A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am sure you had a sinking heart yesterday when you heard of the horrific events that happened in Roseburg. I just kept thinking… how could this have happened again?   Truly I have no answers, but to pray for the families and the Roseburg community.

In light of this tragedy, I wanted to review our Lockdown/Lockout procedure for you, should it become necessary to secure the building. When we have a disturbance in the neighborhood, that is a safe distance from the school, we go into a Lockout. All doors are locked, blinds are drawn, and we monitor the situation through police and emergency personnel. Inside the building students remain in their classrooms, but normal school activity continues. PE classes will be in the gym and recess is inside. Normally no one is allowed to enter or leave the building, subject to police instructions.

If the danger is in the building, or immediately adjacent to our campus, we go into a Lockdown. Again, doors are locked, blinds are drawn, and no one may enter or leave the building. Students remain in their classrooms, but move to a space that is out of visual range of windows and doors and crouch down together. They remain there until Mrs. Rosebrook or I unlock the door to their classroom, following an all clear from any police who would be on site responding to the incident.

We had already planned a drill for this Thursday, so teachers will be talking to the students about the procedure and what the students will be practicing. It would be reassuring for you to have a conversation with your child, too, about this drill. Not to scare him/her, but to explain that we need to practice being safe, just as we do with our monthly fire drills.  Thank you for helping us protect your children.

Blessing of the Pets

On another topic, we were able to get Deacon Mike O’Mahoney to preside at our annual Blessing of the Animals next Monday at 3:10. Since Father Mike will be at the Priests Convocation, and we do not have a seminarian in residence, it was a bit uncertain if we would be able to honor St. Francis (and our pets) with this blessing. So be sure to read below for details on bringing your pet to school.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Susan

Looking for Kids Kreation Cards This Fall? kreations

Make a note that sales have been moved to the spring.  Please plan accordingly for special holiday gifts and cards this year.

A new online ordering system will be available in the spring with cards delivered in classrooms in time for Mother’s Day gifts.

If you are looking for your child's art for a holiday gift this year, check out the new online art gallery set up by Madeleine’s fabulous art teacher, Ida Galash. Simply go to www.artsonia.com and search for “Madeleine.”

Students who were enrolled last year have at least one piece published. Once you find your child’s artwork, you can transform it into treasures. Click on the “Gift Shop” tab to see what dozens of items will look like with their artwork on them. From phone cases to cutting boards, T shirts to journals, there are a lot of choices. As a wonderful bonus, our school receives 20% from everything you order.

Wish more of your child's art was available on Artsonia? We are still building our Artsonia Gallery and are actively seeking volunteers to photograph and upload student work. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new adventure, please email Ida Galash at igalash@themadeleine.edu. Training takes less than five minutes and much of the work could be done from home.

St. Stephen’s Lunch Program

Making a difference one lunch at a time

The 5th Grade class brought in 226 nutritious lunches this week. The sandwiches were passed out by volunteers from St. Stephen’s Church at Pioneer Square Wednesday night, which is a time and place where many of Portland’s homeless youth gather. Everyone at St. Stephen’s was overwhelmed with your generosity.  Thank you for all your hard work, 5th grade families, you’re making a big difference.

Please note a few new tips for the lunches you make:

familyFamily Faith Sharing

October 4 ~ 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 10:2-16

In order to test Jesus, the Pharisees ask him whether it is lawful for a man and woman to get a divorce. Jesus answers by asking them a question, “What did Moses command you?” They reply that Moses permitted it. Then Jesus explains how the law Moses gave was in fact necessary, but that it was not the way God had first intended things to be. He reminds them of the creation story, and that because the man and woman become ‘one flesh’ they must not separate. The townspeople are bringing their children to Jesus so he can bless them, and the disciples try to stop them. Jesus says, “Let the children come to me.” He says the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are childlike, and only those who accept the Kingdom as a child does will be able to enter it. The disciples must have been sad to hear Jesus speak about divorce. God created us to be perfect, but because of sin we go through all kinds of struggles in our lives. Out of love, God forgives us and continues to call us to himself.

How can you show God’s love to someone who is suffering because of divorce? How do you think Jesus felt to have all the children gathered around him? What does it mean for a grownup to be ‘childlike’?
