February 19, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so blessed to have wonderful “specialists” on our faculty. In addition to the rigorous education that our classroom teachers provide, our students receive instruction in art, music, technology, Spanish, PE, and have access to counseling and reading support. These “extras” are provided in part by the robust fundraising that our Parents Club oversees, and we are so grateful for their work.

Science is not technically an “extra” as it is part of the core curriculum, but I think that everyone will agree that the level of instruction our middle school students receive is quite “extraordinary” for an elementary school. We have a well-equipped lab with even more materials due to the Auction paddle raise. Our science teacher, Ann Yuhas, is providing a challenging curriculum with hands on lessons and is always looking for ways to improve her craft.

One event she oversees is our annual Science Night. With the help of our 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes, she organizes a night of science demonstrations, experiments, and activities. This event is coming up next Thursday night, February 25th at 6pm, and it has something for everyone. The “egg drop” is an especially big crowd pleaser and it has gotten to the point of needing written rules. If your child is going to participate, click here for the guidelines. Be sure to add this to your calendar.

On the horizon, our resourceful and creative art teacher, Ida Galash, is planning the annual art show and is hoping to host a multi-cultural arts day. If this is something that you would like to help her with, please give us a call. It takes many hands to make these events happen.

              Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

PS: Last call to claim your serving dishes from the bench outside the office before they become a permanent part of the faculty room collection!

Cool About Our School

Sixth grader goes above and beyond

Helena, 6th grade, and her parents decided to do more for our St. Stephens Tuesday lunch partner by volunteering downtown with them on a recent weekend. Helena made a menu sign for St. Stephens’ Saturday Breakfast and ran the cereal table. Helena’s family, along with the rest of the Saturday Breakfast crew, served 220 nutritious plates of breakfast to hungry folks who live in the downtown area.

St. Stephens was so grateful, they featured Helena at the top of their weekly email newsletter and credited Madeleine by mentioning that we “make 100s of sandwiches each week to share with our friends at HOMEpdx and S.A.F.E.S. women shelter!!”

Way to go, Helena! Be sure to ask her about her experience and how your family can sign up to help. Remember, the deadline for middle school service hours is coming up faster than you realize!

Cook’s Night Out—Ghanaian Feast and meet Thomas Awiapo of Catholic Relief Services

Bring your family to a Ghanaian food feast at The Madeleine
Wednesday., February 24, 6:00 pm • Fireside Room

familyFamily Faith Sharing

February 21 ~ First Sunday of Lent ~ Luke 4:1-13

Jesus went to the desert alone — to pray, to think and to fast. He was tempted several times by the devil, but he resisted each temptation and proclaimed that God, and God alone, is the Savior. Like Jesus, we will face temptations in our life, and also like Jesus, we must always put our faith and trust in God. Why did Jesus go to the desert alone? When do you set aside time to be alone so you can think and pray? Could you withstand so many temptations? Why or why not? What are some of the temptations you have faced? What do you think Jesus meant by the words, “One does not live on bread alone?”
