January 8, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! I hope you and your family had a blessed and restful Christmas vacation. With four grandchildren under the age of 6 running around our house, we were kept busy waiting for Santa. It was so much fun, especially with two extra snow days, but returning to routine has its benefits, too.

Today we are sending home the re-registration forms for the 2016-2017 school year. January is a courtesy re-enrollment month for currently enrolled families. You will find a re-registration form for next year in your child’s Friday folder. You can also click here to download one. There is also a copy of the form on our website on the forms page. Every returning family needs to fill out this form each year. If you have another child who will be joining us next year, please include his/her name on the form, too. The book/material fee of $200 is also due. (The fee increases to $250 after Feb. 1st.) This covers the cost of consumable workbooks and materials, technology upgrades, increased security costs, and the rental of textbooks. The class party fee is also included in this charge.

You may wonder why we need to re-enroll students in January for the coming year. Two reasons…..Our Open House is scheduled for February 1st and 2nd and we need to have an idea of how many openings we have to offer. Also, we will begin the budgeting process in February, and our enrollment directly affects our costs. Open enrollment begins in February and that means first come, first served.  If we do not have a re-registration form from your family, we will assume you do not plan on returning to The Madeleine next year.

Those families who would like to apply for financial aid for the coming year may begin that process immediately. Click here for the online tuition assistance application. Applications are due by March 15, 2016, to be eligible for Archdiocesan aid.  Applications are processed by FACTS Tuition Aid and allocations are determined by the number of people applying and the available pool of money. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

          Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Susan

pasta

Spaghetti Dinner Needs Chairpeople

Let's talk about pasta. Specifically, spaghetti. The school's Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser is scheduled for February, and we've already heard from 27 people interested in helping out. But this ambitious group of pasta-boiling, sauce-stirring, bread-buttering warriors needs some leaders. If you and a few of your friends are able to step up and chair this February FUNdraiser, please email Jonas Allen at jonas_m_allen@hotmail.com. We hope you're called to "serve."

volunteer

At-Home Volunteer Opportunity

We have an important post-auction follow-up task for anyone who did not get their auction hours or you just want to knock off a few more of your 30 hour volunteer commitment for the year.

We need a volunteer who can wash, fold, and box up all of the auction linens for re-sale. The goal is to recoup our decoration expenses for the auction by selling these items on Craig's List or to a wedding or event planner.

If this volunteer job is calling your name, please contact Lynn Robinson or Kristin Rios at auction@themadeleine.edu or 503-288-9197 for details.

penniesPennies For The Poor

February 1 - February 4

During Catholic Schools Week, Student Government is holding their annual Pennies for the Poor. During this event, classes compete to see how much money they can raise. Any silver coins (e.g. nickels, quarters) will lower the “score” of the class, while anything else (pennies, paper money, etc.) will raise the score. All money raised by all of the classes (silver or otherwise) will go to the Church of St. Andre Bessette. Have fun!

Getting back on track after the holidays

After the trips, relatives, leftovers and indulgences of the holidays become our 2015 memories, it’s time to go back to school, right?  If the prospect of going back to school is less than exciting for your student, it may be a setback and a negative beginning to 2016.

Deacon Mike O’Mahoney joins Parish & School staff as Pastoral Associate

Deacon Mike O'MahoneyA note from Deacon Mike as he embarks on this new journey, which puts him in the parish office most days, but also spending significant time in the school as well.

I am so happy to begin working full-time at The Madeleine; it’s been a calling for many years and finally, life events (and a little faith!) have allowed me to respond. More important than my own response is your generosity in supporting this position and I begin with deep humility, plenty of trepidation and a heart full of gratitude....

familyFamily Faith Sharing

January 10 ~ Baptism of the Lord ~ Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

Today’s reading tells about the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. By baptizing Jesus, John lets everyone know that the messiah is not coming, he is already here. When Jesus came up from the water he heard God’s voice say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Describe a time when you have done something that revealed Christ’s presence. Describe a time or situation when you have known that God is pleased with you.
