri Krebs for her Book Fair leadership!

pasta

Spaghetti Dinner Needs Chairpeople

Since we're between the big turkey and ham holidays, let's talk about pasta. Specifically, spaghetti. The school's Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser is scheduled for February, and we've already heard from 27 people interested in helping out. But this ambitious group of pasta-boiling, sauce-stirring, bread-buttering warriors needs some leaders. If you and a few of your friends are able to step up and chair this February FUNdraiser, please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com. We hope you're called to "serve."

Amazon + Holiday Shopping = Madeleine Money!

AMAZON

Last minute shopping? If Amazon is your destination, please remember to use The Madeleine's Amazon link. Doing so doesn't cost any extra, and the School earns money on every purchase!

Since the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, the School has earned more than $400 on Amazon commissions -- more than $122 in November alone. So before you shop on Amazon -- all holiday season and beyond -- please go to http://www.themadeleine.edu/amazon.

You can even double-dip by buying your Amazon scrip cards at the School and then using that credit to make purchases!

Your learning style has more influence on learning than you may realize. This preferred style guides the way you learn. It can also change the way you internally represent experiences, the way you recall information, and even the words you choose.  No particular style is fixed nor is there any magic combination.  However, most researchers agree that we all have preferences.

A Seasonal Work of Mercy

Scarf Drive: December 5 - 13

No one should suffer from the cold.  And while the problem may be much bigger, and more complicated than a couple cold winter months, perhaps a simple work of mercy would be enough to warm a heart.

Take a moment to write a spiritual message of hope. Whatever that may be. A poem, a personal message - whatever feels inspirational ... and sign your first name. Then, go to your closet and pull out a scarf you are willing to part with. Attach the note to the scarf and bring to Mass or school.

Once collected, a group of volunteers will take them to various locations in downtown Portland and tie them around trees for the homeless to take as they need.

Your gift will also raise people’s awareness and motivate others to reach out and do something for those in need this holiday season. There is something quite magical about seeing dozens of scarves tied to trees with people’s messages of love on them.

Please bring your scarves to Mass this weekend (December 12 or 13).  We’ll have baskets in the church lobby to collect your scarves.

St. Stephen’s Lunch Programlunchbag

Making a difference one lunch at a time

The weather outside was frightful Monday, and we received an emergency email from St. Stephen’s hoping the 5th grade could make about 200 lunches. The crew who make the chili for “Chili Tuesday” could not make it in due to rain and flooding. The fifth graders did a fantastic job accommodating this request! All in total the 5th grade made 198 lunches, 20 extra sandwiches and dozens of cookies from Helen Bernhard’s Bakery. A special thank you to Violet and her family for bringing in 32 lunches and cookies.  Thanks to you 5th Grade, “Chili Sack Lunch” benefited from your hard work!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

December 13 ~ Third Sunday of Advent ~ Luke 3:10-18

In today’s Gospel different groups of people ask John the Baptist what they should do to be ready for the coming of Jesus. Each group asked the same question:  “What must we do?” John told them that they should share with those who have less, and should be kind and fair to others.  Do you have a program in your parish or community that gives gifts to people who don’t have much? How can your family help? What other programs in your parish help the needy? How can you offer your time and talent to those organizations? What gifts has God given you that you can share with others?
